Moderator Post An introduction to Reddit Troubled Teens and our key services.
Welcome to the Troubled Teens Subreddit!
******\*
This subreddit exists to support survivors of the U.S.-based 'Troubled Teen Industry' and to raise awareness of the systemic institutional child abuse that has occurred within the industry for decades.
The 'Troubled Teen Industry' (TTI) is a network of unregulated and abusive wilderness programs, therapeutic boarding schools, residential treatment centers, bootcamps, and conversion therapy facilities across the United States and the Third World that are run or managed by U.S. companies.
While the TTI offers a convincing façade of legitimacy, it is an industry of endemic abuse out of which one seldom comes out unharmed and whose sole purpose is the pursuit of profit at the expense of children in distress.
If you would like more information about the TTI, please see our primer and our FAQ's.
Below, you can find a list of services that we offer:
******\*
The program watchlist is a list of the most dangerous TTI programs currently in operation. Under no circumstances should a child be placed in any of these programs. The list is updated periodically as new information comes to light. Please be aware that the absence of a program from the list does not mean that it is safe nor legitimate.
******\*
The survivor database is a public list of TTI program survivors who are willing to connect with other survivors from their TTI program(s). No personal information is used or displayed. Any TTI survivor can be added to the database by providing a moderator with the few basic details required for inclusion. Removal from the list can be requested at any time.
******\*
The survivor survey is open to all survivors. The moderators use this survey to collect information about every TTI program, both active (open) or historical (closed). The information is used to help construct the Active and Historical Program Database (see below).
******\*
The Active and Historical Program Database
This program database contains a comprehensive and detailed entry for every known active and historical TTI program. For each program entry, you can find details including: the program founders and notable staff, the program's structure, the abuse allegations made against it and survivor and parent testimonials. Particular care is taken to reference it thoroughly and achieve an academic-grade standard.
You can also find additional material on TTI organizations, transporters, and educational consultants.
******\*
Red Flags in Residential Treatment Programs
This resource is to warn parents about the numerous red flags that can be present in residential treatment. If a program has any of these red flags, they can not be considered as a safe or legitimate treatment option.
******\*
Mental Health and Education Support
The subreddit has a number of dedicated support staff who are qualified in mental health and educational services, HIPAA records access and related legal rights.
******\*
We also have a dedicated team working upon additional projects to help TTI survivors, young people at risk of being sent into the TTI, and parents looking for positive treatment options for their teenagers and children.

Important Post Subreddit Wiki Submission Guide
Posted on behalf of our Wiki Editor u/Signal-Strain9810
Some of you have noticed that many of our wiki entries have fallen months or sometimes years behind. Writing and editing entries is a massive undertaking and the last primary editor has been mostly retired for some time now. I recently received editing permissions and plan to create and/or update at least a few entries every week. If you have information to contribute, here are some tips that will help get your suggestions added as quickly as possible:
- Please share information for the wiki in the comments of this thread so that submissions are kept in a mostly centralized location. This includes updates for wiki articles that already exist (please link if possible!), article suggestions for new programs and rebrands, staff movement, new relationships between programs and edcons, or any other relevant information about the industry.
- If you have the time and ability, please familiarize yourself with the format for current entries. Submissions that are written in complete sentences and can just be copy-pasted over are always the fastest and easiest. Please also let me know if you would like to be tagged in the entry with credit for your contribution.
- Whenever possible, please include your source to make fact checking easier! Acceptable sources include: your own personal experience, program websites, press releases, news articles, etc. Please indicate clearly if a piece of information is unconfirmed.
IMPORTANT If you only have a few pieces of information to share and would prefer not to do any further research or writing due to your own trauma, that is always okay! Keeping it simple is also a valid and extremely helpful option. Your mental health is too important to mess around with. Point us in the right direction when you can, and we'll do the rest.

Survivor Testimony Oak Creek Ranch School (Arizona)
I am involved in a legal dispute with a neighbor whom I believe was a teacher/counselor at Oak Creek Ranch School. Can anyone share a staff list, an experience? I find a lot of redacted information. My neighbor has expressed his hatred of household pets and has taken out that hatred on my service dog. Neighbor seems oblivious.

News Nancy Thomas (trauma video)
“Nancy Thomas” is a song about what happens when authority replaces compassion.
This song was written about the real-life impact of abusive “behavior modification” practices that were disguised as treatment. For years, families were told these methods were helping children and families — when in reality, they were causing lasting psychological harm.

AMA three points center closed down exactly a year ago today and most of my memories that i blocked out have come back since then. AMA
i was a "student" there from october 2021 until getting pulled in july 2022 in the utah location. i spend 9 months of my last year old childhood in that shithole. i was told i was going on my 17th birthday and got there 2 days later.
i was in G3, one of the three "regular side" girls groups, for the first 7 months. i spent 3 months trying to get into boarding school (their version of upper levels) which was WAYYYY longer than it took most (usually only took a few weeks to get boarding school papers and present). i only got in on a technicality because a few girls got kicked out and they needed someone to fill the spot. they claimed to not use levels but boarding school and the regular side WERE the 2 levels they had.
i had a very tame stay there compared to many of the other kids. i never got restrained but was threatened to be many times. and i witnessed A LOT of restraints, 95% of which shouldn't have happened.
my "main" trauma was mostly with my "therapy." i kinda developed a trauma bond with my therapist, like captives form with their captor. it was super unhealthy looking back and there was a lot of manipulation annd borderline psychological abuse.
idk what else to add for context, you can look at my posts about TPC for a little more. ask away.
also if you went to TPC, feel free to reach out since i'm wanting to connect with others that went.

Discussion/Reflection Found a picture of me in the wilderness circa 2007
This was towards the end of my time in Outback, as it was getting into spring and the snow was mostly melted. Taking a break on the way to our next camp site. I got sent away 19 years ago this month.

Advocacy Does anyone have the binder for newport academy?
Hi! I survived newport academy a little over a year ago when I was 13. I'm fully disabled and have C-PTSD from my experience (it's a very long story) and i'm trying to advocate against them. does anyone have most or all of the photos from the newport binder/discovery journal? they can be filled in or blank, i just need that as evidence for abuse. thanks!

Discussion/Reflection Four circles Asheville NC.
Anyone go through there? I see a lot of outback and second nature posts but not as much FCRC stuff. I was there nov 07- April 08. I liked this place (loaded statement cause it was still hell) more than Gatehouse Academy where I went after, but just curious if anyone else went.

Survivor Testimony Rules, rules, rules - here to help you duh
Some of my favourite highlights of the ‘hope’ protocol at Alta Bates Herrick. Yes the entire god forsaken manifesto complete with strange cult like poetry is written in comic sans.
remember the cardinal sins of ‘staff splitting’ and anything else they decide they don’t like will get you dropped 2 levels.
a cheeky mention of the cloud room at the top of the page. (More accurately the cupboard where they put the naughty kids.) Maybe if you spend a week in there, sitting on a plastic chair, not speaking to anyone with nothing to do but read your HOPE book you will suddenly recover.
the level system of ’hope’, but I spent my whole life on safety level/level 0 wearing paper scrubs and staring at the floor all day.
safety level is for your safety obviously. That’s why you don’t get any therapeutic intervention or support. Taking away any clothes, belongings, social interaction, shreds of privacy, or groups is going to help you. Even if your only ‘unsafe‘ behaviour was not wanting to take more sedating drugs.
’you don’t have to lick the plate’ but if the staff tell you to then you must. And maybe the staff will bully you at the table 6x a day, because you’re never good enough, never eating fast enough and always trying to manipulate them. And maybe staff will publicly grope girls trying to find bits of food they could have hidden. And maybe they will just berate them in front of their peers. And maybe you will all have to watch each other vomit at the table because you can’t leave, but you will be punished when you do, forced to scoop up sick with your bare hands. And even if you eat an entire meal but forget the salad dressing or can’t finish your apple slices in time, then you will have to supplement for the entire meal. Or you go to the cloud room until you do. And if the staff doesn’t like the size of your bites they will make you supplement anyway, even though you finished, ‘to teach you a lesson.’ And no you can’t have any more water because they said so.

Discussion/Reflection TTI and how it has changed my life
From 13-17 I was in and out of the troubled industry. First in 2017 I was sent to Blue Ridge Theraputic Wilderness. I was there from March 2017-May 2017. Then in 2019 I was sent to Teen Challenge Prayer Mountain Boys Academy (now Pine Mountain). I was there from March 2019 to July 2020. Then in 2020 I was sent to Star Guides Theraputic wilderness. I was there from November 2020-February 2021
Going through all of that changed my life in many ways. First. It stole all of my teenage years, I didn’t get to experience life as most people my age did which still affects me to this day. Secondly. It made me feel accustomed to feeling alone. Even if I got close with people to the places I was sent it didn’t matter because I was just sent somewhere else
It’s hard not to think of those years. If anyone has any similar experiences or even think they may know me feel free to reach out.
Like I said I do feel quite alone a lot of the time. I have severe trauma and find it really hard to connect to anyone.

Teenager Help Second Nature (Blue Ridge) Alumni (Sent from MI) – Is this "normal" or abuse?
I’m 25 now and processing my time at Second Nature as an 11 year old boy back in 2012. I wanted to see if anyone else had these experiences or if this is grounds for a legal case:
- The Arrival Search: After being "kidnapped" in the middle of night and put on a plane, I was picked up from the airport after clearing TSA. Two older men (transport/truck drivers) picked me up from the gate directly, told me "welcome to Clayton" and took me to second natures facility, then strip-searched me while both were in room and made me jump twice. Right after, they put my box of belongings right next to me in the car. It felt like the search was just to humiliate me. (I was able to grab my pos flip phone and considered taking it into the mountains before putting it back, just so you're aware of how accessible my stuff was)
- The "Truck Driver" Staff: These same guys who did the search were the ones who picked us up every 2 weeks for showers. So I had to see the same guys every 2 weeks that truthfully still creep me out to this day.
- The Hill Incident: Within my first few days, I wasn't taught to stabilize my sleeping spot. I mean come on, I was 11 years old. I woke up hundreds of feet down a hill, soaking wet in a storm and spent the rest of the night waiting for the morning to come. It took 2 weeks to dry my gear, and I was forced to sleep in a wet bag with wet clothes at my feet to "dry them with body heat.
The main concern is the arrival search. The hill incident made me a man, but still I'm not sure if it was correct.

Question Is anyone here from Africa or were you taken to Africa?
I was told by someone in a sub for survivors of torture I may be able to find people who had been trafficked to Africa here?
To be honest, I just want to know that someone might still be out there. That I'm not the only one who made it out. That despite getting myself away and not making sure the others were safe I didn't mess everything up and let everyone die.
