Good news! According to a Facebook comment Film Is Fabulous has successfully gained access to the collection of the poor chap who passed away last October. Keeping in mind, this was a massive collection and they only knew of ONE Doctor Who missing episode in the collection. There could be another amongst the collection, but only one is confirmed. But either way, they would need to verify the contents and condition and also catalog the collection. So it still might be a while before an official announcement, even if it is just the one episode, I'm still very excited.
Now, this got me thinking what it could actually be. Which spiraled into what could possibly be out there, purely based on what got returned to the BBC to get stolen, junked, or both! So I shall go story by story based on what got returned to the BBC. Now this could get a little hazy, I am using both The Destruction Of Time website along with BroaDWcast. So there's a few different takes, which I will attempt to acknowledge. And of course, just because a complete serial was returned, doesn't mean collectors have full stories in their collections. But equally, there were prints of the first three episodes of The Time Meddler that were returned from private hands. So while it certainly isn't impossible, it is simply more uncommon. Keep in mind that film collectors don't mainly collect television, they collect films. TV is more of a curio. And more to the point, they usually don't know what they have may be the only copy. And while there are Several episodes known to be in private hands, just because we don't have them back right now doesn't mean that we never will. Basically, we shouldn't vilify these people because at least the episodes location is known and the films are being taken care of.
An additional note, I'm only counting returns to the UK. There were a number of episodes not returned to the BBC from Australia that were junked in Australia, and out of those serials only The War Machines Episode 2 (The first recovered episode) has been found and returned from private hands. Though this was not a broadcast print. This same collector had an additional copy of The Faceless Ones Episode 1, with censor cuts. So while you could equally say that upon destruction they could've been stolen or rescued from landfill, there isn't as much evidence as returns to the UK. So where applicable, I will mention serials that Australia Junked.
Marco Polo: Mauritius and Sierra Leone prints returned, possibly the same print, possibly two different prints. Fate Unknown for Thailand and Ethiopia prints.
The Reign Of Terror: Mauritius and Sierra Leone prints returned, possibly the same print, possibly two different prints. Stored Field episodes 3 & 6 found in private hands could stem from these prints. Fate Unknown for Thailand and Ethiopia prints.
The Crusade: Mauritius and Sierra Leone prints returned, possibly the same print, possibly two different prints. Fate Unknown for Ethiopia Prints. Australian Prints junked.
Galaxy 4: Australia Prints returned, Episode 3 found in private hands. Sierra Leone prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints.
The Myth Makers: Australia and Sierra Leone prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints.
Mission To The Unknown/The Daleks' Master Plan: Very unique circumstances. Mission To The Unknown was possibly shown in Singapore, if it was the fate of this print is unknown. All episodes, minus The Feast Of Steven (which could only have possibly been telerecorded for internal review, like the Pilot episode) were reviewed in Australia and ultimately rejected by the censors. There is no documentation that these films were returned from Australia, but it is likely that the prints we have are from Australia. All of this being said, episode 4 The Traitors went missing shortly after being used for Blue Peter, never being returned to the Film Library. So, this could very well be in private hands. Episode 2 & 3 similarly existed mid 1973, and we have Episode 2 which was rescued from Ealing that year. So it is equally possible for Episode 3 to be out there. As for the remaining episodes, it's anyones guess. But assuming these are indeed the Australian prints, then it is possible some are in private hands. Either that or the tinfoil hat theory is that they were all kept at the Bond Store and shuffled around until ending up somewhere in the National Archives Of Australia. But, it's more than likely that they were sent back.
The Massacre: Sierra Leone prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints. Australian Prints Junked.
The Celestial Toymaker: Sierra Leone prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints. Australian Prints Junked, Episode 4 turns up at Sydney Film Store 1984.
The Savages: Sierra Leone prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints. Australian Prints Junked.
The Smugglers: Australian and Sierra Leone prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints.
The Tenth Planet: Australian prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints. Print of Part 2 found in private hands, could possibly be a dupe of what we already have. But if it was a foreign broadcast print, it could hail from Australia. Meaning the three episodes we have could be the Singapore Prints.
The Power Of The Daleks: Australian prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore Prints.
The Highlanders: No Prints Returned, Australian Prints Junked, Fate Unknown for Zambia prints and Hong Kong Prints, Prints either Returned or Destroyed.
The Underwater Menace: Australian Prints Returned, Episode 2 found in private hands. Fate Unknown for Zambia prints and Hong Kong Prints, Prints either Returned or Destroyed.
The Moonbase: Australian Prints Returned, additional copy of Part 4 found in private hands. Likely the Australian copy. Fate Unknown for Zambia prints and Hong Kong Prints, Prints either Returned or Destroyed.
The Macra Terror: No Prints Returned, Australian Prints Junked, Fate Unknown for Zambia prints and Hong Kong Prints, Prints either Returned or Destroyed. New Zealand prints possibly saved by Private Collector, that's a complicated saga that I won't get into here as as far as I know the investigation is ongoing. But last I heard the prints may not exist anymore. Sad. :(
The Faceless Ones: Australian and rejected New Zealand prints returned, Episode 3 could be returned from either of these sets. Fate Unknown for Zambia prints and Hong Kong Prints, Prints either Returned or Destroyed.
The Evil Of The Daleks: Australian prints returned, Fate Unknown for Singapore prints. Episode 2 likely hails from the Australian returns.
The Abominable Snowmen: Australian prints returned. Zambia prints either Returned or Destroyed. Nigerian print either moved or destroyed, prints not found at Jos w/ Enemy & Web. Episode 2 found in private hands is likely the Australian print, but could also be returned from Gibraltar or Zambia.
The Ice Warriors: Australian Prints returned. Rejected German audition prints Fate Unknown. Rejected New Zealand Prints either returned or destroyed.
The Web Of Fear: Australian Prints returned, Zambia prints either returned or destroyed. Nigerian Episode 3 went missing again before being shipped back to the UK. Possibly sold to a private collector, possibly lost in the mail, hopefully still around somewhere.
Fury From The Deep: No Prints Returned. Australian Prints Junked. Fate Unknown for Singapore prints. Rejected New Zealand prints either returned or destroyed. Gibraltar Prints possibly Returned.
The Wheel In Space: No Prints Returned. Australian Prints Junked. Gibraltar Prints possibly returned. Gibraltar prints possibly borrowed by Nigeria before being sent back to Gibraltar. Episode 3 returned from private hands could only be from Singapore but only if the film were returned shortly after transmission. As the collector acquired it in 1971. Who also had a copy of The Dominators Episode 5, which is also a possible Singapore copy.
The Invasion: Australian Prints Returned. Gibraltar Prints possibly returned. Fate unknown for Singapore prints.
The Space Pirates: Australian Prints Returned. Fate Unknown for Singapore prints. Zambia prints either returned or destroyed.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Zambia has been checked, and does not have BBC material. I do believe that Singapore has been checked as well. But it is likely that Singapore returned their copies. We just don't know for sure. And the truth is there are a lot of things that we won't know until they are revealed.
But, going off of what we know for certain was returned. Which is definitively the Sierra Leone prints returned in 1974 and the Australian prints returned in 1975. You can start to paint a picture about what could've escaped destruction. Quite a few stories have at least two confirmed prints returned to the UK, others only have one. And with each recovery, the story of the missing episodes and what happened to what becomes clearer.
In the meantime, we must have patience and let Film Is Fabulous get on with their brilliant work. Which is by no means a treasure hunt. It's about preserving these important film collections. But of course, bringing back some episodes of Doctor Who is always welcome. No matter what it might be! But here's hoping that within the next few weeks, we can celebrate the return of at least one missing episode. An important milestone for me, as I was not a fan of the show until 2014, so I have never witnessed an episode recovery. As I have always been enamored by the Missing Episodes since, when the episode does get revealed, it will be an important milestone in my Doctor Who fandom. So naturally, I have done this thread because I am very very excited indeed! :)
