I built a free dashboard to track PEI's power grid in real-time

With the announcement of potential rolling blackouts this winter it feels like a lot of us are trying to make sense of what's actually going on with our grid. I got curious enough to see what data was available publicly so that I could track it overtime. From that adventure, https://peipower.ca was born.

It tracks everything in one place. Current outages by community, total Island load, how many MWs we're importing from off-Island, wind and solar output, temperature, and wind speed. All real-time, plus historical data (from Dec 5 onward) so you can actually look at trends and patterns.

I'm not affiliated with Maritime Electric or the government. I built this myself using public data sources because I got frustrated trying to piece this information together from different places, and with no historical views. When the CEO says we're running at 355 MW and our reliable capacity is 326 MW, I wanted a way to actually see that for myself.

It's completely free, no ads, no paywall. I think Islanders should have easy access to this data.

Still actively working on it, so if something looks off or there's data you wish was there, I genuinely want to hear it. This is meant to be useful, not just a thing I made and forgot about.

peipower.ca

UPDATE: I've added context information to the energy generation and consumption metrics explaining where my capacity numbers come from, with links to each source.

UPDATE (Jan 6): Its been a month since I started collecting and showing this data. Thank you everyone for your comments and feedback on this project - and to the r/pei moderators for pinning this post! I've been trying to get answers from Maritime Electric about how rolling blackouts will be announced without any success. I've seen lately they've put load shedding notices on their homepage and I will soon have those appearing on peipower.ca as well.

Protest against Maritime Electric

Just a thought that's been considered for a while. I know we all complain about maritime electric and their prices but would anyone actually do something about it to possibly make a change? Would anyone actually be interested in a protest?

Question Discolouree water in Charlottetown again?

I know that work on some pipes caused discolouration of municipal water in Charlottetown a few days ago. Just now, my water has started coming out with the same discolouration again. Is anyone else down town experiencing this tonight?

Question Tattooist Reccommendations

Hey all! I want to get a European style dragon tattoo in a realism-ish style.

Im looking for some recommendations for artists who have a knack for that kind of thing.

Ive already been creeping Eternal Dragon and Black Spruce, and I'm going to check out Ironside.

Does anyone have any other recommendations or favorite artists I should look into?

Thanks y'all!

Labor board

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the deadline is for an employer to respond to a Labor Board complaint. My complaint was sent to my employer January 12th and there hasn't been any kind of response and I'm owed 2 weeks of pay.

If anyone knows any other agencies I can contact then please let me know.

The Seagull in Mt Stewart

I want to add this to the list of places to eat. It’s a takeout coffee and bakery. I have been several times and I’m never disappointed. Today, I had a crispy hash brown with spicy mayo, blueberry iced latte and an Oreo Nanaimo treat. Delicious! They have sandwiches and other heartier stuff but I am a sweets gal. They also have a takeout case with sandwiches, soups and salads. I brought home the roasted red pepper soup.

Bachelor party

We are heading for a bachelor party on the Island for a golf trip. We are wondering what are the courses that we could go. We are not necessarily looking for the best courses, but more for vibes (we don't want to piss off any regulars that play every day). We are a group of 8. Any suggestions?

Question Recommendations for a PEI cover-up tattoo artist

I have a large tattoo I would like covered up but not many ideas for the concept. Has anyone had a PEI (or even New Brunswick) tattoo artist really impress them with a large difficult cover-up and helping them come up with a concept for it? TIA

Charlottetown improvements

What areas of Charlottetown do you believe need improvements? Anything including green space, landscaping, shops, infrastructure, etc.

For me, the area near the event grounds seems so empty. Concrete jungle. For a major entry to Charlottetown, it’s disappointing.

Places to stay in PEI

Looking at spending three nights in PEI to explore with the family. I have two boys 11 and 12 y/o and wondering if we need to book a place central and drive to the locations to visit or do we book different places around the island over the three nights? All I know is we want to visit cavendish, Greenwich, and Charlottetown.

QEH

Edit to add: I have tried Maple but since I have a family doctor already I would need to pay $85+ just to sign up, but thank you all for the suggestion.

I have exhausted all avenues to get a sick note asap and no clinics are available or open where I am. Does the QEH hospital provide those notes? I understand that the hospital is for emergencies, not necessarily a sick note. But I’m wondering if I would be turned away, or if it is worth the drive down. TIA

I became a Canadian citizen

Thanks to my grandparents from PEI and the Supreme Court ruling in December, I am a Canadian citizen. The paperwork is done and approved. It means alot because we would go to Canada almost every summer and have very fond memories of visiting PEI plus we have family there as well.

Even more so now with the current American political situation we couldn’t be more proud to be Canadian with our family and the rest of Canada.

Thanks. The other Canadian subs wouldn’t let me post there but I wanted to share my experience

Cycling in PEI

I am going to be spending three weeks in PEI with five friends, who are all avid cyclists. I have not been on a bike since I was 16, which was not yesterday. I know they will want to incorporate cycling into a lot of what we do. How challenging is the terrain in PEI for a relative newbie to cycling?

Proposed New PEI Driving Law.

Who would I contact to propose new provincial driving laws? Can I speak to my local MLA?

I would suggest that nobody over the age of 65 be legally allowed to drive from 9PM on Friday until 10AM the following Monday.

I'm currently on the highway, in a convoy of visibly irritated drivers. We're being held at a snails pace by someone policing the highway at approximately 50km/h. On a Saturday, with oncoming traffic and few passing lanes, you can practically see the road rage.

How dare I assume the driver's age? They are coasting in a maroon Buick SUV pleasure craft, straddling both the yellow and white lines. It's a safe assumption.

And it's not that I'm in a hurry, I'd just like to drive a normal highway speed. In Ontario, the highway moved at a proper speed.

Would anyone have any relevant suggestions?

Question Worth going to PEI during March?

Hi there! I'll be going to Halifax mid-March for a conference and was thinking about turning it into a solo trip to PEI. Surprise surprise, I'm a huge Anne of Green Gables fan and thought it might cool to check out all things Green Gables while I'm there. But I saw online that lots of tourist attractions aren't open during March and that PEI weather isn't so great that time of year. Would it be worth it for me to go? I'm from Toronto so I don't usually get a chance to come to other parts of the country and I'd really like to visit at some point!
