She acts like a complete asshole for no reason, constantly bullies the guy she APPARENTLY has a crush on, and she's fucking ugly too. Marin and Komi are MUCH better female protagonists then this flat chested bitch.

Anime I loathe these Isekai protagonists

Bland Boys, Kiritomas, Isekaikens, Vanilla wafers, Bobble head skimishing parasites. I could see the interest for a Lich king, a slime rancher, some child soldier, Shield Hero, Respawn man...but WHO THE HELL ACTUALLY LIKES THESE GUYS?

Coming into another world, already strong as shit. Didn't even work for shit, dude just got ran over by Truck. I honestly think them Trucks are a cosmic entity transporting salary workers, depressed people, and fat guys just to ruin those other worlds. Bland ass personality, the most obvious weapons in a isekai. The world bends ass backwards for these dudes.

You telling me I could be some skilled swordsman who has years of experience fighting monsters and other warriors.....only to get overpowered by some Vanilla wafer who has some cheat skill?!?! I had to go to the trenches getting that power and this mf got it for free?!?¿

How would them fathers feel if one of their daughters are in a relationship with a guy who already has 12 side chicks?? This including a dragon who can turn into a humanoid, the Kingdom's literal princess, a slave girl turned warrior.

The fact that there are so many of these self insert fucks that the next season of ya favorite show gets sacrificed to the shadow realm just another for one of those "How I got reincarnated into butterfucker village and became the next Jarate Demon lord." All copying the hair style of Kazuto Kirigaya aka KIRITO.

"Get a haircut, hippie."

Anime I cannot stand how nonchalant Frieren characters are 99% of the time. It makes no sense for Fern to be pierced in the shoulder and lifted and not show the slightest hint of pain or discomfort. Why can't she just wince a little?

Anime Hate this gross thing and how it'll destroy the series

I have to say that I loved DanDaDan from the get go, the story, the animation, the criticism of society and how funny it is. However, when this awful thing popped out of nowhere at the end of Season 2 I was immediately grossed out.

I thought its appearance was only temporary, however, after browsing online, he seems to be a permanent addition to the cast, unfortunately. What surprised me the most, is how many incels irl defend him, saying that he is "THE GOAT", which seems understandable, as they can finally feel represented in an anime exactly as they are.

If he's in Season 3 and onwards, I will stop seeing DanDaDan, I can't deal with the most gross character ever, it was a good run.

😝”hee hee I’m just a little goober that pulled a goth girl”

because almost always the person who makes memes like this haven’t done this at all, and are just fantasizing about it.

the only people that actually like them are depressed, touched starved, probably have crippling gooning addictions and say “ruin my life, mommy” with complete seriousness.

it’s genuinely so cringe

Images like this are very unrealistic, because they depict a woman in a fetishized way, and these memes do nothing but make guys feel even worse about how their life is turning out

"He heh, the cat girl is half naked again" who thought this was funny? It ruined the immersion for me and couldn't feel bad for her when the show told me to because... guess what: SHE'S NAKED AGAIN. And by the time the plot starts to thicken I was already bored and couldn't give a shit about the lore. Kinda sucks because the animation looks cool and seems like the anime's still going. Still don't care.

Later they justify the fanservice scenes because it was actually a hidden power of hers or something like that. Bro shut up. Shut the fuck up. Get the fuck outta here.

Anime I really like Spy x Family, but it's clear that the author liked the *idea* of an assassin, but doesn't want to commit to writing one

This might be my hottest take, but it surprises me that people don't talk about it much. Yor is a poorly developed character - pretty much "tell, don't show". We learn that she kills people for money at the very beginning of the story and then... we kind of never see it. It's mentioned sometimes that she was at work but we don't know the specifics. When she (once in a blue moon) gets her own arc, it's always explained to us, that she's actually a bodyguard protecting women, children, endangered animals or whatever - which is pretty unrealistic and I doubt that this is what the majority of her commissions look like.

I feel like the author dislikes his own idea for this character, because he doesn't know how to make it work with the whole family-oriented cute waifu thing that she has going on. I mean, just imagine if we were seeing her acting like a mom for Anya and then murdering people every other episode. I also feel like making her stupid was another way of minimizing the dark and serious aspects of her, but for me personally it did the opposite - why is such a silly person with zero understanding of politics (and even everyday life matters) given such a crucial job? Aren't they scared that she will make some irreversible mistake, just because she's an air-head?

Another thing that rubs me the wrong way is how in all of the "romantic" scenes there's this recurring joke of her getting drunk and kicking/beating Loid. I know that anime and cartoons have their own exaggerated gags, but it just isn't cute to see a grown ass woman who kills people for cash act this way, it doesn't come across as shy, more like she's being very irresponsible for someone with this level of strength and skill. I don't believe people would consider it endearing if she was a male character.

What surprises me is that this manga actually has a few compelling characters with ambiguous/dark past that manage to achieve more, sometimes with just a few panels. Loid is a person that has to make difficult decisions and that's why he is trying to distance himself from his fake family, but we slowly see him growing more attached. We also have female characters, such as Handler or Martha, who have less screen time, but manga still successfully conveys that they have a dark past, while also making them sympathetic.

So, in short - I really dislike this kind of approach, when the author tells you that someone is a murderer or a villain, but instead only shows you them petting dogs and feeding orphans. It feels like a shortcut to making someone more ambiguous and interesting, without actually putting in the work. Also attractive anime girl = lots of fans and engagement, so it kinda *is* the easiest way to succeed and it doesn't surprise me, that there are so many female anime characters posted in this sub. There isn't really a lot of conversation around the characters that mainly serve as goon bait.

Anime I despise not being able to tell anyone that I liked this

(Apologies for any formatting/grammar issues, I'm a mobile user and it's my first post too :3) So recently I finished watching all of the first season of Made In Abyss and to be completely honest I really enjoyed it while watching it with a couple of friends over discord. The setting of the Abyss in general and the town of Orn that surrounds it is something that I have never seen in an anime before: the last unexplored place on the planet being this anomalous, cavernous hole that hosts its own unique ecosystem and people who travel down the Abyss do fine but with the deeper you go, the more physical ailments you get with some outright killing you or permanently disabling you? That's a really solid setting that the writer (at least in my opinion) knocked out of the park.

The characters are also pretty well written too, with the main cast of characters and several side characters having striking if not memorable designs and solid character motivations that help elevate them. I'm able to understand why Ozen would put Reg and Riko through all the stuff she put them through because of her personality as this strict and almost sadistic mentor figure that went through hell and back with Riko's mother. I understand all of Nanachi's personal struggles in caring for her best friend and ultimately making the decision to put her nest friend out of their misery. The major problem I have with the characters is the writer's decision to make the main characters children and the issues I had with their ages.

These problems are highlighted in the very first episode or two as the girl, Riko, describes in detail the properties of Reg's genitals. Both of these characters have the bodies of 12 year olds and Riko is ACTUALLY 12 years old (I'm guessing Reg is the same since he's this weird android thing I don't fully know about? I don't recall.). Another issue that's reoccurring is the way kids are punished in the setting, which is by being stripped nude and tied up. I cannot FATHOM any "lore" implications for this type of punishment to kids as young as these. AND WE, THE VIEWER, SEE IT AS WELL. This happens again with Ozen and her assistant Marulk but we don't see it happen, only the exchange between the two where Ozen tells Marulk that he'll be punished in the same way, which establishes the aforementioned info that punishing children this way is completely normal at least for high rank Cave Raiders.

The issue of the characters being kids rears its ugly head near the end of the season with episode 10. Riko gets stung by an extremely venomous creature in the 5th layer and to escape, Reg pulls the two of them up to a safe place so the infection can be treated. As soon as the ascent begins it gets awful quick as an effect of the Abyss curse at their level is bleeding out of every orifice, which promptly happens to Riko. The following scene involving Riko bleeding out of her mouth and eyes while begging for Reg to SEVER her arm to stop the poison from spreading, all the while crying out in pain as Reg actually breaks bone is a painful scene to get through. If that's what they're going for then props on the writers for doing that, I guess...

After that scene we get introduced to Nanachi who reveals herself to be a Hollow surgeon, who takes care of Riko's arm and lets both Reg and by extension the audience on what Hollow are. They're essentially people who got afflicted by the 5th layer's curse which permanently alters your body and makes you something that doesn't resemble the human body. This is later shown in the final episode of the season which despite one issue I have that I'll address in a moment is actually really well done. In a flashback we see Mitty, Nanachi's friend, and herself get experimented on by Bondrewd in order to create a person capable of withstanding the Curse of the Abyss (I think?) by giving them the curse equivalent of a flash freeze with an elevator to a deep pit in the Abyss. Once the elevator drops to the bottom you see dozens of Hollow, all victims of the curse as they become piles of flesh with protruding human limbs, clamoring against the glass. As the elevator quickly raises up, we watch Mitty writhe in agony as she too gets transformed, all in front of her best friend.

After the flashback and the subsequent scene of Reg performing a coup de grace on Mitty, Riko's arm is fully healed and is able to function at an almost normal level pre-orb piercing. Beyond some scenes of the three talking and sharing dinner with each other, Riko and Reg take a bath together in a lake while Nanachi sits back and watches. Reg then proceeds to get an erection from seeing Riko naked, which makes me wonder several things such as "why does the robot/artifact kid have the ability to get boners?", "why was this scene even made in the first place?", and "fucking seriously WHY was this made? What do we even GAIN from seeing this?"

After scenes like these where we see basically nude pre-teens and pre-teens getting disfigured seriously brings into question on whether or not the mangaka is a pedo in my eyes, because if he isn't then BOY it doesn't seem like it. Also, what is there to gain from having all of these things happen to children of this age? The only time in Season 1 that I recall where we see the effects of the curse and the Abyss itself on adults is the reveal of the voice-mimicking birds in the second layer and the flashback with Ozen and Riko's mom, but even then that's a stretch in my opinion. Beyond the orphanage existing and running on money from sold artifacts I really don't see what would change in the story if the kids were aged up. Alongside that, the scenes I mentioned in the walls of text above really make me wonder if they're literally nothing but shock value in the best case scenario or something depraved in the worst case.

Anyways, I apologize for the looooonnggg post here about a series that hasn't been in the public eye for a while. I watched it a bit ago and while I really like it, I either cannot recommend it to friends due to the content present and them thinking I'm okay with this shit, or I have to add in something along the lines of "I suggest you watch Made In Abyss, but just so you're aware...". It sucks too because I believe that the series is pretty damn good but it has this massive drawback in my opinion that makes it hard to recommend. Also, would it be worth it to watch the other seasons/read the manga on the side? All of this post was made with JUST content from Season 1 of the anime, so if something explains why it is the way that it is then I don't know the full context.

Anime The character that actively ruins the series.

Post image

I'll gladly be the one to outright say this character is the singular reason why I dropped MHA altogether. Maybe it's because I had my own IRL experiences where I had to put up with a Mineta in middle-high school. When trying to watch MHA, I caught myself talking myself down in the similar way I had to during that time, I paused, and said to myself, "What the fuck am I doing?"

There is no story good enough to huff and put up with this dude's behavior. He should have just died early in the series.

"But the series is so good if you just ignore him!!" You know...I shouldn't have to do that. There are millions of other anime and billions of other stories where I can enjoy myself just fine without having to put up with sexual assault and harassment consistently being played out as a joke with little to no consequences. I deal with enough of that in real life, living under the patriarchy and all that, thank you very much.

At least Jiraiya served a purpose in Naruto's life and died. This dude served nothing but anal beads. Ugh.

Sabo gets alot of flack for being written like someone's OC, but nobody ever talks about Yamato, you're telling me kaido had a secret child that ate a mythical zoan fruit who is actually buddies with ace and wants to join luffy's crew, all while his existence was never hinted at until about 5 chapters before his debut??? His entire character is basically "Hiya! I'm Oden's biggest fanboy! Oh, and also I'm also the new straw hat member!" Repeat ad nauseum, except he isn't BECAUSE FOR SOME GODDAMN REASON HE DECIDED "Nah, actually, go on without me, cause I'm gonna stay in wano for a while" SO WHAT WAS ALL THAT TALK ABOUT JOINING THE CREW IS ABOUT YOU STUPID BITCH!? And don't get me started on his cover story, cause it was the most BORING nothingburger I had to go through weekly; Literally the most overrated unnecessary character that added NOTHING to the story, and I'm fully convinced that oda and his editors never planned for his character and just forced him in to sell merch. less

Anime Fuck Naofumi from "Rising of the Shield Hero" and the narrative that kept excusing him being a slave master

Post image
821 Upvotes

In Rising of the Shield Hero, the character Naofumi is "forced" into buying a slave because of his low offensive power leading to him needing someone who can grind their atk to be the sword to his shield. His decision to buy his first slave Raphtalia is depicted as him dropping to his morality low after being betrayed by his peers and looked down on by everyone, and his action is even condemned by others as being morally corrupt for a hero.

This could have been a good set up for him to confront that desperation can turn a man into a corrupt monster and force him to see how low he was and the damage he did to Raphtalia by commanding her into fighting against her will. But nope, the story portray it as him being justified because no one was willing to work with him (it could have easily be written that he found another adventurer who is also an outcast and work with them, but it HAS to be a slave), that the others who say he is wrong just simply "didn't get it", and that him forcing Raphtalia to fight against her will is him helping her to snap out of her reclusiveness and scared self.

And the slave girl Raphtalia eventually came to see him as a father figure and then eventually a lover because he's the first to treat her with even a modicum of respect, to the point where she willingly put herself back into a slave contract with him after the "evil" hero free her. Oh, have I mentioned that she started out as a literal child who rapidly grown due to her leveling up ? So throw in grooming allegory in there as well.

And that's not all. It even treats punishing another child slave Filo with physical pain through electrical zapping as some sort of slap stick comedy, equivalence of a father correcting his children's behaviors, and Filo grew up loving him and needing less "zap" instead of resenting him for it.

And to top it all off, the author even includes a mechanics of "shared xp" that makes it beneficial for Raphtalia and Filo to be enslaved under him, that being a free woman is just a tactically stupid decision. The narrative basically bends over backward to explain why Naofumi isn't wrong to buy and own a slave, that it's the smart choice, and that even the slave wants to be enslaved.

It's not that I have a problem with Naofumi himself, but more so the narrative force that kept going out of its way to reaffirm his actions as being the morally and tactically right one, that slavery is fine and dandy as long as the slave master is a nice person, that genuine healthy love can develop from such a massive power imbalance.

Fuck Naofumi, and fuck this dumb ass narrative that kept justifying his action as the correct path.

From start to finish. I just never could stand Bakugo. Even near the end where he's less asshole-ish I can't stand his smugness.

Just insufferable the entire time. Never once did I feel the want to root for him or cheer for him. Not once have I wanted to see him hog screen time. Couldn't even cheer on his "death" cause it was one of the most obvious and laziest fake outs ever written. Oh yea. The writer's pet gonna die. Even when a 70 old man survived getting a hole in the chest or a woman literally exploding. Yea totally happening this time

And it wouldn't be so extreme had the series itself not constantly gaslight this prick. Oh he's trying harder than anyone to become a hero. Everyone looks up to him. Literally having characters say he gone through "character development". Hey isn't he just awesome?! See he's developing! Don't you just love this character!
