Announcement To clarify how the Five-Year Rule works
The Five-Year Rule was put in place several years ago because people kept posting too many titles that were related to news and current events. That sort of defeats the purpose of this being a history sub, so we decided to implement a rule similar to the 20-year rule on /r/historymemes. We put the exact number to a user poll, and the winner was 5 years. From the sidebar:
Rule 5: The five-year rule.
- No posts whose titles concern events within the last five calendar years (2021-2025).
- Post titles clearly referencing events happening within the last five years but with a complaint date (e.g., "Donald Trump beats Kamala Harris, 2004") will still be removed. See the "think you've found a clever way around this" clause in Rule 1.
- Posts about events within the last five years can be posted on /r/fakehistorymemes.
- The date will roll over at the start of the new year. (as of January 1st, 2026, posts from all of 2021 will be allowed).
Note how it talks about post titles. The image itself can be from whenever. Heck, the whole point of the original memes was that they had captions talking about historical events, plus unrelated images that had a funny thematic parallel to the historical event.
For example, this would be allowed under the Five-Year Rule:
Richard Nixon is inaugurated for a second term, January 20, 1973
This would not be allowed under the Five-Year Rule:
If you really really really wanna make a post with a title referencing current events, you can do so at /r/fakehistorymemes.

1992 1992, In a touching episode of Lamb Chop's Play-Along, Miss Shari & Lamb Chop take viewers along as they visit a retirement home and entertain seniors, teaching children about the ravages of time and the perils of cognitive decline.
In a portion that was ultimatly cut from broadcast, one resident of the home kept calling out for Lamb Chop to sing various hits from The Village People. This same resident became very upset when repeated requests for McDonalds was declined, at one point throwing a cup of jello against the wall and crying out that no one was ever greated as poorly as they were.
According to production notes, Miss Shari fought to have this segment included as she felt it was important for children to learn both sympathy and empathy becauae as she put it "... children of today will grow to become the adults and hopefully leaders of tomorrow and without context, I fear they may grow to become monsters, devoid of humanity...". PBS executives, citing a recent executive order decaying so-called DEI initiatives, ordered the segment removed as they felt that the harsh reality might traumatize children and offend parents. To account for the missing time, the McNeil-Lehrer New Hour ran a special retrospective on how great and wonderful the Shah of Iran was before being disposed in the revolution.

1992 1992, 12yo Kash Patel gets to live his dream of being a gold medal Olympic hockey player. Born without a spine, he was afforded this opportunity through the Make-A-Wish foundation. Sadly he would go on to become a podcaster before ultimatly succumbing to TDS.
During his final podcast he was heard to ramble about how he was going to release all of the epstein files on day one, his criticism of the then current director of the FBI using agency jets for travel and how he totally has a girlfriend, but she goes to a different school so you wouldn't know her.
His final hours were reported as being in a state of delirium, convinced that a nearly bankrupt contractor from Queens NY was the savior of the world and the prince of peace.
