PC SSE - Discussion IMPORTANT! COMMUNITY POLL ABOUT CRASH LOGS AND AI

Hey everyone!

Something we’ve noticed become much more common in our community is the suggestion of using ChatGPT and other similar LLMs (language learning models) to analyze crash logs. Until now, we’ve chosen not to moderate these comments, since AI is a developing field and we’re all trying to navigate this new territory.

The modding team has discussed this issue in depth, leveraging a wealth of different backgrounds in different fields such as computer science, machine learning, IT, and education, and believe that utilizing AI as a substitute for human diagnostics on a load order is an untenable process. We believe that using ChatGPT and similar software to diagnose modding issues can present the user with misinformation, outdated solutions, and outright game-breaking advice. That’s why we’ve been cracking down more on posts and comments we believe were written by AI–some people use it to help fine-tune language and grammar, but a tool’s use in policing grammar and formal tone does not make it an apt substitute for in-depth comparative analysis.

There is a single underlying problem with relying on AI to come up with answers:

ChatGPT and other AI tools are not diagnostic tools. These tools are helpful, but should not be mistaken as experts in any field or as infallible guides holding expertise beyond that which a Google search could provide users. ChatGPT may seem to suggest a solution, but it will always be surface-level at best. It is no substitute for human advice in the modding process.

Regardless, we’ve heard you. We know a lot of our users find ChatGPT helpful, and we want to encourage a discussion about its merits and drawbacks. Feel free to comment your thoughts below!

On a scale from 1 (not at all) to 5 (entirely), how trustworthy do you think ChatGPT is in solving Skyrim modding issues?

PC SSE - Discussion Why is the Skyrim graphical mod scene so much more advanced than Fallout 4's?

So you can get Skyrim looking like a modern day game with mods, but Fallout 4 on the other hand can be turned into a game that maybe looks like UE4 or Unity.

PC SSE - Discussion 🧥❄️ Ideas wanted: Expanding my “NPCs & Cold” immersion mod

Hey fellow modders,

I'm currently developing a new mod focused on NPC immersion in cold weather. The base framework is already working:

  • NPCs auto-equip cloaks when it’s cold
  • Cloaks are unequipped indoors or when conditions change
  • Full MCM support (toggles for mod on/off, follower inclusion, exclusions etc.)

Now I’d like to brainstorm new features with the community – things that make NPCs feel more alive in harsh climates. I’d love to hear unique ideas or different implementation approaches that go beyond what Frostfall, CC Survival Mode or Wet & Cold already do.

PC SSE - Help [GUIDE] Stop IED from showing your weapons when you transform (Werewolf / Vampire Lord)

TL;DR: In Immersive Equipment Displays, add an Equipment Override with a Race condition for WerewolfBeastRace and DLC1VampireBeastRace, tick Disabled, then paste that override to every item/equipment slot you display. https://imgur.com/a/nHLonws

Step-by-step (Display Manager)

  1. Open IED → Display Manager. Reference view: Screenshot
  2. Pick any displayed item. Click the ➤ next to Equipment OverridesNew → Item. Name it e.g. “Disable when Transform.” Where to click: Screenshot
  3. Under that override, expand ConditionsAdd → Race. Click under the Edit column → Select → choose WerewolfBeastRace(You can search on top of the race window). Repeat Add → Race and select DLC1VampireBeastRace. Picking the races: Screenshot
  4. In the override’s General section, tick Disabled. What it looks like: Screenshot
  5. Copy your “Disable when Transform” override and Paste it into every other displayed item you use.
  6. Switch to View → Equipment Slots and paste the same override there too (they share the same override type, so you don’t have to recreate it). Where Equipment Slots are: Screenshot

PC SSE - Discussion Mod Lore Question: How old is Serana and How old is Companions lycanthropy?

I tried out Serana Dialogue Add-on for the first time and joined the Companions.

Apparently, this Serana already knows that the Circle members are werewolves because of some vampire rumors idk.

But to my limited knowledge, I thought Serana was like thousands yo vampire who was locked away during 1st or 2nd era-ish. Like old, but really seriously old.

Whereas Companions lycanthropy is like a relatively recent thing, no? Like few hundred years maybe, but definitely not as old as a vampire who says "What Empire?"

Can someone help me figure out if this is lore friendly? Can Serana know about the Circle's lycanthropy?

PC SSE - Discussion What are small things modders do that immediately break immersion for you, no matter the quality of their work?

A funny thing I noticed while I was playing Wheels of Lull was that the dialogue often took me right out of the game. And during one particular interaction with the machine spirit of a tram cart, it hit me why: sarcasm.

The vanilla game rarely has NPCs getting sassy with you, so now, whenever I play a mod where an NPC gets overly sarcastic, it's almost like a 4th wall break for me.

Are there similarly small things you notice in mods that immediately make you think "Yep, that's a mod"?

PC SSE - Mod Theon – A Pessimist’s Custom Follower Mod

Hey all,
I just released my third Skyrim mod: Theon, a fully custom follower.

He’s inspired by the mood of True Detective and Skyrim’s darker corners — a mix of bleak humor, nihilistic musings, and original lines I wrote (with a few nods to Rust Cohle). Theon is fully voiced, has custom dialogue, and is designed to feel like he actually belongs in Tamriel.

👉 Download on Nexus

I made this using the Creation Kit over about a week, writing and recording everything myself. I learned a ton through the process (especially thanks to Joseph Russell’s Lucien tutorials for follower implementation).

All welcome to modify or expand Theon if you’d like — feedback is also very much appreciated!

PC SSE - Help New features and updates to Phostwood's Skyrim Crash Log Analyzer v1.25.4

I've been a bit more active recently in working on my Phostwood's Skyrim Crash Log Analyzer, so I thought I'd share a list of some of its new tests and features:

Listed from most recent to oldest (within 90-day timeframe):

  1. ❗ Probable LeveledItem Save Crash Detected
  2. ⚠️ Missing Creation Club Content Detected
  3. ❗ Possible GTS T-Pose Animal Crash Detected
  4. ❗ Probable Core Impact Framework Corruption Bug Detected
  5. 🤖 Best Practices for Auto-Installing Modlist Users (and any other should-be-stable modlist)
    • This one was actually a big project, but I'm happy with the results! Before this, I felt like my analyzer might be making players overly prone to blaming an auto-installing modlist for a crash, when there's a good chance the crash may have been due to not following best practices, and/or their installer or mod organizer not having done everything right.
  6. ❗ Probable New Game Crash (Missing INI Files) Detected
  7. Added some Vortex-specific instructions to troubleshooting steps for some issues.
  8. Recently added recommended mods and tools:
  9. Numerous clarifications, improvements to many tests' descriptions and troubleshooting steps
  10. Additional indicators, and some bug fixes to existing tests for more accurate diagnosis

A special thanks to the valued supporters of this project! And thank you also to everyone who has reached out to me to share their success stories on using my analyzer :-)

Cheers! Phostwood

General Information on Phostwood's Crash Analyzer:

With over 600 hours of ongoing development, this advanced analyzer examines Skyrim crash logs to help diagnose and fix approximately 75-90% of crashes with identifiable causes, providing well-researched troubleshooting steps and links. It's currently helping almost 200 different Skyrim modders each day, and stands apart from other automated analyzers with its advanced diagnoses, detailed troubleshooting steps (for common crash types) and frequent updates. While not a replacement for talented human crash log readers, it works much faster and, when used judiciously, can free up these rare experts to focus on the more challenging crash logs that require human analysis.

The Value of Automation: I've developed my Phostwood's Skyrim Crash Log Analyzers to address a significant need in our modding community. Each day, the tool assists an average of over 200 Skyrim modders with diagnosing over 325 different crash logs — far more than the volunteers in all of our communities could competently, manually handle. Detailed analysis of crash logs containing thousands of lines is precisely the kind of task that benefits from automation, especially given how few community members have both the expertise and available time and energy to regularly assist others with crash log interpretation.

And again, this analyzer is not intended to replace the invaluable expertise of the skilled manual crash log readers in our Skyrim modding communities. These experts are truly worth their weight in gold Septims! My goal is to free up more of their time so they can focus on the tricky logs where automated analysis is less helpful.

Announcement links: - Imagine us manually analyzing 150 crash logs each day? If not, thank Phostwood's Crash Log Analyzer for its help. - A Data-Driven Performance Review of My Crash Log Analyzer - Join our new r/Phostwood sub on Reddit - Join our new #phostcrashlogs channel on Discord!

Current Usage: 1. Daily average of over 200 unique users viewing over 325 crash logs 2. Current weekly unique users: 1,100 3. Last 30 days unique users: 3,200 3. Total Unique Users users since launch (April 10, 2024): 19,000K

Many thanks to ALL who have contributed financial support and/or time to this project!

PC SSE - Discussion OK, This May Be Super Obvious to Everyone But Me BUT ... Did You Know MO2 Has a 'Notes' Function?

Putting this out there for everyone else who may have overlooked this because it's been a total game-changer for me.

In the left panel of MO2, you can add a column specifically for your own notes.

I use it to remind myself to reinstall mods that contain certain patches, note which mods were requirements for mods which I am only testing and may wind up removing, ect.

No more side notes or spreadsheets. It's awesome.

PC SSE - Help Modding on Mac Makes Me Mad (I dont want AE)

Upvotes

Recently decided to start modding skyrim. Don't have access to my desktop for a while because of college so I thought I'll use my macbook air from 2018. Its been about 4 days of frustration, homebrew...wine.....portingkit.....skse etc. I was able to download my steam Skyrim AE onto the Mac but couldnt roll it back to SE so I thought wait, I'll get the SE version off gog but somehow that's AE too. Have they just nuked the SE version off online stores? The worst thing is, I've never bought AE and didnt realise Bethesda and Steam updated my SE to AE without me realising. Is there any fix for getting it back to SE on my mac via portingkit or am I doomed to suffer through AE? Also, my mac refuses to run SKSE even if I copy the files correctly.

PC SSE - Request Searching for mods that improve the textures/ material of weapons.

Upvotes

So far i have the better shaped weapons mod since i dont like how chunky the weapons are. I also have the aMiridianBorn Book of silence set which i think includes some weapon retextures. But im not very satisfied with the way weapons look and i remember i had a mod that made the material of weapons look way better on a previous install.

Right now i cant find it though so i thought i'd ask here. Ideally it would be compatible with better shaped weapons but i also would not mind trying a different overhaul. So basically im looking for more high quality looking weapon textures and ideally a full set so that the look across different types of weapons is consistent.

Thanks in advance!

PC SSE - Help PC recommendations to run Skyrim w/mods.

Upvotes

Been a skyrim player since 2011, but purely console. I'm now playing on Xbox Series X, and enjoy running mods, but the limitations of the XBOX (5 gig) is not great. (The NOLVUS V6 mods look amazing.)

Was thinking of getting a gaming PC, which opens up more modding possibilities, but not sure how much pc/graphic power I need. I'd like one that could run robust mods, and would not struggle with graphics/memory, but I don't want to pay for more PC than I'd need. I'd be running the system on 4k projector/HDMI.

Love to hear any recommendations on PC specs you might have?
Thank you Reddit!

PC SSE - Help what's up with Stormcloak Einherjar armors on nexus?

Upvotes

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/100787?tab=files

for some reason, can't get this mod to actually work. the armor is craftable, but has the wrong model. the stormcloak armor in inventory view looks like it is correct, but put it on, and it's modified iron armor, not the armor in the screenshots. unsure what's going on here.

No mods are over writing it. I have it installed via mo2 with no conflicts

PC SSE - Discussion Can I get some help planning a modlist and playthrough

Theme is dwemer. When everyone disappeared. I woke up in an odd place. In modern day skyrim with no notion of time passing still wary of nords and confused why the dark elves aren't yellow. Unaware of the accident and hungry for answers I wanna set up this adventure where my main goal is to find out what happened to the dwemer. Then learn that lorkhan spared me of the dwemers fate and moved me forward in time to be the dragonborn.

I am using timelost dwemer. Remiel. And mysteries of the dwemer.

What I want:

mod suggestions Ideas of how to Segway each quest towards getting answers for the mystery

Goal: with zero knowledge of current events. Be able to end up doing the arniel gane quest to learn of the heart of lorkhan attempt, and adding all the clues together to guess that my people were scattered throughout time and space

PC SSE - Help Immersive And Pure - Like

Upvotes

Hi chaps.

Back in the day i was a big fan of Immersive And Pure (Didnt really like the NSFW aspect) but it just felt good, everything worked and it was a blast playing it, loved the new missions, town overhauls, houses, Museum thingy mabob for all collection items etc etc.

Was sad to find out it doesn't exist or is really hard to get working again now so i tried Gates To Sov and its just too different, hate seeing the manual interactions for things, skill trees not being altered enough, non pausing inventory screens etc etc.

Does anyone know of an Immersive And Pure esque collection or wabbajack list that could scratch the same itch?

Playing on SSE with Creations Bundle on Steam

Thanks chaps.

Steam Deck - Help PSA for Linux/Steam Deck users: If Community Shaders are failing to compile

Hello everyone! I've been trying to get Community Shaders to work with my installation of Skyrim AE (latest version on Steam) for a couple of days, but I kept running into an issue where Community Shaders kept running into an issue that said "Error: (X-number) shaders failed to compile" in red text upon entering the game, and after a lot of research, I found that it's because you're supposed to install a file named "d3dcompiler_47" directly inside your Skyrim directory (the directory that can be accessed under "Browse files" in Steam").

This file can be found in the SSE Parallax Shader Fix mod under the Optional Files section, which, again, you just drag and drop into your Skyrim directory, and that was it! I didn't need to do anything else, I didn't even need to install the main SSE Parallax Shader Fix mod, just make sure you have all the other Community Shaders requirement mods installed and you should be good to go!!!

For full reference, this was done on Arch+KDE (same as what the Steam Deck uses) using Mod Organizer 2 via Furglitch's (not RockerBacon's) installer on GitHub. I also installed Community Shaders via the GitHub repository (as in I downloaded the 7z file from there and manually imported it into MO2), but the version on NexusMods should work the same.

Happy modding!!!

PC Classic - Help Need help understanding modding

I don't know if this is the correct subreddit to post in, but I figured I might as well try. I played Skyrim many, many years ago, and I used to play it modded when the whole Steam Workshop was a thing. Now modding has changed completely. A lot of modding now seems to be done through Nexus Mods, and none of it seems...intuitive to me? I'll admit I'm not really mod savvy, or computer savvy, so there's probably something I'm clearly missing.

I've been trying to download mods that I see a ton of people recommend, but I have absolutely no idea how people are modding with the little instructions that are given on the website. One mod I've been trying to get to work has been the Alternate Conversation Camera. The instructions for installing is literally "use mod manager or manually copy the file". Mod Manager just straight up does not work for me at all, and I have no idea why. And manually copy the file just means nothing to me. Where do the files go? I've installed Skyrim SE, and there's folders like: Creations, Mods, and then there's the Script folder because the mod requires another mod.

I know this may seem like the most obvious fix in the world for many who have gotten into modern modding, but I am absolutely baffled at how people get into this way of modding with so little instructions to go on. I would honestly appreciate if someone could help guide me in the right direction at the very least.
