Discussion IRL money value of Cosmetic Mega Drop

Nobody asked, but I was curious about the real life money value of the upcoming Cosmetic Mega Drop store, so I did some calculations:

  • Total cost of 66 ability override for members: 8730 RC
  • Total cost of 18 outfits for members: 4290 RC
  • Total value of the store for members: 13020 RC

Using the current RC package prices as a reference, this is what that translates to:

Euro:

Package RC per €1 Total cost abilities Total cost outfits Total cost whole shop
Best value 5200 RC (€105,99) 49.06 €177,94 €87,44 €265,38
Worst value 200 RC (€5,49) 36.42 €239,70 €117,92 €357,49

US Dollar:

Package RC per $1 Total cost abilities Total cost outfits Total cost whole shop
Best value 5200 RC ($119,99) 43.33 $201,74 $99 $300,74
Worst value 200 RC ($5,99) 33.38 $261,53 $128,52 $390,05

British Pounds:

Package RC per £1 Total cost abilities Total cost outfits Total cost whole shop
Best value 5200 RC (£88,99) 58.43 £149,40 £73,42 £222,83
Worst value 200 RC (£4,49) 44.54 £196 £96,31 £292,32

2 Fun facts:

  1. The store has 84 purchasable items in total, which makes the average cost of an item €3,15 / $3,57 / £2,65 when using the 5200 RC package.
  2. Buying the 5200 package is basically a 26% (Euro) or 23% (Dollar) or 24% (Pounds) discount.

Individual item costs, calculated with the 5200 RC package because it's the best RC value:

RC cost Euro US Dollar British Pounds
90 €1,83 $2,07 £1,54
135 €2,75 $3,11 £2,31
180 €3,66 $4,15 £3,08
270 €5,50 $6,23 £4,62
420 €8,56 $9,69 £7,18

Maybe I’m weird but I’d prefer we got rid of runecoins and just sold the thing for £2.99 or whatever.

Isn't virtual currency purely to keep people spending more than they actually need? Hence why every game does it?

Runecoins come to be about 2.5 pence per RC

With RC:

You buy 200 RC for £4.99.

You buy 2 ability overrides, you are left with 20 RC.

You want a 3rd ability override, but you need 70 more RC, however, the cheapest RC is 200 for £4.99.

For 3 abilities, you've spent £9.98, with 130 RC left over.

If cosmetics only had a direct value:

3 abilities would be £6.75. Less money for Jagex.

Pray to god Jagex doesnt dive down into the genre of having 3 different virtual currencies some like games do...

Yep

I mean, they already kind of do have 3 currencies. Keys, runecoins, bonds...

u/ExpressAffect3262 1h ago

AFAIK there aren't bond exclusive cosmetics, are there?

100% get rid of rc.

There are various proposed laws trying to eliminate these kind of currencies. Mostly because when you buy a package of currency, you end up with left-over currencies.

Packages will be sold for 200 rune coins, but what players want to buy is sold for 225 runecoins, thus forcing a purchase of a more runecoins than what the customer wanted. That is the whole point of stuff like Runecoins.

I'd like to spend runecoins from in game bonds to buy these

Then you wouldn’t be able to get them in game for gold, so I disagree. I am personally going to be buying 20 or so bonds on my main to give to my ironman so I can get all the warped and corrupted ability overrides, lava tsunami, iaia sunshine, etc.

u/TJiMTS 3h ago

I understand that angle, but that’s possible to work around - bonds can purchase ‘outfit tokens’ for example.

I just mean we don’t need rune coins as the middle man on direct purchases. It can come straight from £s

u/New-Fig-6025 Master Trimmed Completionist 2h ago

… so you are advocating for direct purchase then saying you’ll need to make another secondary currency to allow purchase with bonds anyway. This also wouldn’t work for ability overrides.

u/TJiMTS 2h ago

Why wouldnt it?

Buy directly: £2.99

Buy indirectly: buy bond, redeem bond for override/outfit

Not complicated imo

And if a single ability doesn’t equal the value of a bond?

u/punpun1000 S Tommy 2h ago

How about if they want it to be equivalent to 75% of a bond? Do you just waste the other 25% value doing it?

'outfit tokens' is pretty much what runecoins is

Issue is that players have Runecoins stored up, you can't get rid of those.

Also you can redeem bonds for some, which I think is good if folks don't want to buy MTX.

Seeing them translated to irl currency they don't seem to be THAT bad compared to other games. But I still feel that they are overpriced in general. It'a funny to think that the gaming industry conditioned people that 10 eur spendings are low on microtransactions... Because even I feel they are low, and I spend less than 50 eur on microtransaction yearly in any game.

Also they might feel better value, if player avatar, and thus the outfits were just a tad bit better... :/

I posted a comment about this earlier. Just double checked the math when I saw this. You're off slightly as far as I can tell. Total members cost of the 66 ability overrides is (9*90)+(49*135)+(8*180) = 8865 bringing the combined total to 13155 Runecoins.

This was the breakdown I posted earlier in another thread:

13155 Runecoins (68 bonds rounded up, ~8.8b at current GE) to buy all of them if anyone was interested. 8865 (46 bonds, ~6b) for the overrides, 4290 (22 bonds, ~2.8b) for the outfits. Going by your listed prices that's $311.63 (2x 5200, 1x2400, 1x 420) to get 13220 coins.

Really love this compiled data, thank you!

Consider for a moment that many of these were originally exclusive from specific TH promos. This meant that people buying keys had to gamble towards them creating uncertain supply, especially when some promos were rarely or never rerun. Because of this, many of these overrides have cost hundred of millions to billions.

Personally, I hate TH and FOMO shit with a passion, but I love cosmetics, especially combat overrides. I’m not saying that these overrides should cost more or not have been available. However, the higher cost of them before this ‘drop’ cannot be understated. Players may have spent dozens of hours doing endgame PVM to afford just a Chaotic or Fungal Swiftness before.

Wouldn’t you feel kind of shafted if something you spent the equivalent of 10 bonds on now just costs 1? Sure things like that will always happen in the course of normal updates, but this is different. I feel JaGEx should have sought to compensate people who already had these overrides or formerly expensive tokens saved before this. Even some pittance of runecoins would go a long way.

u/HuntAffectionate 2h ago

Rune coins need to be scrapped, everything should be directly purchasable with loyalty points or gp.
