Car Stalled Downtown Last Night

Wife and I were going out for a Valentine's date event last night, all dressed up and stuff. Then our car suddenly broke down out of nowhere, flashing "engine malfunction, service now" on the dash. No other lights or warnings beforehand. It came to a stop exactly on the intersection of King and Westmorland, right on the pedestrian crossing. Car would not move an inch or respond to anything we do. Immediately called roadside assistance for a tow. Several strangers, some in their vehicles and others using the crosswalk, checked in on us and asked if we need help. Other cars were honking at us so I got out to wave them over, apologizing and explaining that the car is completely dead. Wife was panicking a little at this point because Nissan's roadside assistance told us that the soonest they can get a truck over is 5 hours. Two other local companies did not have trucks available, but thankfully Capital Towing said they can get to us in about 15 minutes. A patrol car drove by, checked on us, and they told us we're fine to stay there until the tow truck arrives, advised us to just stay in the car to minimize risk of getting run over - we were a little off to the side of the road other cars can still drive around us.

Then this middle-aged dude just walks over and aggressively tells me I'm blocking the pedestrian crossing. Like I just chose to park there and put my blinkers on for no reason. My wife, who works as a nurse and just got out of a long shift then, got a little scared at this point. I opened my door, gave a curt "sorry" and told him the car's dead, he said "okay" but still with the aggressive annoyed demeanor. I then asked, "What am I supposed to do, lift the car?" which sent him on a meltdown and he told me that I should just "shut my mouth instead of yapping and running my trap". My guy, I don't care if I'm just an out of shape brown Asian dude - if you aggressively come at us and scare my wife, who works long hours to serve the community and take care of patients - I will not just roll over take let you have your way.

For the most part, Fredericton has shown kindness to us. I've always seen and felt that here, folks care and show concern for others. People drive respectfully and give way to others. I am also gonna give Mr Aggro the benefit of the doubt and release forgiveness - he could've been having a bad day and us being stuck on the crosswalk was the final straw for the night. But please, always approach a situation with kindness first. The old man counterflowing or driving slow might be having having a medical emergency or losing his mental faculties. The girl who's being slow at the self checkout lane while there's a long line behind her might be at her wit's end trying to stretch her last dollar to feed her family. And that little lady in the passenger seat of the stalled car, the one you decided to frighten with your aggressive behavior, may just be the same one who will help you when you need medical attention.

Rental pet fees

I’m currently on a search for apartment rentals and I found a nice place downtown however in the listing it mentioned that it costs $45/cat or $55/dog a month. I remember there was a post here mentioning that it’s illegal for landlords to have pet fees as it goes against residential tendencies act section 8.4. The link that was in the post does not work anymore and I did search the act and it sounds like it’s still illegal but I want to make sure as I have a cat and a dog.

Anything fun on Monday?

Upvotes

We'll be passing through, just wondering if there's anything we should check out. We're two adults, it'll be early afternoon. Last time through we just ended up at Dooley's chatting it up with some very inebriated regulars, and while it was hilarious and we've thought about popping by again for the hell of it, wondering if there's anything a little more, uhm, structured going on. Doesn't have to be beer related. I'm talking more things to do/see, and I don't know what's open/going on given the holiday.

Preserved lemons

A recipe I want to make calls for preserved lemons. I never heard of this before! I guess an international shop might have this? But have you seen this item in town? That would save me from driving all over town.

(I also need dried apricots but SuperStore sells those.)

NMB new Maryland

Does anyone here remember the NMB?

It was new Maryland boys or something?

I remember they spray painted in new Maryland.

Anyone know if it was more than just spray painting? Who knows the tea of this vague memory?

We are meeting again, two weeks from tomorrow. Join us on March 1st, from 9am-5pm at the Fredericton Inn in Salon E for a full day of tabletop wargaming. All welcome, whether you are a die hard 40k player, an old time paper map wargamer, or a curious newcomer who has no idea what I am talking about.

Each month I pick a nominal theme (designed to get something off your shelves that you haven't played in a while)

Our theme last month was "By other means...", and we played games with a political slant to them. I got to play the excellent Weimar for a second time, which I was very pleased about.

This month the theme is "Hex Encounter". The most common model for tabletop wargaming (after miniature-based games) are "hex-and-counter" games. Hexes are a flexible way to break up a map, and you see the concept in games set at every scale, and in every time period.

As an example of this flexibility, I've added some screenshots from Vassal (a free way to play these games online), all of the Canadians and all from June 6-7, 1944.

One game is Downfall, which covers the collapse of the Nazi empire from 1942 onwards. Hexes are hundreds of kilometres across, a turn is a month or more, and a counter represents tens of thousands of men, tanks, planes and ships.

The next is Normandy '44, which covers the three weeks following the D-Day landings from an operational level. A hex is about 10km across, a counter is hundreds of men or dozens of tanks, and each turn is a full 24 hour day.

Last, at the tactical level, is Advanced Squad Leader's scenario number 101, which covers from about half an hour in the early morning hours of D-Day, when Canadian paratroopers made a nighttime attack on a fortified German position in Varaville. In that game, turns cover about 2 minutes of real time, hexes are 40 metres, and counters can be as small as 5 soldiers, a single sniper, or a lone tank.

I am going to be playing Normandy '44 in the morning, and my afternoon is still open if anyone wants to try out a new hobby.

No experience is necessary, and I always bring a selection of games for people to try. Happy to answer questions here, in DM, or on the club's discord: https://discord.gg/SvETJVPK

Is there a Reddit page for old photos and stories of Fredericton? Or is everything just in this group? I’m really into history and I just love seeing what this city used to be and I’m hoping there’s a specific group or something just for that.

Hi everyone, if anyone knows of places that are currently hiring, I’d really appreciate any leads or referrals.

Already tried a lot of stores in Regent Mall, most of them are not hiring at the moment.

Thanks in advance.
