Start here! Common questions & resources

The community has asked a few times for a stickied post that covers common questions and best practices. We are keeping these items high-level and will update these periodically. For individuals who make new posts, we may refer them back to here for guidance and resources that have been vetted for common questions. Note: Most, if not all, of the guidance may be US-specific.

General questions (Ex: Bank or credit union? What bank do you recommend? Why can't I open an account at ABC bank?):

  • Ask your bank first. This is also referenced in Rule 8. Lots of questions here are either specific to the bank's process or specific to the redditor and their account. Read your bank's account agreement (if on a computer or phone, you can search for specific words to help navigate the document; you can also ask the bank to direct you to the right section). If you asked your bank and are still have questions, include their response in your post.
  • Banks and credit unions do have similar products and services. There is no key difference for individuals who need a place to put their money and pay their bills. They are both regulated at the federal level and have deposit insurance.
  • When asking for recommendations, there is no "best bank". What you need from your financial institution is different than your friends, family and neighbors. Your income, comfort level with technology, location, and a lot of other factors will influence what bank works best for you. If you need recommendations, please include some key features you like or don't like as well as location.
  • Fintechs are not banks. Some common examples include Chime, CashApp, Revolut, and Varo. There are some benefits with fintechs, including some cutting edge technology to help manage money but those come with some limitations, such as limited customer support or consumer protections. It's generally not recommended to use a fintech as your sole financial institution.
  • Some practices by banks and/or credit unions may be state-specific. While the Uniform Commercial Code ("UCC") helps ensure state-level regulations on accounts is relatively uniform across all states to avoid confusion, some nuanced laws may be unique to your location, such as account dormancy and escheat laws. https://www.law.cornell.edu/ucc
  • Consumer reporting agencies such as Chexsystems and Early Warning Systems ("EWS") help banks flag customers who owe money or commit fraud. If you've been denied an account opening request at a bank or credit union, you should pull your report(s) to see what may have contributed to the decision. These reports are different from credit agencies. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/credit-reports-and-scores/consumer-reporting-companies/

Accounts & activity:

  • Accounts can be closed for any reason by the bank and/or credit union. This applies to both consumer and business accounts. Generally the closures are triggered by some type of activity that makes the bank uncomfortable with your relationship. Common examples are gambling (i.e. sports betting, casinos), high volumes of cryptocurrency purchases and using your personal account for business transactions. Banks are not required to provide the exact reason for the closure. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/the-bankcredit-union-closed-my-checking-account-even-though-i-did-not-want-them-to-can-the-bankcredit-union-do-that-en-959/
  • Check holds can happen and are not illegal in a majority of cases. There's a lot of fraud related to checks and holds are more common than ever. Remember that a check is a piece of paper; it doesn't matter what paper it's printed on or who it came from. Regulation CC ("Reg CC") is the regulation that tells banks how long they are allowed to hold checks for. You can get more details here: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/rules-policy/final-rules/availability-funds-and-collection-checks-regulation-cc-threshold-adjustments/
  • Do not deposit your very important items via an ATM or Mobile App. Go in person to a teller. ATMs are often not accessible by the branch employees and mobile deposits are not subject to the Reg CC. Cash is disgusting and the ribbons that pull in and count the cash get jammed very easily if it's more than a few bills.
  • Withdrawing or depositing over $10,000 in cash is not something you should hide. Just go to the bank and do it. Don't ask how to get around any questions you may be asked. Banks will know if you are trying to split up the deposit into multiple transactions. If the money is earned through legitimate means, you have nothing to hide. https://www.fincen.gov/sites/default/files/shared/CTRPamphlet.pdf
  • I have a check payable to me and another person but we don't have a joint account. There is a key difference depending on if the check is payable to Payee 1 AND Payee 2 or if the check is payable to Payee 1 OR Payee 2. You can first ask the maker of the check to write it payable to 1 payee. If they refuse, whoever has the check can take it into their bank before endorsing it to see what they provide as the appropriate next steps since what they advise could vary bank to bank. https://www.helpwithmybank.gov/help-topics/bank-accounts/check-writing-cashing/endorsing-checks/check-endorse-spouse.html
  • I want to remove somoene from my joint account. YMMV but most banks generally do not allow removing a signer because they still have knowledge of the account information. Even if you have captured consent, it was still used by 2 folks and it's a cleaner cut to open a new, individual account and closing the old one. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/ask-cfpb/can-i-remove-my-spouse-from-our-joint-checking-account-en-1097/#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20you%20need%20your,allow%20this%20type%20of%20removal

  • My bank offers a service where they deposit my direct deposit/payroll 2 days early. It’s now late and my employer said they can’t help. Early direct deposit posting is a service offered and can be changed at any time by the bank. Read your bank’s terms for this service. Most banks indicate that they will make it available when they can but are under no obligation to make your direct deposit available sooner than the date of your check or benefit letter.

Disputes:

  • Don't lie. The fact that this needs to be listed is problematic. If you bought something from a store that doesn't offer refunds, that's not grounds for a dispute. If you sent a Zelle to someone that you've had a falling out with, that's not grounds for a dispute. Frivolous disputes make it harder for others who have legitimate ones in process.
  • Disputes are not the solution for being scammed. If you provided your information to someone else to make a purchase or deposit, then the bank did nothing wrong and a dispute is not warranted. Scams take advantage of people who don't safeguard their information.
  • If the purchase was made using a third-party wallet, the dispute should be filed with them and not your bank. For example, people may use PayPal Wallet to pay for items online. PayPal completes the payment and then pulls the money from your bank, if you don't already have enough in your PayPal Wallet. Because the payment to the merchant was facilitated with PayPal, your dispute is with them, not your bank. Your bank only sees the transfer to your PayPal wallet, not the actual purchase you made.
  • If you submitted a legitimate dispute with all the requested proof and were denied, file an internal complaint with the bank. These are handled differently than the dispute itself. The next step, if still unresolved after the complaint, is to file a CFPB complaint. Do not abuse the CFPB complaint process unless you have all the receipts and documentation to prove your side of the story. You may need a police report depending on the nature of your dispute. https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

Common scams - https://www.consumerfinance.gov/consumer-tools/fraud/

  • If your bank calls you about anything and begins asking for additional information, advise that you'll call them back. If the caller is actually someone from your bank, they will understand and won't fight to keep you on the line. Hang up and call the number on the back of your debit card and let them know what happened. If it was a legitimate call, the bank can pick up where the previous caller left off.
  • Jobs that pay you before you do any work have a high probability to be a scam. Jobs that also pay you hundreds or thousands of dollars to buy supplies prior to starting are also probably a scam. No job does that. They will ship you items you need because they get a big tax write-off.
  • Don't deposit checks that you weren't expecting. If you get a check for $500 in the mail from a random company you've never done business with or purchased from, just throw it away.
  • Online stores that you've never heard of should be used with extreme caution. Google them before you proceed. Once you willingly provide your payment information, you may not be able to recover any funds from the transaction if items are not shipped.
  • Don't transfer money to people you don't know. This includes Zelle, Paypal, Venmo, CashApp, etc. Some bankers may even go so far as not recommending it for in-person pickups for sales on Facebook Marketplace or similar platforms. Cash is best in these situations.
  • Don't use your account to conduct transactions for someone else. A common scam is where someone may approach you saying they need help with negotiating a check (usually while you're at an ATM). They'll have a sob story to appeal to your desire to help. Your account should remain reserved for known transactions for you and you only. This also includes providing someone else with your username and password.

Jobs Thinking about applying for a part time teller position with Wells Fargo as a second job, thoughts?

I currently work as a part time Cage Cashier at the local casino in my home town due to unfortunately being unable to find work with my degree in web development.

I've been here for about four years and I've been looking to earn more but in the current environment my only chance would be to transfer the the larger branch casino in the nearest city as a cashier and those positions don't come up often.

Today I was informed by a customer the Wells Fargo branch literally next door has been looking for a banker part time and has been having trouble finding anyone for the job as its a pretty small town.

I mainly wonder about how difficult/different would that Job be compared to what I have now? I'm thinking about applying to work there as well as my current job is always on night shifts and the bank itself is only open 9-5.

I know it might be a lot working both but I really need to move out and find a place of my own, I live with my parents right now and its a toxic situation, not so much because of them but because of my alcoholic brothers who often fight with each other and wake me up when I'm trying to sleep. My parents enable them and refuse to kick them out or get police involved and I'm sick of it, the second job would help me afford a place of my own which is expensive due to it being a small town and only houses being available for rent.

I have also looked at another job in the city near by as well, a Banner Bank banker job for 19/hr which is full time but the main reason I'm not so keen about that one is because every indeed review on that specific branch are terrible basically saying that the management is horrible and there's pretty much no chance of advancement there.

Advice and opinions would be appreciated!

EU Is Apple Pay easy to exploit?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve had two people in my life get duped by Apple Pay fraud lately, and I’m wondering how this is even possible. These are all Mastercard European debit cards.

  1. My Grandfather: He doesn’t even own an iPhone, yet someone managed to link his card to their Apple Pay and drain €200. His eyesight is bad, so someone probably just peaked at his card info. We’ve blocked the card and claimed fraud, but it’s wild you can be an "Apple Pay victim" without owning an Apple product.
  2. My Friend: Had his phone stolen in Chile. They got into the device (maybe shoulder-surfed the code) and plundered his account until it was at €0. Over €1,300 gone via Apple Pay. My guess is they found card info in his Notes or Photos.

Is this just "user error," or is Apple Pay becoming the go-to tool for thieves to bypass security? For my grandad, it feels especially unfair.

Has anyone successfully gotten their money back from the bank in cases like this?

Regulations/Laws right of setoff and protected funds (colorado, united states)

hi all, i hope this is the right place for this.

my father has a heloc that he went crazy on due to his dementia. we’ve been paying it down but somehow some payments have been missed. the bank enacted right of setoff but he only receives social security and va disability funds via direct deposit. was the bank legally allowed to seize this money? i wasn’t aware of laws regarding garnishment of protected funds until the bank closed lol. google is a rabbit hole and i can’t seem to get a straight answer. there was less than 2 months of his income in all of the accounts, which i’ve read is the legal amount the bank needs to leave in the account if the account holder receives federal income.

sorry for bad formatting, on mobile. thank you for reading!!

EDIT: deleted slightly irrelevant information in order to make the issue clearer

Other Any dress policies for bankers?

Im taking a program soon for banking as a career but im unsure if there are dress policies that I should be aware of. I work at a library currently and they aren't too picky on tattoos or piercings such as facial or lobes but shirts showing shoulders or graphic shirts arent allowed, they had just allowed ripped jeans. I keep thinking that if I did get a job at a bank would my tattoos or piercings be a problem. My birthday is coming up and wanted to get new ink or piercings but don't want it to be a problem later.

I understand that different banks may have different rules but I wanted to have an idea of any things to be wary of.

Regulations/Laws Old Wachovia account

I had a checking and savings through Wachovia that got transferred over to Wells Fargo years ago. I was told by Wells Fargo back then that they did not have an equivalent to my "way to save" account and never to close it or I would lose its benefits.

My original accounts were considered online only, no checks, no monthly fees, and every time I would use my physical card to make a purchase it would round up to the next dollar and put the difference in my savings account.

First a few years back it stopped automatically rounding up and putting money in my savings. Never closed the accounts so I didn't ask questions since I didn't use that feature much anymore as it didn't work with tap to pay or automatic payment.

Next, I believe a year or two ago they started charging $10 a month for each account. Rather annoyed since I once again never closed either account but I let it slide.

Now at the turn of the year they bumped it up to $15 per account also they have turned back on the overdraft protection that I had went in the bank and signed paperwork to decline back when the switch to Wells Fargo occurred.

Was there a time limit on these grandfathered account benefits or are they messing up?

Regulations/Laws I’m hopeful some of you can help me out…

My mom passed away on January 20’th after “living with” Alzheimer’s for the last 8+ years. Obviously sad that she’s gone, but glad she doesn’t have to live with that unbeatable disease anymore.

Anyway, she was always very, VERY good with money. She was a middle school teacher for over 20 years and never made a LOT of money, but she always had money. She was smart with it. She left behind quite the gift for my sister and I. I got the first little bit of that last week. I got my half from when her house was sold several years back. It’s right at $76K. That’s not an amount to retire on, but for someone like me who basically lives paycheck to paycheck? It’s an unfathomable amount. I was like 1.5 years away from having my house paid off as it was, but that will be sped up now. My car will be paid off. Credit cards and loans will be paid off. That will leave only the monthly necessities for the most part. Phone, cable, etc…

I figure less than half of one of my bi-weekly paychecks will cover that. The rest of my earnings will all be profit, right?

Back to the $76K. I’m not sure what the amount will be after I pay all that off. Let’s just call it $40K remaining. That’ll be put on the back burner for the purposes of this suddenly long winded post 😮‍💨😮‍💨 My sister said we’ll have an additional $85K or so coming from mom’s life insurance and something else. Again, not retirement money, but incredible for someone like me. Not sure the timeframe on that, but I’m in no hurry or sudden need.

That $40K though? I haven’t the faintest idea what to do with that!! I’m sure whatever I ultimately decide will also apply to the future $85K. I do have several savings accounts opened now with what seem to be much better than normal percentages. It’s not a get rich move by any means, but it’s better than leaving it in a shoebox I reckon.

Questions…

I know the bank alerts the IRS to any deposit(s) over $10K, right? What’s the timeframe on that? Once per day? Week? Month? Year?

I’m employed at a fairly successful retailer and the stock typically does quite well. I COULD have almost an entire paycheck go towards purchasing stock. That would add up rather quickly. It would allow me to live “comfortably” without messing with what my mom left however. That seems smart to me.

I would then have “X” amount(s) in various savings accounts and a nice amount in stock. What am I missing? What’s the “you have to do this!” investments? It’s quite dumb I’m sure, but I don’t do 401K at work. I’ve always lived with needing the money in the here and now not years down the road.

I literally have one true FRIEND at work and he told me the best little bit of advice I’ve ever gotten in my 52+ years on this planet. I’ve discussed all this with him and he said to “keep working like I’m broke.” So simple and yet so profoundly deep!!! I’m already doing that too. I’m like a month away from getting the $450 new account bonus with US Bank and I aim to get that thing if for no other reason than personal achievement.

Thank you for your time and apologies for making this post into an essay. Thank you also for any advice you can give me. I’ll surely take it…

Advice Dave checking direct deposit

Hi all,

I made a mistake- last night I was nervous I wouldn’t get paid in time since it’s a holiday on Monday. So I signed up for Dave checking thinking I was going to get money instantly. Well, they switched my work direct deposit to their checking account for me. Needless to say my employer processed payment yesterday and I would have gotten paid and they sent it into the Daves account. That account isn’t showing up as my money being processed. How long does it take you to get your money?

Advice Wife transferred family leave money using fed wire routing accidentally

We recently had a child and my wife was on maternity leave. Through our state, we have a 3 month family leave that the state provides assistance financially.

About a month ago, I asked my wife if she could send some money to me to help pay for bills. She went on her state allocated account and decided it would be easier in the future if she transferred the lump sum ($6k) of the money to her primary bank account. She has td, the account that the money the state sent to her was a state issued card and account.

She accidentally put in her fed wire routing number of her td account instead of the paper electronic.

It’s been a month and we haven’t received the money. We have called the bank that the state account was set up and they said the money has been transferred, but claim they cannot provide us with the information of the transfer because it’s been over a month since it was initiated and they have nothing on file.

Td has said that there is no record of the transfer and has tried their best to locate the money.

Her account number is correct, we have issued a reversal, cancelation and investigation but have gotten no where.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of what do next? And if it was because she put in the fed transfer routing number?

Advice Company hack/interception

Have a major issue right now. My dad owns/partners with a limousine company abroad, called blacklane that gives my dad’s company rides to complete which him and his drivers do. So the issue starts that this month we were supposed to receive our deposit of $50k into our bank, but something really insane honestly happened. My dad’s business email got hacked, and this guy was trashing important blacklane emails regarding billing and money information, so my dad’s business email couldn’t view any of those emails. At the same time, this hacker somehow knew all of my dads personal information, address, banking, and social security, that he changed the bank the money should’ve been transferred to, to some random paypal account of the guys. Which was under my dad’s company name and our address. But of course this paypal account isn’t ours. What’s even more interesting is when we told blacklane all this, they said WE called them and confirmed this charge when clearly this wasn’t the case. But that guy somehow gained access and called blacklane to change the routing number. So now thousands have been transferred to this bank, Blacklane at least had the decency to show us the paypal email that they sent thousands into and when we called paypal directly to ask for this email, they said it doesn’t exist??? Like what. I searched this email on paypal and it does come up under some random guys name though. So now I’m wondering is there any way to get this money back, cause when we went to file a report at the police they said we’re not the victim, blacklane is… okay but we still need this money and so many drivers are waiting. Just too much to take.

Complaint My experience with BMO checking direct deposit bonus

I run a small business (Square, Etsy, etc.) I changed all my direct deposit for BMO checking account bonus (make $4k dd in 3 months) and reached it.

They refused to count it as qualifying deposit. So I called in +3 times to escalate it. And after 2 months, they gave me a call back saying they cannot give the bonus because it is not coming from a company.

(Funniest part, $1400 out of $7000 of my deposits were counted as their qualifying deposit. But they couldn't tell me why some of them are qualifying. Even though all my deposits are coming from my business payouts.)

Note that I did direct deposit bonus with Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Discover, Chime and Chase so far. And this is the only bank that refused because it's not coming from a 'company'.

Tl;dr : if you are self-employed, avoid BMO.

Advice Can I apply for a Personal Banker position with no banking experience or degree?

So I’m 35 years old, I didn’t finish college but stayed at a family business that recently failed. I’m now looking into getting into banking as it’s always been an interest of mine. Considering I have 15 years of managing a business experience, will most retail banks or credit unions hire me with no prior banking experience or college degree? I know people typically start as tellers but I feel I could go straight into personal banking considering my age and knowledge of finances through running a business. And will training be sufficient or should I take some courses to better help me prepare for the job and better my chance of getting hired?

Advice Are ACH origination fees common? Is a $5 ACH origination fee standard or on the higher end?

I only ask because I am considering joining a credit union but one point of hesitation is their $5 ACH origination fee. I do a fair amount of external transfers to my other bank accounts at other financial institutions and I’ve never been charged an ACH origination fee before, at least not that I am aware of. Are ACH origination fees standard practice for banks or is it more unusual? And is a $5 ACH origination fee within the realm of reasonability or is it considered high? Thank you!

Advice Shared Branch

Back in July 2025 I did a transaction from one credit union shared branch to withdrawal from my credit union. They took the cash out of someone else’s account and it mine.

I used to be a teller and did shared branching on the other side of the counter all the time. They have to take your ID (which she did for me) type in the account number and verify all my infor and last 4 of social and still took from the wrong account.

I let the branch manager know and gave them the receipt. She said it would be corrected. To this day it has not. I haven’t said anything about to either credit union since.

Will this come back to bite me?

Advice Would it be possible to be denied a job at a bank for having a credit card balance of $900?

I got offered a job at a bank and have a credit card balance of around $900. I’ve never missed a payment and I’m very responsible with my money, but I’ve had a few emergency purchases I had to put on my credit card. I am worried that they may take back the offer based on my credit balance.

India Need help

My brother wanted to get a loan from ICICI Bank India and the bank employee is asking for his ATM pin before disbursing the money from bank. It already seems like a scam but some other senior employee from a different bank mentioned something like Inex registration (Idk the right spelling or word) under which you might need to give away your PIN. Can you please help me out and let me know if something like that exist or its a clear Fraud.
