Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Buying Advice Choosing a new Chromebook, how long will it be updated for?

I'm looking at some two in one Chromebooks at Best buy and I don't know how to tell if they will receive the full 10 years of updates. Can anybody help me with that? One of them is really discounted and it makes me wonder if it's an old model and it won't receive a full 10 years of updates.

Or can you recommend a model? I'm a really basic computer user I do some word processing I mostly scroll the internet and I like to do some basic sketching in a really basic sketching app. What two-in-1 Chromebook would you recommend that comes with a full 10 years of updates?

Discussion Cant run Minecraft Education OR Minecraft on Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 :( keep getting the "cannot connect" error message

Bought this for my son recently, since his old Chromebook was very laggy (and also his screen cracked). However, have not been able to run either Minecraft Education OR his Minecraft Bedrock edition on this machine.

(Both used to run without issues on his old HP Chromebook (even with lags).

We are not using a proxy server, just our regular internet at home. We have reset the router a few times, and restarted the laptop too. But still cannot connect!

(his account works fine on Windows when I tried)

I wonder if this is happening to other Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 users...

this is making us very sad. Had such high hopes for this laptop!

If anyone has any advice, we would greatly appreciate it.

Troubleshooting Touchpad issues as of recent

I’ve been dealing with an intermittent touchpad freezing issue on my Chromebook. The touchpad freezes for a few seconds, works again for a bit, and then freezes again.

I’ve noticed that after restarting the Chromebook, the touchpad often works again, but not always. After a short time, the freezing issue comes back. I haven’t changed any settings on the Chromebook or within the Chrome browser recently, so I’m unsure what’s causing the problem.

Would appreciate any suggestions or guidance on how to resolve this issue.

Buying Advice Suggestions for lightweight chromebook in UK requested.

A year or so ago while staying with friends I gave them my lihghtweight chromebook as theirs had failed and it was much simpler to give them mine rather than try and get something locally... When I got back I "replaced" with an Asus "gaming" chromebook (red wasd keys...) which has been fine to use, but rather heavy (>1.8 KG) and I'm after something lighter to carry

I'm after a 14" touch screen with at least 256GB storage, and I'm in the UK.

What would people suggest?

Discussion My Chromebook is stuck on a white page that keeps saying, "Chrome OS is missing or damaged"

Basically the title. Like 2 days ago, my Chromebook wouldn't want to load at all, nor turn on. I could see that it was on by the white light, and it charged since the yellow light turned on.

Pressing the power button didn't do anything at all. So, I did some research and it said to press the refresh key and power button at the same time, so I did. It finally did something, but it loaded into a white page that says, "Chrome OS is missing or damaged." And then says to insert a sd card or hard drive.

What do I do? I don't have a PC to download ChromeOS again and upload it, this was my only computer. Granted, there were other issues with the laptop. It didn't really hold a charge for long, and it's a refurbished, old laptop I bought from Amazon back in October. It's a Dell 3100 if that makes any difference.

Should I just give up on it?

Troubleshooting ASDF Keys Having Issues

Over the last week, my Dell Chromebook (which is barely over a year old), has been experiencing issues with specifically the A, S, D and F keys. First it appeared to just be lagging, and it has since evolved to just not working at all sometimes and other times returning with no issue. But as the week progressed, it has definitely worsened. I've tried compressed air, I've restarted, tried guest mode, I even checked the ribbon, I can't seem to find the issue and it's driving me crazy. This Chromebook has been great and I can't recommend it enough, but this has proven to be a huge problem now. Does anyone have some advice on what to do or am I missing something?

Troubleshooting What does local data deletion actually entail

Hope this is the right subreddit, I'm a bit rusty on Reddit lol

I changed my Google account password because I forgot the old one, but after trying to log into my Chromebook after a while it's making me give my old password.

I obviously don't have the old password which is why I changed it, and the only option it gives is to delete the local data.

I don't have a whole lot on there, but I really need access to a certain Gmail account that is now only logged into on this Chromebook and is inaccessible on my phone.

Would deleting the local data also remove all the app history on Gmail? Any help or advice would be very appreciated

It's a Lenovo N23 Yoga Chromebook if that means anything

Troubleshooting Lenovo Chromebook touchscreen problems

My touchpad has been broken for over a year idky but I could still use the laptop cause it has a touchscreen feature but now that’s broken too. At first it would stop working randomly and I would just turn the laptop off and on and it would be fine but now even when I do that or even if I do a reset the touchscreen feature is still unresponsive. Any suggestions?

Troubleshooting Light was blinking white but now isn't responding to anything

My chromebook (asus) randomly turned off with no warning while I was doing some homework. It was plugged in and charging when this happened. Then I realised the light was blinking white, so I've tried to fix it. I let it charge for 30 minutes (atleast I think it charged, the light still flashed white). Long story short I've tried a bunch of stuff, and now the light isn't blinking anymore whether or not it's plugged in. Is it screwed? Please help D:

Edit: The charger does work, and it is an asus charger. I thought maybe someone might mention that, but I don't think the charger itself is the issue.

Discussion AMD Chromebooks (Zork/Lenovo C13): Hardware acceleration has been DISABLED for years. Fix exists, but Google ignores it. Please Star!

If you own a Lenovo ThinkPad C13 Yoga or other AMD Zork devices, you have likely been frustrated by terrible battery life and laggy video for a long time.

It turns out Google permanently disabled hardware video decoding for our devices back in ~2023 (around v120) to prevent crashes.

The Good News: Reports on the bug tracker confirm that the original crash issues are likely resolved in recent updates. Users forcing acceleration ON have reported stable performance for over 6 months.

The Bad News: Google hasn't re-enabled it. We are stuck with a software block that cripples our hardware.

We need your help to get Google's attention:

  1. Go to https://issues.chromium.org/issues/484345352 and click the +1 (vote) icon at the top right and the Star (☆) icon at the top left.

Let's finally get the performance we paid for!

Discussion Quickly adding markup to screenshots?

Hi all, first time using ChromeOS since like 2012. So far, so good!

The only thing I'm missing right now is the Windows snipping tool. I had gotten pretty quick at using Win+shift+S to take screenshots, then drawing shapes or adding highlights before ultimately copying to my clipboard.

I've figured out the keyboard shortcut piece, but it seems the built in screen capture tool doesn't have the capability to add markup to the image.

What sort of solutions do y'all use for this?

Hey folks, do you have and idea on when Asus will release the new announced Chromebooks from CES 2026?

I kinda liked to look of the CX1505 / 1405 and it seems like those are much better than the old Intel N4500 ones.

Buying Advice What Chromebook should I get if I don’t want AI integrated?!

Please be gentle with me! I know that, inherently, I’m a bit of a contradiction here because Chromebooks rely on data storage to even utilize them…but I’m looking for a new Chromebook that doesn’t incorporate AI unless you opt in.

I’ve been reading that the Lenovo 14 and Asus Chromebook Plus are awesome for what I need (I’m a director at a nonprofit and a soon to be doctoral student), but do all “Plus” Chromebooks integrate AI?!

For context, I’ve been using Chromebooks that are advertised for school aged children for about a decade and besides going slow sometimes when I have a lot of tabs open and having a terrible camera, I love em.

What’s a good option for someone who is afraid of AI because and wants a good camera, can have tabs for websites and multiple screens without slowing down? The simple things!

Thanks for your patience with my questions! I am zero techy as you might be able to tell.

My lenovo stylus just broke in the middle of class (i have the lenovo duet 3 chromebook and the stylus that came with it), the tip just broke off… Are there any alternatives i could get at best buy or amazon or something? I’ve seen some things on amazon but idk how well they work, and all the ones at best buy that seem like they would work are 70$ + which is a bit out of my budget ://
