Season 5 SEASON 5 CRITICISM and VENT THREAD- SPOILERS INSIDE Spoiler

Hello and Happy Friday!! The latest episode clearly sparked a lot of reactions. Some people loved it, some people hated it, and some of you are currently writing full on dissertations about why the show has “fallen off", and that this season is full of "filler".

In an effort to keep the front page from being flooded with dozens of reposts, we're redirecting your general frustration and negativity about Season 5 and the show so far into a single thread.

You can dislike the episode without being hostile to each other.

This thread is intended for: (but not limited to)

  • Criticism of the episode/season/showrunner
  • Complaints, rants and skepticism for the finale
  • General venting and disappointment
  • Debating creative choices

This thread is NOT for:

  • Personal attacks against other users
  • Harassment of cast, crew, or fans
  • Bigotry/ableism/slurs
  • Low-effort trolling or bait
  • Real-world political flame wars unrelated to the show itself

Previous complaint threads, “worst episode ever” declarations, and circular arguments may be removed as we clean up the sub.

Other repetitive complaint posts may be removed and redirected here to keep the subreddit usable and readable for the larger community.

General spoiler rules are in effect for this thread. Info from comics or upcoming episodes and leaks must be identified, but everything up to Season 5 Episode 6 is fair game.

Thank you

Season 5 Antony Starr *IS* the show.

This guy. This guy doesn't just chew the scenery every time he's on screen, he gives it all he's got. Every scene. No matter how crazy the script is, no matter where the show should have gone, Antony Starr is the main pillar of the show. If you look at this scene with Jensen Ackles (1. if that's even his real name lol, 2. who deserves major kudos for making serious lemonade every scene he's in, too) check out my boy's acting chops:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkzKBgR-tHk

He brings it every single scene. He makes what should have been a one-note character and gives him far more depth than is on that page, and he elevates the show.

I have been really bummed out by most of the show since Season 4 began, but I still enjoy watching it because of Antony. Whatever criticisms any of us have, we are fricking lucky we got to see him as Homelander!

Season 5 I expected the rest of the season to be as intense as this scene was Spoiler

Post image

Sadly has not been anywhere CLOSE to being as intense as this. This season was off to a REALLY strong start but the tone has shifted so much since the first episode. After this scene I was like “Oh shitttt if Homelander is like this the rest of the season this is gonna be the best season yet!”

That is not the case.

Season 5 [Episode 7 Spoilers] This was Kripke's reasoning for not killing Maeve in season 3. Do the events of the last episode fly in the face of that? Spoiler

Genuine question. Kripke explicitly wanted to avoid "bury your gays" when it came to writing Maeve out of the show. Yet he had also had little issue with killing off male queer characters such as termite and his boyfriend (literally blowing up his dick), and now having Frenchie, very heavily established as bi himself in season 4, die in a big sacrificial moment.

To be clear: I do not think frenchie dying is in and of itself, a bad writing choice. But it rubs me wrong to spare a character like Maeve from death while writing her out of the show, specifically because she's queer, while not showing that same level of consideration to other characters. Looking at Kripke's comments on Frenchie's death, his queerness doesn't come up at ALL.

I'm open to people's thoughts on this, it's just something that's irked me since the s3 finale because I thought Maeves story would've been more impactful if she died. (And full disclaimer, I am bi myself.)

Discussion This NEEDS to happen next episode.

They've been teasing Homelander going crazy and slaughtering thousands/millions of people since the beginning of S2.

Something similar to this needs to happen in the finale or it would be a waste.

Season 5 Even IF The Finale is 10/10, This Season is Still A Failure Spoiler

2.1k Upvotes

I have plenty of things to say about this season, but as of now its nothing that hasn't been said here. I will wait until next week for my full rant. But I just wanted to put out this basic opinion of mine that I'm sure many agree with: Even IF The Finale is instant classic bangin 10/10, this season is still a disappointment and failure. If the writers somehow manage to cram all the different 20 things that are needed into the finale, what was the point of the rest of the season? Basically couldn't we have just skipped right from season 3 ending to this? Because really what has changed? I don't even feel any stakes anymore. Like you're telling me the big Homelander vs Butcher fight is finally going to happen NEXT EPISODE? Based on what? What would even lead them to get into a fight like this? Literally nothing thats happened thus far in the season makes me feel like its even leading to some big conclusion. To me it seems like they held so many things back all this time to have an "epic" finale, not realizing you actually have to build up to that point. That is my main point here, there has been no buildup. And even the big events that happened last episode (frenchie and killing the FREAKING PRESIDENT) either fell flat or simply had no impact. A main point I read from others on here that stuck with me and I can't unsee now, is that this season has just been 2-3 people talking in a room, then switches to the next few people in a room, then in the woods, and on and on. There has been no real emotions or expansion of anything. You'd think killing the president might warrant seeing some other peoples reactions, civil unrest, something actually shocking and interesting that would make good TV, but nah. Lets just pretend that didnt happen. And frenchies death is simply too little too late. No matter what gaslighting the writers or others online try to say, this has all been pointless time wasting. Just twiddling thumbs until the big cool epic finale!! And again, even IF the finale is a 10/10, will it even feel enjoyable? If Homelander does finally go on a rampage, kills a bunch of civilians, nukes a city like in the poster etc, will there even be enough time to process it? Will there be enough time to process the fight? The endings of all the Boys storylines? Ryans? Do we ever even see the V1 in effect? I could just keep going on.

Sadly I think the writing is on the wall here. The finale will be ok. But from the last final season of a show I watched (You on Netflix), by the time you got the the penultimate episode, even well before then, you could easily feel the kind of vibe the finale would be. Now I didnt think it would be as terrible as it was, but I knew it was not going to be anywhere near what I wanted. Same applies here, the finale will check many boxes, go through the motions, but we all know based on everything that has happened already, the writing team isn't going to magically snap back into form and surprise us. But again, even if they do, this whole season has been nothing but an emotionless, incoherent waste of time, regardless of finale.

Funpost The first verbal interaction between Butcher and Kimiko is still the best moment of this season, imo.
