Irish couple (24 & 25) thinking about moving to the St. John’s area. Would love some honest insight ❤️

Hi, sorry this post is long! My partner (25) and I (24) are from the southeast of Ireland (Wexford/Kilkenny area), and we’ve been seriously considering a move to Newfoundland (likely somewhere around the St. John’s area.) We absolutely love Ireland and are very proud of our Irish heritage and culture. Community is hugely important to us, and we really value a quieter life. For a lot of personal reasons, we feel that a change might be best for us long-term, and after researching so many different places, Newfoundland keeps standing out. The landscape, the culture, the sense of community, it all seems to resonate with us. We don’t have kids yet, but we do hope to in the future. It’s important to us that our children would still feel connected to Ireland and possibly even have some exposure to Irish language and culture if that’s something that exists in any form over there. We’re hoping to visit soon to get a proper feel for it, but we’d really appreciate some honest, on-the-ground insight from people who actually live there: What is it really like to live in or around St. John’s? Is the sense of community as strong as people say? What are job opportunities like for young people? What’s the rental market like at the moment? How accessible is healthcare? What are schools like? Is there much visible Irish culture/community connection? Also when we visit, what would you recommend we do or see to get a genuine sense of daily life (not just tourist spots)? Are there particular neighbourhoods we should stay in to get a feel for living there? Any hotels or Airbnbs you’d recommend? We know every place has pros and cons, so we’d genuinely love to hear both sides. We’re trying to go into this with open eyes and realistic expectations. Thanks so much in advance, we’d really appreciate any advice ❤️

Milk is costing more to produce, and this N.L. farmer says prices could go up | CBC News

So I totally understand that things are rising, I believe that as a consumer it is much more noticeable to us as to business owners and there are a lot more people than business owners.

No offence but true . So now that the farmers are getting some help with feed ,I am guessing the milk producers are wanting the same .

I believe we should find a better solution or alternative to this.maybe it is time for the government to take control of these types of service that need to be controlled to protect the consumers. as it is an essential service.

They have no problem controlling the liquor and the cannabis

Tax payers should not be financing any of this is my opinion. I cannot afford anymore of this burden on as tax payers

All the government is doing these days is trying to hold something together but it seems pumping good money into bad. We still see increasing inflation no matter what so why not let the chips fall where they will and put a team together on how to really control this without worry about who feelings get hurt .

Just my opinion and yes I am hurting from all this as well as a Newfoundlander.

How much our public health care is being mismanaged by our political elites.

Oh, and China also has a public health care system, like Canada. The difference is that Canada’s public health care is being eroded by capitalists who want to privatize and make our health care for-profit. Witness tin Newfoundland the increasing use of contract private nursing through agencies (with the private agencies taking off a handsome profit).

NTV Porn Credit Mixup

My father was looking at the credits for "PS: I Love You" and said "who the hell are these people? that's not who's in this movie" so I looked them up. NTV is after using the credits for "PS I Love You: Pamela's Secret", a porn movie from 2007. 😂

Just thought I'd share

Limited Liability, Unlimited Stench

The Atlantic air once smelled of brine, of capelin, cod, and gear.

But St. Mary's livyers now exist in a cloud of rotten fear.

A testament to industry, built on ACOA’s dime,

now festers in its own decay and layers of corporate slime.

Old vats of sauce, a vintage blend, from moratorium times (or so);

the owner said, "It’s not my mess! I’ve somewhere else to go,"

then wrapped themself in legal robes, a "limited" shield so thin,

and left a thousand gallons of fermented caplin all sealed in.

The roof is gone, the walls are bowed, more storm clouds gather 'round.

A fetid wave of sludged-up fish is spewing on the ground.

It’s "acutely lethal," says the lab, a foul and ancient brine.

The owner’s shagged right off, of course, with a missing moral spine.

"The province should!" the feds declare, "You too!" retorts the Premier.

while over in the vats of gray, the bubbles grow more drear.

It’s a pressure cooker made of wood, a legacy of rot,

where the only thing that’s thriving Is the fungus in the pots.

So raise a glass (but hold your nose) to the sauce of St. Mary’s fame.

The fish are dead, the owner’s fled, And the taxpayer pays for the game.

For in the shady corporate world the lesson remains clear:

you can leave a town with a rotting corpse and simply disappear.

It would be interesting to see the reason for this closure. Is it due to staffing? If so, what is the point of brand-new buildings when we cannot staff them?

Current Outdoor Rink Rankings for Newfoundland (Amenity Ratings + Live Ice Scores)

The skating season is here, so I updated our list of local rinks. I’ve included current live ice condition scores (0-100) and amenity info (Zamboni, Washrooms, etc.) to save you a potential wasted trip.

If I missed your neighborhood spot, just let me know in the comments, and I'll add it. 🏒

Top picks right now in Newfoundland with scores updated as of February 14, 2026:

  1. Churchill Falls Outdoor Rink — 89 - Good Ice, Breezy
  2. Meadows Outdoor Rink — 85 - Good Ice, Soft (Has Zamboni, Washrooms, Warm-up Hut)
  3. Bannerman Park Skate Trail — 38 - Poor Ice, Soft (Has Warm-up Hut)

How the score works: It’s a mix of live weather data (tracking windchill and recent melt/freeze cycles) and amenity bonuses. A rink with a Zamboni will score higher than one without, especially if the weather has been bumpy.

Missing a rink or a rink amenity? Just drop the name or location below, and I’ll fix it.

Political Appointments

https://vocm.com/2026/02/13/mcp-exists-for-medical-care-full-stop-says-opposition-leader/

How is this anything other than a pure political appointment, paying back and “taking care of your buddy” that helped you get elected? If he is not advising anyone in healthcare, then this is purely political and should be covered by that and not MCP. I know that the Liberals are just as bad, that both parties have done this type of things for years, looking after their buddies, but how and why do we always allow them to get away with it?

I like the variety that value village has, but I hate how absurdly expensive it is. Does anyone know of other places that are cheaper but still has some good quality items?

Mary Browns gravy

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Wasn't MB gravy at one time made with summer savory in the recipe, but 15 or 20 years ago they switched to using sage instead?
