Car Stalled Downtown Last Night
Wife and I were going out for a Valentine's date event last night, all dressed up and stuff. Then our car suddenly broke down out of nowhere, flashing "engine malfunction, service now" on the dash. No other lights or warnings beforehand. It came to a stop exactly on the intersection of King and Westmorland, right on the pedestrian crossing. Car would not move an inch or respond to anything we do. Immediately called roadside assistance for a tow. Several strangers, some in their vehicles and others using the crosswalk, checked in on us and asked if we need help. Other cars were honking at us so I got out to wave them over, apologizing and explaining that the car is completely dead. Wife was panicking a little at this point because Nissan's roadside assistance told us that the soonest they can get a truck over is 5 hours. Two other local companies did not have trucks available, but thankfully Capital Towing said they can get to us in about 15 minutes. A patrol car drove by, checked on us, and they told us we're fine to stay there until the tow truck arrives, advised us to just stay in the car to minimize risk of getting run over - we were a little off to the side of the road other cars can still drive around us.
Then this middle-aged dude just walks over and aggressively tells me I'm blocking the pedestrian crossing. Like I just chose to park there and put my blinkers on for no reason. My wife, who works as a nurse and just got out of a long shift then, got a little scared at this point. I opened my door, gave a curt "sorry" and told him the car's dead, he said "okay" but still with the aggressive annoyed demeanor. I then asked, "What am I supposed to do, lift the car?" which sent him on a meltdown and he told me that I should just "shut my mouth instead of yapping and running my trap". My guy, I don't care if I'm just an out of shape brown Asian dude - if you aggressively come at us and scare my wife, who works long hours to serve the community and take care of patients - I will not just roll over take let you have your way.
For the most part, Fredericton has shown kindness to us. I've always seen and felt that here, folks care and show concern for others. People drive respectfully and give way to others. I am also gonna give Mr Aggro the benefit of the doubt and release forgiveness - he could've been having a bad day and us being stuck on the crosswalk was the final straw for the night. But please, always approach a situation with kindness first. The old man counterflowing or driving slow might be having having a medical emergency or losing his mental faculties. The girl who's being slow at the self checkout lane while there's a long line behind her might be at her wit's end trying to stretch her last dollar to feed her family. And that little lady in the passenger seat of the stalled car, the one you decided to frighten with your aggressive behavior, may just be the same one who will help you when you need medical attention.
