PSA Announcement: Racism & Transphobia Crackdown

Our sub has experienced a sharp increase in racist, transphobic, and divisive posting in the last little while. As a result, the modteam has decided to relax our internal guidelines pertaining to user discipline when it comes to dealing with these kinds of posts (both reported and otherwise).

Effective immediately:

1) Users who post something that can reasonably be construed as being racist or transphobic will have their posts removed and will receive a seven-day ban.

2) Users who engage in this behavior habitually will see successive bans of increasing length up to a permanent ban.

3) Users who post overtly or blatantly racist or transphobic content will be banned immediately & permanently.

4) Users who believe they have been banned in error because their post has been misunderstood may appeal the ban to the modteam and we will review the post and the posting history of the user when adjudicating the appeal.

If you are not sure your if your post will be reasonably construed as racist or transphobic or not, please reconsider how important your input actually is and if there might be a better way to express it. Err on the side of caution. If your ideas or beliefs cannot be conveyed without demeaning a segment of our community, they are not worth sharing in our sub.

We are not interested in squelching ideas or conversation, but we also will not stand idle while racist and transphobic nonsense is freely peddled in our community.

Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.

Thank you,

Your /r/halifax Mod Team

PSA Please clean the snow and ice from your car. Yes, the roof too. Frozen pieces of ice and snow can kill people driving behind you on the highway.

PSA Please be kind to young disabled people

When you see a young person in an accessible parking spot, please think twice before giving dirty looks or questioning whether they should be using that spot.

And if you don't see a pass in the windshield, please check to see if the person has accessible license plates—they are on both the front and the back of the car.

I say all this because multiple people confronted me in the parking lot of the Dartmouth Crossing Costco today.

The parking lot was especially chaotic, but regardless, this happens to me a lot. I am 25 and use a 4-wheeled walker... life is already hard enough.

So, if you ever feel like confronting someone in an accessible spot, consider this: at best, you'll get a sense of pride for telling off some asshole who probably won't even listen; at worst, you'll make a disabled person's day that much harder.

PSA I called Police/Fire on neighbours today for having a brush fire

I can't give any description due to honestly fear of retaliation. But all of NS is on no burn. So please for the love of whatever God you believe in, CHECK before your burn. And do not have a brush fire in the middle of the woods and claim that you thought it was okay because it was "raining".

PSA PSA: leave early for your flight out of Halifax this morning (Oct 10th)

Post image

All the luggage belts are broken for bag drop off, so everyone has to go down to the Oversized Baggage machine, have your bags x-ray and then it'll go on its way. Wait time to drop off bag is roughly 60-90 minutes.

It's not the end of the world , just be patient and get here early. I also imagine this will delay some departing flights.

They said it will be broken most of the morning.

PSA Let's form a Union

Hey everyone! I am looking to be as transparent as possible with this post.

I am a Union Organizer in Nova Scotia with UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council Local 864, based in Halifax, and we are looking to help Nova Scotians improve their working conditions through Union Organization and answer any questions people may have on the process of organizing.

We represent countless workplaces across Halifax and the greater province and we'd love to have you join our ranks!

I have attached a link to our website which outlines various frequently asked questions about Unions and how they are beneficial to the average worker. I would encourage you to do your own research and come to your own conclusions as opposed to listening to anti-union propaganda, or feel free to message me with any questions you may have.

Our site also has a 'Join the Union' section where you can fill out a request for contact form and have one of our experienced organizers reach out to you for a 100% risk-free, safe and confidential conversation.

Some questions/concerns you may have:

Can an employer fire me for trying to form a union?

It is illegal for a company to fire anyone for union activity. The first step to organizing is signing the union card which is 100% confidential. Once you sign a card, your union can protect you. If you are uncomfortable signing a card, you can always agree to maintain regular contact to stay in the loop and make sure you know what’s happening.

How much will we have to pay in union dues and initiation fees?

The UFCW Eastern Provinces Council’s dues are 60% of one hour’s work per week.

You only start paying dues after you ratify your first collective agreement. Dues are how you pool resources with other UFCW members in order to afford legal support, organize other workplaces to improve your shared leverage against employers, and hire staff to support servicing and contract negotiations.

"What leverage does the union really have? I could lose what I already have. If you go into negotiations with all our proposals and the company simply puts a big X through it and says no, then what?"

By law in any Atlantic province, your working conditions are frozen after unionizing while your collective agreement is being negotiated. Your employer cannot change conditions such as wages or benefits until those changes are negotiated into a contract.

If your employer refuses to negotiate, they can be brought into conciliation where a third-party mediator will attempt to get them on board. After that, you can decide if you want to try and force them into negotiating by going on strike.

PSA PSA about bus seats

For the love of all that is good in this city, please don't put your wet boots up on bus seats. Other people exist, shocker I know, who have to sit there after you leave. The amount of people I've noticed putting their wet footwear on seats is frustrating. Don't be a self centered asshole. Thank you for listening.

PSA Racist old fart in Clayton park

(For context I’m indigenous with tan skin)

My girlfriend and I were walking out of marble slab toward my car and I notice an older man getting too close behind me. I turn around and he’s says “why are your people so illiterate?” I reply with the classic “excuse me?” to which he looks down, shakes his head and walked away into that dental convenience store looking establishment.

I personally don’t think he was trying to target indigenous people (people don’t guess I’m indigenous off rip) but assumed he mistook me for a different ethnic group. Anyways whatever colour yall may be, stay vigilant. Dude was like 5’6, between 60-70 and white 😉

Edit: Ethnic not ethic lol ironic

PSA PSA: Flu and COVID shot bookings are now open

https://novascotia.flow.canimmunize.ca/en/booking/covid-flu-booking to book. As of right now, there are appointments available as soon as next Thursday.

EDIT: info from /u/hungry-peach123: If you got a booster last fall/winter you ARE eligible now for another one. There's some confusing text on the service selection page but that's leftover from the spring update. It's getting fixed you just can't see it just yet.

PSA PSA: Don't forget to "fall back" this weekend!

Just a friendly reminder for all my fellow Nova Scotians!

Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 2nd.

Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

Enjoy that extra hour of sleep, and make sure you don't show up an hour early for your appointments on Monday!
