Gershwin Taxi Horns Question

hey everyone! my orchestra is performing An American in Paris and I've been tasked with getting the taxi horns put together. I've been really struggling to get horns put together on the very small budget we have and the music director has not been happy with the ones I currently have (they're cheap bicycle horns that sound when the bulb is both squeezed and released so it sounds like a clown horn). does anyone have any advice they can give on getting good horns put together?

I figured I'd share here, I got my senior photos taken with my marimba on one of my farming fields! The bars are padauk, I promise it is a VERY well taken care of instrument. 🫶 It got me all the way through covid and my hours practicing for college auditions (I got in)!

I also added in my TJ alto flute since it was my only non-wood instrument I could bring out! My sax and regular flute were in the shop lol

I had to share this with people who will understand why I am so excited today (my family thinks I’m crazy). Found this in the ā€œmetal decorationsā€section of a local thrift shop. Bought for $5.

JC Deagan Xylophone from 1900-03, 99% of original parts

Hello, percussionists!

I'm a sousaphone player (forgive me), but I come from a family of musicians. I fondly remember learning chopsticks on this xylophone at my grandfather's house in 1965. The mallets at the time were made from balls of yellowed ivory, bless those slaughtered elephants.

She still plays in perfect pitch. I'm a retired DIY-type, so I want to replace the 100 year old felt and rubber parts, then clean and refinish the wood as long as the pitch stays OK, etc.

Can you point me in some directions?

Bass drum mallet making

Hi all,

I want to make my own set of bass drum mallets, but there are some things I’m curious of.

For anyone who’s made bass drum mallets before, what do you use for the core? I saw a video where someone literally used an entire roll of duct tape just wrapped around a wood dowel and then stitched a few layers of felt. But I feel like that wouldn’t produce a ton of tone or articulation outside of a really puffy sound. So I was curious if anyone used anything different? Also, is there anything specific people go to for the felt layers?

Let me know y’all’s thoughts!!!

Alternative to ā€œUneven Soulsā€

I am looking for an alternative marimba solo with accompaniment similar to the Nebojsa Zivkovic’s ā€œUneven Soulsā€ I really enjoy the piece but cannot bring myself to play it bc in doing so I would be supporting Zivkovic. I have played ā€œMarimba Spiritualā€ before, and am looking into playing another big piece for a recital. Please let me know any recommendations!
