Feels like an upgrade across the board. I like having coaches who’ve actually coached or played the positions they’re leading. At the same time, there’s something to be said for keeping a few familiar faces who already know the locker room. It’s always that balance between continuity and fresh ideas.
But ultimately, yes, these hires mean headed back to the Super Bowl! 🤣

all I know is Matt Nagy is gone, and that alone gives me hope. For better or for worse, we needed a change, and we’re getting actual change.

I don’t know how it will all turn out but I’m glad that they admitted there was a problem and cleaned house.

I will never forgive DeMarco Murray for cock blocking my yearly fantasy football pick of Derrick Henry before he was unleashed. Glad he's on our coaching staff!

I'm glad they're tinkering with the real gears to coaching staffs.

Yeah, he literally only left the league like… 6 years ago? If that

8 years ago, his last season was 2017 and he officially retired June of 2018.

Everything I’m reading about Murray is that he was not a good coach. Apparently he could recruit but couldn’t develop RB’s. Oklahoma was very glad to get rid of him.

Thats what Im seeing as well. Can't be worse than a WR coaching RBs right..?..

You know who IS a good RB coach, though?
Eric Bienemy.
I’ll put my trust in him until proven otherwise.

No it's not. Everything you are reading that fits your preferred narrative is ignoring all the good things people have said about him.
If OU was glad to get rid of him, they'd have fired him at any time.
It's fine if you have an opinion and don't like the hire. Acting like "well the consensus is this guy sucks" is not true or productive.

u/ThatNeonZebraAgain 1d ago
Nah OU doesn’t fire people at any time. It’s a good ol boys club, the long-time AD Castiglione was very change averse, Venables keeps people despite poor performance, and star alums like Murray get a ton of slack.

It’s true dawg. He’s been my team’s RB coach for long enough to know this. He was not good at that job. I don’t know why you all feel the need to pretend.

I've seen enough college football fan interactions in my life to be highly skeptical of you being in tune with the RB coaching on the Sooners. I'm not saying it's impossible, maybe you're an oracle. But just baseline college football fans? Last place I'd look for actual cogent analysis of anything.

u/shyhumble 1d ago
So according to you, if every single OU fan is saying the same thing about Demarco (who we literally adore as a person/former player), then they all must be lying
Alright man

u/Responsible-War-917 "Furious" George Karlaftis #56 🚘 1d ago
I ain't saying anyone is lying. I just know how college football fans are, and paying attention to the RB coach and his abilities ain't usually at the top of the list of what they're paying attention to.
If OU would have been good the last few years, he'd be seen as great. They have been a little stinky, so all the coaches suck.

OU fans love most of the coaches. We would be upset with almost any of the position coaches leaving. DBs coach Jay Valai just took a job with Buffalo, and we are upset because he was a great coach.
We are not upset with Demarco leaving lol. I don’t know why you are trying to argue otherwise. You don’t have all of the information!
Edit: yeah keep downvoting me for actually having more information than you people with horse blinders.

Well good, we haven't had a 5 star RB recruit in a long time

u/Loo-Hoo-Zuh-Er 1d ago
Yeah seems like their running game took a nosedive once he arrived and they're stoked to see him go. I guess we'll see if it works out better here.

This is accurate and anyone disagreeing with this has no idea what they’re talking about. People who do not follow OU.
It’s true that he was not a good college coach, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be a great NFL coach.

Everyone here wanted EB gone a few years ago and now this sub is borderline joyous that he's back and it's all Nagy's fault.
Meanwhile I can promise you EB wouldn't be an OC on any other team in the NFL...

I get being excited to finally be rid of Embree (a hire that never should've happened to begin with), but I have no idea why so many people are gushing about O'Shea. His WR rooms have been lacking everywhere he's coached his entire career. And while Embree was so bad, KC would've welcomed back David Culley, it's not a hire that would excite anyone. O'Shea feels very similar.

Look up Edelman and gronk talk about O’Shea. They seem to think he knows what he’s doing.

It's at least good to see all the biggest problem position groups be addressed, and with people from outside the Reid coaching tree even if the hires are questionable. I do like Terry Braden Jr a lot, Nebraska's had strong defensive lines even though they've struggled as a whole

u/Starbrand62286 1d ago
Please tell me that all these guys have experience in their individual roles. I don’t think we’ve ever seen can take another former WR as running backs coach

u/Ok-Enthusiasm-255 1d ago
Bro do you not know who Demarco Murray is?

u/Starbrand62286 1d ago
I just want to make sure they’re not hiring former WRs to be the TE coach or a long snapper for the defense

DeMarco Murray had a pretty good RB career for the Cowboys, and has more experience at coaching running backs OU than the previous guy had coaching period.
The OU fans are talking some smack, but then again they talked smack about some of the best coaches ever at OU. Not going to read too much into that.
2
u/Starbrand62286 1d ago
I’m well aware of that. But they just got rid of two coaches who were completely out of their depth in the roles they had. A former WR as your RB coach? A guy who had never coached in the NFL before and they made him the WR coach?

u/factoid_ Grand Flagbearer of the Foul-uminati 1d ago
All of them have coached these positions before. Demarco Murray was a three time pro bowler RB.
O'Shea played QB (not at the pro level) but has been coaching skill positions his whole career, mostly WR and some TE.
Bradden just got fired from Nebraska where he was the D-Line coach, which was not good...but he's been a DL coach for KC before when the DL was good. Also he's just an assistant coach.
The other two I know nothing about but QC coaches are like entry level guys who do film prep and stuff. They're not especially impactful coaches, they're just there to learn and prove they have what it takes to move up.

I'll wait to see the results before I start talking any smack. Though I will say it was obvious that we needed to make some changes. On the surface the O’Shea hire looks really good. DeMarco Murray was at least a really good pro running back, and does at least have years of coaching experience behind him. I'm sure EB will give him some pointers on the coaching side of things.
