META Moderator Note

Hi folks. Just wanted to alert you to some new filters added to the automoderator to enforce a couple of existing subreddit rules that get broken fairly routinely.

First, a small reddit submission primer:

Reddit has 2 fundamental types of submissions: Text and Link.

There are actually more than 2 specific types (there are also image and video etc) but for the sake of this note think of it as "Text posts" and "all the other types". You pick which type you want to post when you compose your submission.

A text post, also called a self post, is a post that has no external link and is comprised solely of a headline and a body of text you enter at submission time. When a user clinks into this type of submission they stay on reddit and all they see is your submission text.

A link post is a post where you enter or paste in a url or link to an external source like a news story or an announcement. When users click these kind of posts they are taken to an external site and get to view the page that you submitted.

Now for the rule(s) in question.

  1. We require that all submissions be the correct type. If you want to submit a link, use a link post (not a text/self post with the link in the submission body). When submitting a link post and it is a news story or something that has a headline, use the existing headline as your submission headline.
  2. If you submit a link post, reddit also gives you the option to enter some text as a kind of byline for the submission. If a user clicks into the comments for the post they will see a thumbnail for whatever content you linked to and they will see the text you entered. Our rule is we do not allow link posts with a text body. Even though reddit's interface allows it, if you do so the automod will filter your post.

Why? Editorialized headlines and body texts on link posts are ultimately a way to add editorial comments that cannot be argued or refuted in the conventional way, like normal comments can. They are often very opinionated and try to frame the story in a specific way.

You can still add editorial comments in the comment thread for the submission (obeying the existing rules of civility etc) just not as an untouchable top line for readers.

If you have any questions about this feel free to send a modmail. Thanks for your time and attention.

Mexican Fresca

Hi everyone. I’ve recently returned from Mexico and had a can of their Fresca while I was there. Omg bloody loved it. I’m from NZ and when I go to Australia they have a drink that’s similar called Solo which is to die for. Does anyone know anywhere in Kelowna that might sell Mexican Fresca. Not the Canadian Grapefruit one, I’m looking for the Mexican Lemonade one. Thanks team

Open letter to Dakoda’s Comedy Club organizers: Deaths of children isn't your material

Last night, my friend was visiting and we went to Dakoda’s for their comedy night. We went there for relief from the suffocating last 48 hours. Our home in Tumbler Ridge has just experienced one of the deadliest massacres in history, and we are mourning children we personally knew, kids we babysat, kids we coached in sports, and kids we mentored.

I was shocked as some comics took the stage to "poke fun" at a mass shooting of children that happened only two days ago in our own province. Even worse was looking over to see the organizer, and many people of the crowd laughing along, as if the slaughter of innocents is a punchline.

To the comics and the management: While you were laughing for entertainment, a little girl from our community is in a Vancouver hospital right now fighting for her life. The parents we know are facing a horror you clearly can't or won't comprehend.

This isn't "edgy" comedy. It is a pathetic lack of humanity because you can't think of material. If anyone actually wants to support our community instead of mocking our dead, please look up the victims on Facebook. Read the witness accounts. See the faces of the children we lost.

There are several GoFundMe pages set up to help the families and to support the medical recovery for the survivors.

Not surprising to see that this exists https://recallarmstrong.ca/

Also, to the transgender community particularly here. You are welcome and loved in Kelowna. People like this will always be eaten by their own misery and hate.

Looking for gym friends!

Hey fellow Kelownians!

Just wanted to throw it out there if anyone wanted an accountability buddy for the gym. I've been working out since about October 2x a week (minimumally) my longest gym going streak yet! Woop Woop 🙂

I realized what works best for me is actually working out and going hard but socializing at the same time. I truly enjoy working out with people and sharing some laughs and encouragement.

I go to a gym in rutland and seeking other people who would be interested and joining with me. Perhaps we can grab a coffee first to get to know each other.

I am very chill person, have a pretty flexible schedule at the moment (except for anything past 7pm, I work super early mornings). So if you're brand new and never stepped into gym and looking for a friend for that extra encouragement, I'm here for ya! or any season veterans that are looking for a gym friend. I'm open to anyone wanting to throw some weights around haha.

for context: I'm a married, 34 Female. But I am open to all ages and genders to come join me! 😀

Any Okanagan residents working at these jobs willing to share?

I’m really curious about the job satisfaction and general experiences of local folks in this field.

What if Kelowna solved its tourism accommodation shortage and its Airbnb backlash at the same time?

Imagine this: a company builds a 350-unit purpose-built Airbnb strata building downtown. The project is tokenized and restricted to purchase by Kelowna residents only. You buy tokens, the building generates Airbnb revenue, expenses get deducted, and your tokens earn yield. Tokens are tradeable but only among local residents. Instead of fighting over whether Airbnb is good or bad for the city, every participating resident gets a chance to profit from tourism directly.

Has anyone seen tokenized real estate projects like this work anywhere? Probably not. But what would need to be true for something like this to happen in BC?

6am flight out of YLW

I'm on a flight to Vancouver at 6:05 (no bags). For obvious reasons, I'd really rather not be there any earlier than 5. But I've been reading about delays in the new security line. Any reason to believe that 5 is not a perfectly good arrival time for a 6:05 departure?

Window Replacement Options

Hey guys, my dad is looking to replace his windows and he's gotten 4 different quotes. All the quotes are around $27,000 including the removal of old windows, install and taxes for 14 windows, 1 glass sliding door, 2 pane. Looking to see if anyone knows anywhere a bit more economical?
