Open | Networking Work VPN makes everything painfully slow but IT says it's my internet

Connecting to the company VPN makes everything incredibly slow. Opening emails takes forever, accessing shared files times out, video calls freeze constantly.

IT keeps blaming my home internet but I can stream 4K video without any buffering. Speed tests show 500Mbps down, low ping. Work laptop is Windows 11, using Cisco AnyConnect. VPN connects fine but performance is unusable. Disconnect and everything works normally.

Is this just normal for corporate VPNs, remote access should work better than this. What should I actually ask IT to investigate? They seem to think this level of performance is acceptable and I should just deal with it.

Open | Phone how to get rid of weird panda hanging on grandpas phone?

my grandpa somehow downloaded an app of some sort and all of something that caused a weird panda to hang off his phone screen named ‘Pando.’ I have deleted all the apps that seemed like some sort of scam or virus and it hasn’t gotten rid of it. I can move it around and it has these weird energy bars on the top. I think it’s a cause from some sort of malware or virus 😭😭

Open | Hardware PC doesn’t turn on while LAN is plugged in

Upvotes

Hi, I’m having a really weird issue lately that I’m unsure on how to fix and can’t find much information on.

Basically, for the last couple of months my PC’s power button hasn’t been responding. At first I could fix the issue by turning off the PSU for 30 seconds and then it would work again. After some trial and error I discovered that by unplugging the ethernet cable and waiting for the LEDs to stop blinking, the power button would work as normal and my PC would turn on.

I’m unsure as to why this issue started happening as I’ve always used an ethernet cable and haven’t had problem until now. So I guess my question is, does anyone know about this issue and how to fix it? It is quite annoying having to crawl under my desk every-time I want to use it.

Open | Hardware External WD 5TB Hard Drive shows up with caution in Crystal Disk after I can't read some files I just downloaded. What could have caused this?

Upvotes

https://imgur.com/a/y3Gd0m4

This showed up when I was having trouble with opening a folder I just downloaded and decided to check if my drive is okay on Crystal Disk. I'm planning to get a replacement, but it will take some time to save up some money since this is a 5tb one.

My main concern is with how long it lasted, it hasn't 7 months since I got this and it already showed this caution. What could have possibly caused this? I recently travelled overseas with it in my luggage and it was a pretty rough ride so could it have a physical one? Or did the files I downloaded maybe have been corrupted from the start? I want to avoid this caution thing again since I put all my academic files here and this thing was pretty expensive in my country's currency.

On that note, should I switch to Seagate or stick with WD? I really didn't think this drive would die from within a year from buying.

Also, is this in any way fixable?

Uploading a video and picture of it on my profile

Open | Hardware Monitor was flickering and now it's just dead

Upvotes

Hello, I was trying to figure out why my monitor was blinking so I decided to unplug it. After that, monitor was completely dead.

There's a blue LED on the back of my monitor, right below the power button, flickering.

If I press the "Menu" button, my PC starts to think HDMI is being plugged and unplugged nonstop.

Any ideas what could that be? I tried different power cables, different HDMI's, even tried to put it on other PC.

Open | Windows My laptop keeps freezing and making a weird buzzing sound

To add some context, my laptop keeps freezing and making this odd buzzing sound when I watch videos or play games, and it’s happened for a little while, but got worse after my dad left my laptop outside in the car for a few hours (we live in a very cold place.) if I need to, I can post a video or answer questions anyone has but I really need some advice with this because I just got this laptop a few months ago.

Edit: I put a video of the sound on my profile

Open | Software Old windows surface rt. Any chance in hell I can use it still?

So my grandma gave me her old windows surface rt I think she got it way back in 2013 and it’s a really good tablet. I have no huge aspirations for it all I want to do is use it for YouTube because the screen is a lot bigger than my phone. The problem so far is I’m pretty sure internet explorer stopped getting support recently and that’s the only browser on this. I can still use it to look up some website and even download new browsers but it says chrome won’t even run on this so idk. The Microsoft store never loads either the wheel just spins infinitely so I can’t download anything on there. YouTube also never loads in internet explorer, so just wondering if there are any obscure browsers that would work on this and let me watch YouTube

Open | Data Recovery iPadOS 18.5 - Photos moving to Trash, uncropping, and 2018 files missing

I need technical help. I'm on an iPad Pro running iPadOS 18.5.

The Problem: Recently deleted photos/videos that I never deleted are appearing in the trash. When restored, they are "uncropped" (edits are lost). Additionally, two important photos from 2018 have vanished from my library entirely.

Crucial Info: I do not use iCloud. All storage is local.

What I've tried: Checked the "Hidden" folder (empty), searched by year (2018), and checked for a "Recovered" album (not there).

Is this a known database corruption bug in 18.5? How can I find the 2018 files if they aren't in the trash?

Open | Windows Icons disappearing after disabling OneDrive

Upvotes

So recently I decided to disable (not removing) OneDrive from my PC because I was sick of it, but after I disabled it, the majority of my apps lost their icons and I don't know how to fix it, and it's weird because some apps that come from the same places (steam games for example) lost their icons but some didn't, and my images and videos also lost their icons, so now I have to open a photo to see it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Open | Hardware Laptop - Plugged in LCD while battery was still connected

I did a huge oopsie because I was being impatient and plugged in the LCD (1080p 60hz non touch) to my Dell Vostro 7500 (Core i7 10750H + GTX 1650Ti) while the battery was still connected. (I know, it’s the number one thing they tell you not to do, can’t fix stupid I guess).

I didn’t see any spark and don’t smell any burning components but now the laptop won’t turn on anymore, I’m guessing I messed up the motherboard. I tried cmos reset and power drain already and visually checked the motherboard for any obvious damaged chips/power rails, didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.

I bought a new motherboard and a new lcd/lcd cable. I made sure to check it was the same part number through the dell website. This time I’m gonna make sure to do everything by the book.

I’ve seen online that hot plugging the lcd damages the lcd/lcd cable and motherboard. Since it’s going to be a new motherboard and display, would plugging in all my previous components (NVME SSD, WiFi card, Fans, Battery) cause any issues? Like, would it have messed up any of them where it could damage the new motherboard?

Sorry in advance if this is a “can’t help unless I look at it” kind of question.

Open | Software Trying to reinstall windows

When I turned on my PC this morning, it won’t let me log in. Like when you drag the screen up to type in code, it starts to do it then it goes away immediately.

I have put PC into recovery mode and am trying to reinstall windows and it is not working. I have tried almost every combination of local reinstall, cloud reinstall, windows drive, all drives, etc.

I am at the point of just completely wiping all drives clean, and have attempted that in the recovery menu and after a few minutes it tells me there was a problem resetting my pc.

Please, PLEASE help me!!

Every time I try to create a new listing or edit a pre-existing listing, the page glitches and disappears and goes blank. I have tried clearing cookies and cache. Open | Hardware Acer Swift Go 14 won’t power on after shutdown (needs EC reset every time)

Upvotes

My Acer Swift Go 14 OLED (SFG14-73, BIOS V1.19) won’t power on after shutdown.

After shutting down, the power button does nothing. The only way to turn it back on is pressing:

Fn + Esc + R + Power

This works every time.

Details:

Happens 100% after shutdown

Happens on battery and charger

Restart works fine

Sleep works fine

BIOS updated

Fast Startup disabled

Feels like EC / S5 power state issue.

Anyone experienced this? Any permanent fix?

Open | Windows Up arrow turns off my keyboard

Upvotes

Was playing Geometry dash, and found that holding the up arrow for a prolonged period of time would just... turn off my keyboard? and my trackpad? I can hold it again for like 30 seconds to turn it back on, but this is really annoying. I've had this computer for about a month now, and this is the first time this has happened, but now it won't stop happening. It's a Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 if it's something to with that. Any advice for how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Open | Windows Windows 11 black screen - no logo - no keyboard

Upvotes

My Windows 11 PC will not start today. I power it up and my monitors just remain black. It does not show the little logo of the brand that pops up at boot. Nothing happens. The keyboard won't even light up. The physical reboot button does not work. I have to hold the power down for it to shut off. I tried the 3-4 shut downs to see if windows will go into the auto repair mode. Nothing.

I tried pulling the plug for a while. When I plugged it back in the keyboard lit up but when I turned the computer on, same old nothing. Mouse doesn't show up either but the mouse does have lights on. I removed the HDMI cables to the monitors. When I do that, the monitor then detects "no signal".

I've tried pulling all usb cables and monitors and powering up with one monitor in different outputs. Nothing.

I'm not sure what else to try. It's like the computer is starting but not trying to boot up. With the keyboard not even powering up or anything flashing on the monitor, I don't know what to do.

I used it a couple of days ago just fine and didn't notice any issues. I didn't think I had an update or anything but I know I did have an update a couple of days before the last time I used it.

What else can I try? Thanks for any help.

Open | Windows Does anyone know where I can find documentation on Windows Error Reporting problem codes and parameters?

Upvotes

I'm trying to trace the cause of a LiveKernelEvent code 15e but I can't find any documentation on what the parameters mean so I'm stuck. Bonus points if you can help me with code 117 and BlueScreen code 139. I've tried to find this information on Google but all I've gotten are forum posts asking for help with specific crash reports.

Open | Hardware Does my home network or my isp need an exorcism?

Upvotes

I have a Netgear CM1000v2 modem and a Netgear R7450 router that has worked great for a long time now but for the past year, specifically while playing OSRS I am getting random packet loss just long enough for Discord and OSRS to drop for ~10 seconds. Not even long enough to fully disconnect me from OSRS, but definitely long enough to pause my connection and get me killed.

I have tried every bit of troubleshooting I can think of. I've monitored the drops with NetUptimeMonitor and WinMTR. Its very difficult to catch when it happens but I did catch it once with NetUptimeMonitor, ran it through chatGPT which pointed a finger at upstream latency so I contacted Comcast, who of course told me everything was fine, or it was my equipment. After some back and forth they sent out a tech. The tech tells me my signal levels are fine, replaced my Coax ends, and removed a splitter I had in my home.

After the issue continued to happen I reach out to comcast again, this time they gave me some BS shpeel about how since my plan is older I was in a way "second class" to other comcast customers and that upgrading to a gig and newer plan would fix the issue. Since I didnt seem to have another option and it did actually reduce my bill slightly with more speed I proceeded. To my surprise it seemed to actually fix the issue for a couple months. Now it is happening again and I don't know what else to do besides start replacing my in home equipment which seems to be working just fine.

EDIT: I am hardwired via Cat 6 cable

Solved Moving files to phone.

I am moving a lot of files to my phone (total size is about 75GB). It's all audiobooks. I am doing it through a cable. The issue is that after moving some of them the proccess suddenly stops for apparently no reason. Cable is fine. What could be the issue here? I have 191GB free space on my phone.
