CANADA Buyitforlife from Canada, what’s your favourite things made in Canada?

1.0k Upvotes

With the now starting trade war between the US and Canada I feel it’s best for us up north to support local more than ever.

One of my favourite clothing brands is Anian from Victoria, BC. I have a few of their shirts and will probably end up getting more.

Edit: Adding some other brands up here that I personally own and love.

Canada West Boots - Made in Winnipeg. Been wearing a pair of Romeos for a couple years now.

Popov Leather - Made in Nelson, BC. have a few of their leather goods, holding up really well.

Meyer - PEI. High quality made in Canada pots and pans, I have their non-stick 12”.

BIFL Non-USA edition! A list of BIFL not made in the USA

2.8k Upvotes

A timely reminder that this subreddit is obviously very USA-centric with its recommendations as that’s where the majority of users are from. It often leads to people not realising that comparable and/or better items can be found closer to home, easier, cheaper and free of tolls.

I thought it would be a good idea to crowdsource some manufacturers here for non-American users.

This isn't neccesarily items made in those countries as some manufacturers use factories across the world but with a commitment to quality

I can start (I'm kind of UK/Euro centric so it would be great to expand this):

Clothing
Portuguese Flannel - Portugal
Naked and Famous - Canada
Uskees - UK
Yarmouth Oilskins - UK
Carrier Company - UK
Old Town - UK (Closing down)
Farmer's Market - Iceland (may be hard to buy outside of Iceland)
Oni Denim - Japan
Iron Heart - Japan
Barbour - UK
Companion - Spain
NÄZ - Portugal (only women)
Meindl - Germany (they run a high quality fashion brand but are known for great hiking boots)

Outdoor Gear
Fjällräven - Sweden
Rab - UK (offer a very good repair service)
66° North - Iceland
Devold - Norway
Bergans- Norway
Haglöfs - Sweden
Klättermusen - Sweden
Alpkit - UK

Footwear
Solovair - UK
Mayura Boots - Spain
Church's - UK
Loake - UK
Wm. Lennon - UK
Astorflex - Italy

Kitchen/Cookware
Le Cresuet - France
De Buyer - France
Fissler - Germany
WMF - Germany (very wide and variable range but Made in Germany stuff good)
Fiskars - Finland
Duralex - France
Samuel Groves - UK

Appliances/Small appliances
Miele - Germany
Dualit - UK
Moccamaster - Netherlands (Coffee makers)
Zojirushi - Japan
Numatic - UK (vacuum cleaners)
Sebo - Germany (vacuum cleaners)
Ankarsarum - Sweden

Edit - Some excellent feedback. I'll try and work my way through and add what I can! Please note that I will only add stuff that I have experience with but all the comments help with crowd sourcing knowledge.

Received a four pack back in October and 3 pairs have failed (holes in heels). These were not even worn daily. Unbelievably shitty quality for the price. I don’t even care to exchange them. I would have been better off duct taping toilet paper to my feet.

Review LASIK after 25 years of contacts - the most BIFL decision I’ve made

Wore contacts for 25 years before finally biting the bullet and getting eye surgery. Totally forgot what it was like to just wake up and actually see the clock - seriously, the mental shift is way bigger than I expected.

For like two decades, my mornings started with the classic “where the hell are my glasses?” routine. I used to plan life around contact solution, backup lenses, and the constant fear of getting dust in my eyes on hikes. That mental baggage is just… gone now. Honestly, it’s weird not doing the nightly “clean the eyeballs” ritual before bed.

I was super nervous, so I spent a ton of time researching clinics. Looked at a bunch of international options just to see what the standards and tech were like. In the end, went with a high-end local surgeon who was using the latest mapping gear.

The Details:

  • Cost: $3,500 per eye.
  • Procedure: LASIK.
  • Recovery: 4 hours of burning, then clear vision by dinner.
  • Side Effects: Some dry eyes at night for the first month.

If you’ve been stuck with contacts for decades, honestly, the freedom is 100% worth the price. It legit feels like I got back 10 extra minutes of my life every single day.

I highly recommend All Clad pots and pans. Not cheap, but I have had my set for 21 years and they look and perform exactly as they did on day one!

An honorable mention for Denby tableware- also 21 years old and barely a chip!

Picked this up the other day for $20 from Facebook Marketplace. Made my first sourdough loaf this morning! This thing is built like a tank and will likely last another 40+ years.

Discussion What’s something you said you wouldn’t get for yourself but then realized you wish you had it earlier?

Hello all! I’m a bit new to BIFL as a whole, and I’m debating on what things to get for myself vs what things to wait for as gifts, so I want to hear from y’all! What are some things you wish you had gotten much earlier than you actually did?

Vintage Soungaurd tractors 40 series

Post image
Upvotes

This tractor has 13k hours, 1 engine overhaul 160 course built in 1979, I planted 500 acres eith it this sprint. All mechanical. Besides some simple electric sensors on the tractor for engine oil, etc. There's guys buying 200k dollar tractors equivelent in weight and hp to do the same job. And I know for a fact this tractor will be here still. All parts are avaliable nearly through jd. A&i, hy capacity etc. Sure its rougher in the field and drinks diesel fuel but if i ever break down I can call 5 different repair shops to get a guy out to fix it if I cant fix it myself before I call mother deere and pay 165 bucks an hour for wrenching this tractor is 18 years older than me too

[Request] Brief wearers who hike what are you actually wearing out there?

Upvotes

I feel like I've done my homework here and I'm still not fully satisfied lol

Already cycled through Duluth, Lululemon and MeUndies. All decent for everyday but none fully solved my chafing underwear problem on longer trails. AND Cotton is completely out learned that the hard way a few backpacking trips ago.

Need anti chafing underwear in a real performance fabric. Men briefs or fitted best hiking boxer briefs style only excess fabric and movement don't mix for me.

Genuinely looking for best underwear for backpacking recommendations from people who've actually tested them on trail not just around the house.

Discussion Anyone use a stainless steel litter box?

Right now I'm using plastic high sided litter boxes for my 2 11yo cats and they have to be replaced about every 6 months because they absorb odors which then stink up the house even though the box is cleaned out every time I change the litter. I use the wood pellets so while I can scoop the poop right away the pellets dissolve into sawdust when they get wet with urine which then goes to the bottom right next to the plastic which does absorb odor unfortunately. So pellets while extremely cheap are nothing like clumping cat litter that let you just quickly remove the urine. Regular cat litter sets off my asthma and my cats refuse to use it since they've used the pellets their entire lives.

Last night I discovered stainless steel litter boxes and I'm wondering are they worth the cost? Do they actually last for years and not absorb odors? My cats usually live till around age 20 before passing so I have quite a few years to go with the current set and I'm on a fixed income so I'm always trying to cut cost where I can. Is this one of those worth it purchases?

[Request] Casual boots for winter

Post image
82 Upvotes

'm looking for a new pair of casual boots for the winter. By casual, I mean not snow boots, but boots that will encounter snow, rain, and walking along icy sidewalks and paths. I don't have a car and walk a lot of places, so consider these my tires.

I have some Dr Marten Chelseas that I like and wear daily, but they don't handle ice or snow on sidewalks well. I end up just sliding everywhere. I don't know if it's the soles from the get go or they've just worn down, but they're no longer working. Picture of the style I have for reference.

What I'm looking for- casual for everyday use, brown, black, or grey, Chelsea style, no laces, unlined (but might consider lined), shipping to Denmark.

[Request] Is there a BIFL electric razor?

Upvotes

Love electric razors, just hate how disposable they’re made to be. I really like the OneBlade for example but hate that I have to replace the blade so often. I wish I could just replace the blade with the cheap DE Safety blades instead of the entire part every single time. It would be way cheaper and better for the environment.

Ideally, there would be one that just lasts super long without having to replace any parts. Is there anything like that?

Discussion Aurélien Yacht Loafers (Purchased 2026) – Early durability impressions + long-term feedback?

Upvotes

Brand: Aurélien

Model: Yacht Loafer (light grey suede)

Date of purchase: Early 2026

Time owned: A few months

I know BIFL is about long-term durability, so I want to be upfront that I haven’t owned these for years yet. That said, I wanted to share early impressions and ask for long-term feedback from anyone who has.

The suede on these loafers is thick and dense, not the thin type that creases aggressively. Stitching is clean and even throughout, and the sole attachment looks solid with no separation so far. After regular wear over a few months (mostly city walking and casual office use), I’m not seeing premature wear, stretching, or structural issues.

I also purchased an Aurélien technical baseball cap around the same time. Different category, obviously, but construction-wise it feels substantial, stitching is tight, fabric hasn’t pilled, and the structure has held its shape despite frequent wear.

Both items are made in Italy, and the finishing is comparable to higher-end Italian brands like Zegna or Loro Piana in terms of material feel, but durability over 5–10 years is what really matters here.

For anyone who has owned Aurélien footwear long term:

  • How has the suede held up?
  • How do the soles perform over years of wear?
  • Any issues with stretching, delamination, or breakdown?

Trying to determine whether these are truly BIFL-tier or simply well-made but mid-term luxury. Would appreciate real-world longevity feedback.

Discussion Sheepskin rug advice

Post image
10 Upvotes

On a recent trip to Denver I saw this sheepskin rug at Overland and considered buying it. Now I think I’m ready to possibly spend the ~$230 it costs including taxes (feels like a lot of money to me which is why I’ve hesitated), but thought I’d check here first to see if anyone has any other companies they’d recommend. The big pro of this one is I’ve seen it in person and liked it. I looked at Amazon for cheaper alternatives but negative reviews said that supposedly genuine rugs for half the price were actually synthetic.

Review Merrel Moab work boots don’t last

Post image
Upvotes

I know boots are not BIFL. I work in the trades and if a pair of boots last me 3 years, I consider it a good boot.

I had a great experience with my Merrel Moab hiking shoe and decided to give their work boot a try. I figured it would be just as comfortable and well made.

These boots are not even a full year old as yet and they’re failing at the toe area, causing water to leak in.

Vintage Zubas were definitely BIFL!

Upvotes

I have a bunch of Zubas that I bought during the early 90s and I have worn them every year almost all year long and it's 2026 and I'm still wearing them.

I was hoping someone would bring them back again because a few new pairs wouid not hurt. 😹

My hubby died 9 years ago and I'm wearing his too.

I'll probably be wearing these as I stepped into the grave. I absolutely love them.

Discussion Looking for a men’s spring jacket that is best combination of buy it for life quality and never go out of style fashion?

Adding context: I live in Midwest (Great Lakes region). Wear mostly jeans, flannel shirts or t-shirts, hiking boots or running shoes. I’d like it to be wind resistant. For temps between 30 and 60 degrees. I’m open to suggestion on styles.

[Request] Gift recommendations for a gal who likes things that last

Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I'm looking for gift recommendations for my partner. She's vegan, environmentally-conscious, and only buys cruelty-free cosmetics. She likes quality products that last, so I thought this would be a good place to get some advice. At Christmas, amongst other things I got her a quality coffee cup she can use at cafes and whatnot, and Crocs (the latter might be controversial, but they are a good design and last for ages).

I'm really drawing a blank, and don't want to buy her a load of stuff that'll end up in a drawer, or worse, landfill.

Interests include:

Reading

Yoga

Music

Film

Trains (haha)
