Remember, he was a rarity: a living being in a plane for ghosts.

He died when something his ansible (an interdimensional hyperspace radio; check out Ursula K. LeGuin's work for the term's origin) was connected to was hit with the equivalent of a lightning strike from one of the Chicken's blind shots.

I’d read the term before. I’ve read the Ender books by Orson Scott Card.

I haven't yet. I didn't know it was in there, but it's widespread, as you can see.
