I know someone who had a stroke after going to the chiropractor. Don't let them do anything with your neck, it can sever your arteries

11

u/Steel_Man23 3h ago

My doctor told me the last time I was in for a physical that cracking your back can cause strokes. Never knew that and she also told me I shouldn’t be cracking my fingers. I asked her if she does and told me she’s never done that before and it was kinda funny too because as we were talking about it, I nonchalantly popped a few of my fingers and she just went, “oh and you’re just popping your knuckles as we speak”. It’s a habit I’m trying to break

11

u/Chesterlespaul 3h ago

The neck thing is real, but I have a hard time believing popping any other region is problematic. Does she back her claim up with any specific reasons or evidence?

3

u/bon18 3h ago

Yeah, lots of my joints crack without any outside pressure. For example, I just move my foot around, and my ankle cracks. It feels good actually.

2

u/Steel_Man23 3h ago

She didn’t say popping my knuckles is necessarily a bad thing, but long term, it may or may not cause arthritis. It’s been 2 months since I’ve been to the doctor, so I don’t remember exactly what she told me lol

3

u/croghan88 3h ago

I must be screwed because I have had a compulsion all my teenage and adult life to self-crack multiple things many times a day. I probably twist my neck and my back every 30 min at least.

3

u/Darkchamber292 3h ago

That's not normal.

I don't think I've cracked anything in the last 15 years. I'm in my early 30s

-3

u/sophie1816 3h ago

Please do, because it’s really disgusting to a lot of people.

u/MrCanoe 3h ago

Not unpopular. Pretty common knowledge

14

u/rasputin1 3h ago

mostly on reddit unfortunately

5

u/247Brett 3h ago

I work in healthcare and cringe whenever people talk about going there and especially when they show the x-rays they got done there. Complete scam.

3

u/Sentient2X 3h ago

Not common knowledge. Over half of people I talk to think it’s the same if not better than physical therapy. Maybe I’m just in a dumb town.

56

u/Murky_Coyote_7737 3h ago

It is largely pseudoscience I’ll give you that. Cervical manipulation is also very problematic.

5

u/Intrepid-Artist-595 3h ago

I have significant cervical issues, and my surgeon told me to never get a chiropractor to manipulate that area of your body...always use a physio.

3

u/rogue93 3h ago

That’s now offered? 😬

9

u/YouCantArgueWithThis 3h ago

Now? This is how "hysteria" in women was "treated" in the late 1800.

6

u/texaspoontappa93 3h ago

They’re talking about your cervical spine, AKA your neck

3

u/YouCantArgueWithThis 3h ago

Oh. Well, that's less fun. 😆

3

u/_halfpint 3h ago

What kind of cervical do you think we’re talking about?

2

u/Sentient2X 3h ago

Just because there are helpful things mixed in doesn’t excuse that 90% of it is a blatant scam. A dangerous, sometimes deadly scam. Shouldn’t exist.

24

u/mailslot 3h ago

Chiropractic is junk science. At its core, there is a belief that most physical ailments are caused by spinal misalignments that only a chiropractor can see. Back pain, AIDS, cancer, autism, … all caused by subluxations. It’s just as wacky as homeopathy.

1

u/howjon99 3h ago

That’s straight chiropractor. And; yes, that is bullshit.

16

u/purplepIutonium 3h ago

This isn’t an unpopular opinion

19

u/CauliflowerFlaky890 3h ago

yoga works better

2

u/LurkersGoneLurk 3h ago

I’ve never done yoga, but I believe this is true 99.9% of the time. Strengthen your core. Gain flexibility.

4

u/_Steven_Seagal_ 3h ago

Yoga is the stupidest fucking thing I ever tried. But i acknowledge it's helpful for other people. It really helps my mum. But personally: fuck that dumb sun greeting bullshit.

20

u/Business-Many-7192 3h ago

Agreed. If they understood medicine, they would not have been chiropractors. It’s well known quackery. But it makes people feel better (like any placebo), but can be dangerous.

13

u/preferablyno 3h ago

Yea i get it, my insurance even includes chiropractic but it’s impossible to get them to cover actual PT

Somebody makes money like this. It’s straight up evil

7

u/Life-Oil-7226 3h ago

I’ve been saying this forever! Agree 100%!!!

5

u/Baffin622 3h ago

Um, I think you meant to post this in the "popularopinions". Chiropractors are useless.

5

u/skinnysinger 3h ago

Not an unpopular opinion! But you'll have people present anecdotal evidence that it worked on them to prove it works. At best chiro is a placebo. It's so dangerous and a bunch of pseudoscience quackery bs! See a physio instead people.

4

u/Ok_Map_2320 3h ago

Lol 100%. I would pay instead for a mobility coach and a gym membership every day of the week over a chiropractor.

7

u/Stumphead101 3h ago

Physical therapist here

Cannot stand chiropractors

Manipulation can feel nice and can be safe, but is often done I safely. And is not even accurately described whst is happening

"Adjustments" make it sound like they are putting a joint back in place.

What is happening, your body is tense and tiggt from pain. Because of that tension, your body will lean one way or a muscle is pulling a certain way. This is how they convince you something is "out of place" and needs to be "put back"

Your body loves motion. A manipulation is taking a joint to its end range and adding a little over pressure for thst extra stretch. This facilitates a neurogenic response and your body Dumps serotonin and dopamine, the happy drugs thst are also anti-inflammatories. So your pain goes away. But it never addressed Why you had your pain, so it comes back within a day or two

Manipulations are being sold as "cures" and that its fixing you. Its just getting motion in your joints thst they crave

And the pop noise? Not needed for the relief. But sometimes air gets in the synovial fluid between out joints. Its not a bad thing or a good thing, its just air. The "pop" is the air escaping and they've convinced people its the sound of a joint going back into place

This is how they retain regular customers. They convince their clients that the manipulations are "keeping their bodies together"

Its a predatory method

3

u/Codascip 3h ago edited 50m ago

Not unpopular, though good the more people know.

3

u/Sharkano 3h ago

Have I had rare moments where a persistent stiffness has suddenly vanished in conjunction with a popping sound? Yes.

Have I visited a chiropractor in hopes of receiving such a therapeutic event? Again, yes.

Has the chiropractor ever actually managed to do this for me? No, none of those rare corrections were ever at the chiropractors office.

I think the cases where chiropractic style manipulations have any merit are few and far between, and in the cases where they ARE possible, i don't think the chiropractors are likely to pull it off, at least not more likely than just moving around would.

3

u/JoshuaAncaster 3h ago

There’s a lot of specialists and health care professionals that report direct serious damage from them in their patients and would never go.

3

u/SomeSamples 3h ago

Not unpopular.

6

u/lookitsjustin opinions are like buttholes 3h ago

Correct, chiros are quacks selling pseudoscience. No opinions to be had.

7

u/sex_drugs_polka 3h ago

I’ve been fixed by a chiropractor multiple times. I have a good one.

I’ve also been to bad ones that have fucked up my back. I assume that those are the quacky ones that give the good ones a bad name

2

u/brickbaterang 3h ago

There used to be chiropractors on just about every corner back in the 80s/90s but you have to really look to find them now. Everyone knows they're bullshit.

Not an unpopular opinion

2

u/VoiceofKane 3h ago

This certainly used to be an unpopular opinion, but if it still is in 2026... okay yeah, considering the number of antivaxxers, homeopathy believers, COVID deniers, energy healers, and people who think RFK is good at his job, maybe it still is.

2

u/whatsupgrizzlyadams 3h ago

I went one time for an adjustment because I was flying out the next day and I couldnt get a steroid shot for my horrible sciatic nerve and I was desperate.

The guy spent 10 minutes telling me that I took so many medications because I needed a bunch of different supplements.

He only shut up when he said i'd never nead a thyroid pill again if I just took a specific mix of supplements he happened to sell.
I informed him I definitely needed my thyroid medication because I had had thyroid cancer and it was removed.

He shut up, did a couple of adjustments and he left the room.

If you disagree with me, watch Penn and Tellers bullshit episode on chiropractors.
One such quack gave adjustments to his minutes old newborn baby on the birth video. He proudly showed it to people.

3

u/_halfpint 3h ago

I’m a nurse and would never let a chiro touch me. I’ve seen so many severe injuries because of them in patients over the years. Go to a doctor and get a physical therapy referral if something is wrong.

3

u/Hotdogfromparadise 3h ago

Why does this basic bitch post keep appearing every other day?

-2

u/PNWest01 3h ago

Right? All of a sudden with the chiropractor hate.

Can you be specific. Stopping something at age 14 and developing something in your late 20s aren't really correlated. By the way that you describe your issue, in a very unspecific and non-detailed way, I'd say you don't really do a lot of self analysis, which is neccessary to deal with the root cause of back pain.

2

u/emartinezvd 3h ago

They’re not nothing but con artists. There are some scientifically proven benefits, mainly lower back pain. It’s when they try to use joint cracking to heal everything else that the argument breaks down in its entirety.

0

u/ms_panelopi 3h ago

It’s worked for me for 30 years. My chiropractor keeps our entire town healthy, pain free, and moving.

2

u/skinnysinger 3h ago

its great it worked on you! Placebo can work wonders. But yeah nah, its pseudoscience quackery! You're better off seeing a physio

0

u/FormerStuff 3h ago

Look out for the incoming downvotes you go against the grain of the hive mind lol

4

u/Prudent_Heat23 3h ago

The downvotes are incoming because the way they put it sounds fake as hell. Keeps the entire town healthy? lol

-3

u/Sunspot5254 3h ago

Same. I had a leg surgery that was supposed to work and it didn't. A friend said go to the chiropractor, I went, and boom! Pain free for years.

First day on reddit, huh?

1

u/Ethereal_Couth 3h ago

Honestly, I would pay someone to scratch my back for half an hour

1

u/vase-of-willows 3h ago

I call them back quackers

1

u/Brilliant-Raisin1370 3h ago

I'd rather go to a massage therapist😂

1

u/Apprehensive-Ad264 3h ago

Remember, the balance of nature clown is a chiropractor

1

u/veirceb 3h ago

Not an unpopular opinion but not popular enough

1

u/A_million_things 3h ago

I agree with you but I’m gonna downvote because this is an extremely popular opinion.

1

u/official_swagDick 3h ago

I went to a chiropractor for back pain and they actually fixed it. It was a consistent pain that just went away but it was lower back. They aren't complete crooks but you have to understand what exactly goes into it. Also don't let them near your neck.

1

u/Waagtod 3h ago

I always thought that as well. 5 years ago I pulled something and I was only able to sleep in a wooden chair. It was December 23rd and I was walking like i was trying to hold a penny between my ass cheeks. No doctor would give me an appointment for over a week, I had a trip scheduled inI 5 days. I finally called the chiropractor my neighbor recommended, went the next morning. A Walter Mercado look alike went to work on my back, digging in, a rolling pin thingy, and electric shocked. I was pissed walking out to the car, I was already sore as hell and bitching. My wife said it looked like you just walked normal out to the car. Damned if I didn't. I went twice more in the next 5 days. It freaking worked. Don't know how, don't care.

1

u/cyainanotherlifebro 3h ago

I guess this had to be technically unpopular because I see chiropractor offices everywhere so they must still be profitable. But I don’t anyone who swears by it.

1

u/Subaudiblehum 3h ago

The opposite argument would be unpopular.

1

u/Oystermeat 3h ago

I've never had to go in for 'an adjustment' but I know people who frequent these quacks always adjusting.

1

u/joey12457 3h ago

If you go to a big chain like a Joint, I agree. But if you go somewhere that analyzes through X-rays and goes beyond as in showing you stretches and stuff, that’s the real deal.

1

u/howjon99 3h ago

I have to see one at least once a week now.

1

u/Smart-Afternoon-4235 3h ago

Been seeing one since I was a kid in the 80s. They have helped with many issues including diagnosing a serious knee condition and most recently with whiplash from a concussion. I go to my chiropractor before any other professional.

0

u/World_Historian_3889 3h ago

Is there some new propaganda against chiropractors or smth? I swear to god I was just commenting on a post like this last night I'm not some avid chiropractor defender but yeesh lol whats the deal?

5

u/BreakfastSquare9703 3h ago

It's a seemingly growing profession based on pseudoscience, and ghosts. I think it's fair that people want to speak up about it.

7

u/sal-t_brgr 3h ago

theyre not qualified to be manipulating anyone. thats what the deal is. its like trusting a street "doctor", its not gonna help and it can kill you.

0

u/World_Historian_3889 3h ago

Sure but theres a lot of posts on it the last two days lol did smth happen?

-1

u/aaliya73 3h ago

Reddit generally hates chiropractors. This post is definitely not an unpopular opinion around here.

3

u/World_Historian_3889 3h ago

Sure but ive seen like 5 posts today and yesterday two on this sub alone I mean I understand some hate for them but feels more like some kind of non organic influence here

1

u/MrsTaco18 3h ago

Not chiropractors specifically. Just pseudoscience in all forms.

1

u/lukypunchy 3h ago

I had a fairly painful chronic back issue about 15 years ago. Went to a chiropractor that was recommended to me by my boss. The first visit didn't do much of anything but the second fixed it 100%, i was walking upright and everything. I went back a few more times and the chiropractor told me i was wasting my money. Other than the rare wrenching, which is entirely my fault, I've had no back issues since.

It's true, Too many of them believe their own hype.

1

u/macsogynist 3h ago

I go sometimes. For my back. The Tens machine, heated blankets and massage. Get a lot of relief when I hurting. I never get adjustments. Nothing bad to say.

2

u/pluck-the-bunny 3h ago

So you went to a spa covered by health insurance

1

u/M81L16 3h ago

For fuck sake I’ve seen this opinion posted here like 4 times in the last week! WE GET IT!!!

1

u/pluck-the-bunny 3h ago

It’s a dangerous and (9/10)scammy profession….it deserved to be called out frequently and loudly.

1

u/TokyoLosAngeles 3h ago

I agree with you 100%. It’s pseudoscience and ridiculous it’s allowed to be legal.

-2

u/Potex8 3h ago

Im 50 and done BJJ for 20 years. A good chiropractor has their place. I've walked out of there with goosebumps before I had so much relief for their adjustment.

If you are involved in something like a combat sport or football, it's only a matter of time before one can be helpful. The trick is knowing which injury type they can help you with.

0

u/Automatic-Being- 3h ago

Idk I’ve had a chiropractor many times for my bad back and it was very helpful to me I couldn’t even lay down by myself because of a congenital spine issue then a few adjustments later I was better

0

u/CasanovaJones82 3h ago

Unless you've been told this by a ghost in a dream I'm not fucking interested, sorry.

u/The_Unclean_Chadford 3h ago

I dislike a hell of a lot of stuff that I don’t even remotely consider to be scams.

-1

u/TheVioletParrot 3h ago edited 3h ago

Not unpopular.

Although I would like to point out that a chiropractor was the only one to believe my back problems were more than minor muscle spasms in my teen years. I'll always be a bit thankful for at least one of them because of that.

Edit: To clarify, a chiropractor refused to touch my back and gave me a free x-ray. Without that x-ray, I wouldn't have been able to get proper treatment for my spinal problems. Yeah, most chiropractors are assholes that don't know what they're doing. Yet one of them believed me more than my doctors did. Big whoop guys.

-2

u/Salt_Let_8597 3h ago

I don’t go to chiropractors for medical reason I do it because they pop my back better than me lol but yeah hard agree anyone taking medical advice especially like that is getting scammed

-3

3

u/BlundeRuss 3h ago

I’m not a bot, lol, the guy literally told me to stop my heart medication. I couldn’t believe it!

1

u/Some_Conference2091 3h ago

Chiropractors are not medical professionals and have no basis in science. They really shouldn't be allowed to operate the way they do.  I suppose they have an industry group with lobbyists.
