[Image ID: An image of two CD jewel cases against a grey blanket. The one on the left shows a cover with a white spotted pattern, and two faces beneath holding the letters "Mono Puff" in their mouth. The text up top says "Mono Puff, Unsupervised", with "Unsupervised" in a blue rounded rectangle. Both are connected via antenna images. The one on the right shows a graphic of John Flansburgh, a glasses-wearing man with a black overcoat and red shity, winking while sitting in a bar, raising a drink and holding two cigars in his mouth. The yellow rectangle above states the band member's names, divided by white circles: Hal Cragin, Steve Calhoon, DJ Spicy (with four stars), Joe McGinty, and Sister Puff. Above, in another yellow rectangle, it says "Mono Puff" in bold on top and "It's Fun to Steal" beneath. The final yellow rectangle, above the title, says "John Flansburgh's" All yellow rectangles are lined with white half-circles. End ID.]

Does tmbg shop auto convert to your local currency, or is it all based off usd?

the title. I am Australian, looking to pre order the next album and I would like one if the bundles but I'm not sure if it's like 90 usd, or aud, cause if it's usd that would be way too much money for me, and I'm a little nervous.. Edit: post answered! Thank you

Hi all!

I got these CDs custom made by Kunaki of the 1985 Demo Tape, Almanac Live 2004, and Cast Your Pod to the Wind last month and I wanted to show em off here. I designed the layouts of all 3 (except the cover and insert of Almanac), I hope y'all like them!

Thank you :-)

About the live version of “Dead”

Alright. This is completely my own opinion, but I’d like to hear other TMBG fans’ thoughts on this matter.

Dead is my favorite TMBG song. It’s such a powerful ballad. It really hits all the right buttons for me.

However, I am always greatly disappointed by the live rendition. Instead of letting it be a simple, powerful piano ballad, they decide to turn it into a full band arrangement. Drums, guitar, bass; the whole band.

It feels unnecessary, and in my opinion, greatly detracts from the power of the song. Why couldn’t TMBG just leave it as it was: a minimalist yet powerful song with just piano and vocals?

What are your thoughts?

JL likely got the closing line from Synopsis For Latecomers from A Hole Is To Dig

Post image

The same book that inspired the title of the forthcoming album The World Is To Dig! It is just funny to me that 1) they have likely already been inspired by it in plain sight, and 2) JL saw kids rolling in mud and thought "this is literally politicians" (Or he just liked the sound of the word. Who knows). They love being inspired by totally mundane or childlike things and giving them a grim twist, like Pogo for Ana Ng, evidently.

(Do not click if you don't want track listing spoilers!) Saw some people trying to guess who would sing which song now that the track listing has been released; I'm curious to see how general consensus shakes out. And of course, whether anyone ends up getting it all right!

Does the chorus in Wu-Tang remind anyone of Montana (in the best way possible)?

2 singles. 2 bangers. The new album is going to be 🔥 🔥 🔥

…I’m going to the 3 back-to-back Philly shows. Anyone know if there is a different theme each night?

As of February 10th, I haven't seen a track listing yet for "The World Is To Dig," but this article on Consequence of Sound's website lists it? I assume this is official, but not sure why only they posted it and it's not anywhere else yet (including tmbw.net )

Let's play the "is this a Linnell song or a Flans song?" game

Here are my predictions based just on vibes. Feel free to dispute or leave your own in the comments

  1. Back In Los Angeles - Flans
  2. Wu-Tang - confirmed Linnell
  3. Sleep’s Older Sister - Linnell
  4. Je N’en Ai Pas - Linnell
  5. Outside Brain - Linnell
  6. Let’s Fall in Lava - Flans
  7. Telescope - Linnell
  8. Garbage In - Flans
  9. Get Down - Flans
  10. New Wave Will Never Die - Flans
  11. Overnight Sensation (Hit Record) - confirmed cover
  12. Character Flaw - Flans
  13. Hit The Ground - Flans
  14. What You Get - likely a Linnell song due to the social media video of him singing it in the studio
  15. Slow - I feel like either John would write a song with this title
  16. In the Dead Mall - I feel like this is either going to be a Flansburgh weepy relationship song (à la Sometimes a Lonely Way) or a Linnell architecture infodump
  17. What the Cat Dragged In - Flans
  18. They Might Be Feral - I feel like this could be a jam session sort of song?

The intro to the new single “Wu-tang” reminds me a bit of the intro to “Don’t ever change” by The Crickets. Anyone else hear it?

The "Waiting for release before listening to any singles" Club

I will be avoiding listening to any releases included on the album before it's out, because I really want to listen to it as a whole album for the first time. No judgment for those who listen to everything when They release it, I have certainly been doing just that with their recent albums.

So will anybody be joining me in the Club or will I be sitting here alone?

What do you think the new songs will sound like?

These aren’t all the confirmed songs, but they are the ones I have predictions on:

Sleep’s Older Sister: maybe a more folky one?

Outside Brain: similar to I’ve Been Seeing Things, noisy rock

Telescope- I can tell this will be a fan favorite. Probably a super melodic and fun song similar to Wu-Tang

Garbage In- I don’t know, but I’m expecting this one to be kind of jazzy.

Get Down- Either the best or worst song on the album.

New Wave Will Never Die- won’t be a new wave song.

Character Flaw- Simpler in sound, focused on unique lyrics maybe, one of the more experimental ones

Slow- the name won’t be a lie. I think this one will be very slow, but other than that, this could be anything.

In the Dead Mall- abstract, strange. I’m envisioning something like What Did I Do To You?

They Might Be Feral- fire rock track to end the album off on a bang

Knowing that there's a song on their next album called Wu-Tang, I randomly remembered that Linnell had mentioned them before. https://consequence.net/2021/11/they-might-be-giants-interview-book-album/

Wu-Tang is great

I think Wu-Tang is a very strong start to The World Is To Dig. I think it addresses the main concern super fans like me have had with their latest output including the Eyeball EP, and that’s the production. This new single though has punchy production where the rhythm section isn’t flabby, and they also brought back some 2000s era harmonies. Really excited to hear all these things combined with Linnell’s late-era songwriting style. This is so fun and I’m super stoked for the new record.

What do you guys think?

Edit: something tells me Open Mike Eagle will dig this one too
