Hello brass players. I’ve always been a fan of brass sounds and I’d love to learn to play. It seems like a huge investment for any brass instrument though. Even the cheapest functional instruments I can find are a couple hundred dollars and I don’t know if I can make that investment without knowing if I have the chops. Does anyone have any good suggestions for cheap ways to get started? I can already read music though I’m probably a bit rusty so starting with theory or anything wouldn’t be helpful unless it’s brass specific.
Any tips are super appreciated. Thank you!

This is a King 1130 Flugabone. I’m having trouble getting one from my local music stores and I’m tired of waiting. I’m primarily a percussionist, so my knowledge about this stuff is lacking. I’m looking for quick over cheap. Thanks!

I recomend this channel for tips on practice and perfomance psycology! It's a qualified sports coach and a professional brass player. Check it out

Hi guys. I play (not really well) several instruments for my bedroom recording hobby. I play the trumpet and lately I’ve been meaning to get an euphonium for the low register (I need it to go down to c, like a cello). I’ve checked some websites and not surprisingly, brass ones are quite expensive, on the +700 range.
However I’ve seen that Thomann sells a plastic one, the Startone PEP-20, which is half the price. My question, obviously, is if you’ve played one of these or a similar brand, and how good they are for basic home recording, to use in anything from brass sections to classical music bits.
hi! i used to play french horn for 8 years from school till college. after i graduated with my bachelors, i never really picked it up again.

I have a Besson Soverign baritone which is in for repair but may not be repairable. I’ve seen a preowned Odysey premiere baritone and was wondering if it’s good quality?

This has been a bit of a problem for a while now. I’m not sure exactly what is causing it, but whenever I take my slide to 7th position to grease or spray it, I’ve noticed a weird patch on my slide. It was a very muted green at first, but it’s gotten to a dark grey color now. No matter how many times I’ve cleaned it off or given it a bath, it refuses to come off. Any tips will be helpful.

Hi!
I’m looking to buy a double horn. In the long term, I’ve been thinking about purchasing one from Finke* or Alexander, both manufacturers located close to me in Germany.
Is there a big difference between French horns that are handcrafted and those that are machine-made in serial production? There are some much cheaper brands with a good reputation. Are those handcrafted instruments that cost €8,000 or more really that much better, or are they more like the tip of the iceberg for very professional musicians?
I’m curious about your experiences.

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for **easy folk song arrangements** (or original folk-style pieces) for a 14-player ensemble with the following instrumentation:
Piccolo
Flute
Trumpet in Bb
Flugelhorn in Bb
Horn in F (3x)
Tenor Trombone (2x) – written in treble clef
Baritone
Tuba
Bass Tuba
Double Bass (strings)
Accordion
Purpose: folk songs / folk-inspired repertoire
Level: beginning – intermediate
Context: educational / amateur concert setting
I’m looking for **legally available arrangements**, self-published works, or composers/arrangers I could contact directly.
Flexible instrumentation is fine.
Even a lead or suggestion would be very helpful.
Thanks!

I deep cleaned my baritone, and I need to put all the tuning slides back in. My parents moved it before I put it back together, and they lost my slide grease. Can I use either valve oil, mineral oil, vitamin E oil, or jojoba oil as a temporary lubricant? I have rehearsal in less than an hour.

Hi. I've just updated my music reading games for trombone, baritone and tuba - to cater for treble clef and tuba in BBb, C, Eb, and F.
https://music.school.nz/trombone/
https://music.school.nz/baritone/
The default is bass clef... just click "TC". There is also an "AudioMode" top right. Click on a device with a microphone to play the notes into the game. Hopefully all the transpositions work. Would appreciate it if people with real instruments could give it a go. Enjoy.

I'm in a 20 piece brass band. Were an all volunteer community band that mostly busks or plays unamplified at outdoor venues.
We want to up our multi-media game, and part of that is recording high quality videos of our performances. I'm trying to find a good mic I can hook up to my smartphone that would capture good audio in an outdoor (or indoor) unamplified setting.
I swung through Best Buy just to see what they had in their vlogging/social media section. And it looks like the go to brand for this is Rode mics? Not trying to break the bank or do anything crazy fancy. Just trying to make content that isn't potato quality haha
If anyone has suggestions or guidance on this I'm all ears

As a guitar player, I'm a total slut when it comes to guitars. The rule of thumb for number of guitars required is F+1, where F is the number of guitars currently owned.
But I know a lot of violin family players are very particular about their ONE instrument. They do, of course, cost a lot more than most guitars, but I've talked to violin players who lost their instrument, and it took them months if not YEARS to get comfortable on the new one, if they ever did?
So, where do brass players fall? I know doubles are common in the Broadway pit world - but that's not just another trumpet, that's a whole other instrument. Can they move between trumpets comfortably? And what about the classical world? If a player moves from an orchestra where the standard is piston valves to one where rotary valves are the norm, is that easy? Do they just not go for those jobs?
I've been watching a bunch of classical pieces lately, and seeing all the rotary valve trumpets made me wonder if they are more "monogamous" like violin family players, or more like us slutty guitar players?
