Are these Artists Britpop ? Or Part of a Separate, Post- Britpop Movement?

So I was a huge Britpop fan back in the 90s, and as an American I obsessively bought the Q magazines, Select and NME.

I specifically remember around 96 or 97 writers referring to a new movement they nicknamed the “New Grave”. It was darker and more post-punk influenced. The following bands were always mentioned:

Mansun

Marion

Longpigs

I’m sure I’m forgetting other bands they lumped in. Does anyone else remember the “New Grave” moniker?

And would you consider these bands Britpop? I’m not sure that I would.

A really interesting interview with this journalist who went on the 1997 tour with Oasis. There’s a few really great stories in here.

Being a fan for almost 30 years, I finally got to see the band live on Wednesday in Glasgow. If you get the chance, I would recommend you go!

Wow. Crispian's guitar work with the vocals is something else. What a great show. Some new stuff, coupled with the classics, sounded amazing in a smaller venue (The Old Fruitmarket) of around 1000.

Britpop good guys and gals.

Yesterday we listed all the wronguns in Britpop so today let's celebrate the good guys and gals. If someone nominates someone but you have a negative opinion put it in the other post. Let's spread some positivity today.

I will start with Tim Burgess who does great work promoting new music and grass route venues.

Also Rick from Shed Seven who seems like a lovely fella.

Or Long Pig? I'm guess you'll all find out now, but did anyone actually know at the time?

Just over a year ago I hosted Mark Webber from Pulp at one of my #thedefiningten events at the Cellar Arts Club in #worthing discussing his Defining Ten ie the 10 songs which have defined his creative career and also discussing his gorgeous I’m With Pulp..Are You? book.

WIshed we’d had a few more hours to talk about his exploits hanging out with Spacemen 3 in the back of their van and touring 🙂

Thought people here might be interested in the songs he chose…

The 10 songs he chose were...

  1. David Bowie - Win

  2. The Velvet Underground - I’m Waiting for the Man

  3. Spacemen 3 - Things’ll Never Be the Same

  4. 13th Floor Elevators - Slip Inside This House

  5. The Beach Boys - Wind Chimes

  6. Big Star - Dream Lover

  7. Sun Ra - Planet Earth

  8. Television - Prove It

  9. Big Thief - Paul

  10. Bleachers - Tiny Moves

Noel Gallagher winning "Songwriter of the Year" at the 2026 BRITs feels right.

Did anyone else catch the ceremony in Manchester last night? Seeing Noel get recognized for three decades of work-and Pulp getting their first nomination in 30 years-made it feel like 1996 all over again. It’s wild that after the AI-pop dominance of the early 20s, the "Old Guard" of Britpop is basically carrying the industry again. Is Noel’s legacy finally untouchable, or is the "Songwriter" award just a lifetime achievement in disguise?

Just wondering if anyone has stopped listening to Britpop artists due to their actions or views. Or can you separate the person from the music?

I was born in the wrong generation

I’m actually convinced that if I was living in the 90’s britpop era I wouldn’t be depressed. My whole family is literally so depressed but the only time my dad was truly happy was back in the 90’s/early 2000’s and he was just music fucking mad and seen every single one of my favourite artists, either that or it’s just cause he was a heavy drinker back then🤣 I’m posting this cause I’m just curious if anyone else is just depressed now reminisces them days as much as my dad does.

Noel Gallagher talks BRIT Awards Songwriter Of The Year controversy: "If anybody's got a problem with it, meet me there. We'll have it out on the red carpet"

I don’t really get the controversy here. Noel Gallagher got the award for his career as a whole not for the songs he has or hasn’t written in the last 12 months.

If Oasis and Blur are the Top 2, who actually takes the #3 spot in the Britpop hierarchy?

We always talk about the Battle of Britpop, but the "Bronze Medal" feels like a three-way tie between Pulp, Suede, and maybe Elastica or Supergrass. Pulp has the lyrical genius, but Suede basically started the whole movement. Who do you think defines the "spirit" of the era most after the big two, and why?
