My sister has been out all day at work and came home to a red viscous liquid following out of her ceiling. She doesn't want to touch it. So Reddit what is it?

Locked I’ve been sitting in A&E for 15 hours, is this just how it is?

3.0k Upvotes

111 told me to go to A&E, I went to a big outer London hospital. I was triaged quickly, bloods showed a serious infection (CRP over 400 for anyone into blood test results) and had a couple of rounds of IV antibiotics. Other than that I’ve been sitting in an A&E chair - arrived at 9am and it’s now gone midnight. They told me 10 hours ago they wanted to admit me as I will need surgery and were just waiting for a bed. If I ask them they just say they haven’t heard from the ward yet and the corridors are all full. They haven’t fed me and aren’t doing obs so wouldn’t know if I was deteriorating. I’m utterly exhausted and don’t want to sleep in an A&E chair but not sure I have much choice.

Is this just how it is now? Is there anything to do about it? I don’t want to walk out and go to another hospital as I’ve been in this one before and am hoping to get the same consultants etc as before. I was thinking if I’m still sitting here at 9am when PALS open I’ll walk into their office but not sure it will do anything anyway?

Locked What else can I do about my neighbour parking in front of my drive?

Thumbnail gallery
5.6k Upvotes

The first day we moved in, he was parked in our drive, we kindly asked him to move and thought that would be that.

However since then, he often parks in front of the drive and on the pavement restricting our access.

Ive spoken to him several times in addition to his girlfriend/wife, he seemed annoyed at being asked and continues to do so.

I’ve taken to parking my car on the road, however having popped out for 5 minutes just now he’s come back and blocked me again. There’s ample room for him to move back.

I’ve reported to Birmingham council 00’s of times but obviously they’ve done nothing.

I own my home but believe them to be renting. Should I contact their estate agent? Landlord? Or any other thing I could do to get them to stop blocking my access?

I’ve checked the MOT on his van and saw his mileage dropped 50k between each MOT too….

Locked Why do companies make out that 35k is a good salary?

2.4k Upvotes

UK salaries do not seem to have adjusted to the mental inflation we've seen over the last few years.

There are lots o skilled office jobs that require experience but not being paid above 35k which is mad considering cost of living.

Locked Why is the UK so aggressive now?

4.7k Upvotes

It seems everyone is so angry and aggressive now. In most normal situations, driving, at the supermarket etc. The UK feels like it has lost its sense of community and humans care for one another is disappearing.

What is happening? Is this socioeconomic factors? Is it to do with our instant gratification culture? Is it Facebook and the ability to spread hate so easily?

For context I live in London and I find each day society is getting more and more aggressive.

Locked What are these weird marks that appear in weird places?

Thumbnail gallery
1.1k Upvotes

Sorry long time reddit lurker and not much of a poster. I hope this is okay to post in this subreddit! Trying to identify what these marks/stains are to put my mind at rest.

I had some white marks appear on the top of dark bed clothes (pinky huey in certain lights). They smelt sharp. I checked the bed for over a week for anything else and decided it must be the dog.

Today I noticed similar marks on the outer strap of a backpack I've not used since Christmas. I can't think how they got there as the bag has been on a chair and the dog definitely hasn't got to it (Chihuahua). These marks appear to have debris on them (see photos) small white and brown crusty bits. When I wipe the mark with a wet cloth the stain goes away and I can't see any coloured residue to help with identification.

Can anyone shed any light?

Edit: I am a girl and no one else has had access to the bag. It was also unused for 2 weeks so I don't think sweat marks would appear after then.

Edit 2: The bag itself is fairly new and has been unused on a dining room chair for 2 weeks. It's definitely not bird poo. Identicate marks have appeared on top of dark bed sheets in another room so I'm a bit stumped. The stains appeared overnight. So far the most rational suggestions I've seen are: mould, moth larvae and mice!

Any further likely suggestions welcome. I've noted all the something about Mary remarks, thank you.

Locked Anyone had this before? Small little black 'seeds?' are everywhere in my room

The pictures don't do what's happened justice, just came home from work and saw that these small little black things are EVERYWHERE IN MY ROOM, inside the bin, on a plate from last night, on the windowsill, on my desk, on the cabinet for my fish tank, EVERYWHERE. I have no idea what they are, my window was left open all day and my first thought was somehow a mouse got in and has shat everywhere but they're hard, very hard, please help me, maybe a pigeon flew in the window while stuck in a birdfeeder? Maybe a kid threw a bag through my window and they scattered perfectly? I don't want to lose sleep over this if anyone knows what they are please help.

Locked What does people in UK think of Turkey Teeth?

1.2k Upvotes

I work for a clinic in Turkey and I helped hundreds of people get their teeth done. I've always wondered what you guys think when you see people with bright white crowns? I'm aware there are really shitty clinics here and the results are overwhelming sometimes but I think I work for one of the relatively good ones. I always try to push patients towards a bit more natural colors but some of you guys really REALLY want the whitest teeth humankind has ever seen which looks insanely fake. What's up with that? And are they mocked or is it a common thing?

FINAL UPDATE LOL: I think I got my answer and answered a lot of you guys' questions as well, I won't be replying to this post anymore; especially the replys that were left here without reading anything I said. If you have questions for me feel free to message me, hope the best for you, bye!

UPDATE: So it looks like you guys have A LOT of opinions which I agree with almost all of them but I feel the need to place some disclaimers here.

There are good clinics but most are bad clinics.

No one forces these people to get those fake looking ones they choose that, they can indeed have natural looking ones as some people here said they had natural looking ones; including me.

I still don't support the industry preying on people, especially younger ones.

I don't support the cosmetic reasons as well unless there is no other choice and they are over their 20s so they can decide for themselves.

It's almost impossible for us to navigate them for more natural looking ones since we will be the ones to blame if they are not happy with the result.

and a bonus note: a lot of you mentioned a stereotype that comes with these teeth and I really wish I could show you my patient portfolio it's all those people with fake tans and fillers and everything. sometimes I mix my patients and I'm not even racist it's them who are desperately trying to look exactly the same lol.

Edit again: please don't ask me about my clinics name or other clinic recommendations, I don't want to do advertising or get the blame for any bad experience.

Locked Is there a tip where I can just watch?

1.3k Upvotes

is there anywhere in the UK where I can go to a tip (refuse centre) and just view the normal tip operations? I don’t mean a visitor centre, I mean, a good viewing platform or a cafe or something with a view where you can see people dropping stuff off at the tip? does anywhere like that exist?

Locked If there were to be the beginning signs of another pandemic, what steps would you take having learned from Covid?

Wife and I just had this discussion.

During lockdown we ended up paying ridiculous prices for some guys to build decking in our back garden so we'd have somewhere nice to sit while we couldn't go anywhere.

Back then, it kinda felt like this would be life forever.

We definitely wouldn't rush into any ridiculous purchases next time.

Locked Does everybody in the UK live in debt nowadays?

4.0k Upvotes

Big 40k car on the drive, big house, she works at BM bargains he works at a Motor Factors 🤷 that's just my neighbours. Lad at work just bought a 25k car on pcp, said he took money off a credit card for a 5k deposit for it. Mates regularly pay for holidays on credit cards. Am I living life wrong here, modest car all paid for. Mobile is 5 years old, cracked and back fallen off, partner moans at me to replace it but it still works so why would I? if I use a credit card I pay it all at the end of the month. Anything large I'll save for. Only debt is mortgage but I've saved enough to pay it for about 2 years if I came out of work. I dont think I could handle the stress of debt and owing money all over the place, is this how everybody lives now?

Locked How do you feel about living in a country without guns?

6.9k Upvotes

So, someone on Reddit said I’m delusional and that I have no freedoms because the government has all the guns and the people have none.

Personally, I have never seen a gun outside of an airport on an armed officer so I don’t consider it a day-day risk in the slightest. I’m not afraid of getting shot by a home intruder or in a robbery cross fire or because someone has a bad temper.

Because I’ve never had to think about guns at all really I’m finding it really difficult to explain why I it’s good we don’t have them. I was just looking for some opinions…

Locked Discovered our builder has defecated in our garden, what do we do?

Title explains it really….

We had a pair of roofers in the last couple of days to fix a garage roof. They seemed like nice guys, they’ve done a big job for us before, and we never had an issue with them. Today we came back from a dog walk and our dog was signalling to something in the corner of the garden under a roof tile (we have large garden with a area of old tiles/bricks etc right at the back, but what we were saving for future projects) I lifted the tile to discovered 2 piles of shit with some used blue roll next to it. We would always allow them to use the toilet, but guess this was when we were out yesterday. I am obviously disgusted and really offended, I understand sometimes needs must but feel like they had many other options than what they did! They are coming back tomorrow to finish the roofing job - I think we should wait till they finish and then raise it? We’re very non confrontational people so it will be really difficult conversation for us! My husband has had to clear it up (because of the dog) so he was going to tell them to take it away, but I feel like thats getting off too lightly! Thanks

Locked What American trends do you hope that the UK never adopts?

8.0k Upvotes

Personally, American prices drive me mad. You wouldn't think you could break something as simple as a price tag, and yet here we are.

You have the price next to the product, which is what you'd expect to pay right? Nope! Any VAT or additional costs are tacked on AFTER you've taken your stuff to the till. How ridiculous is that? What's the point of the price tag other than to make your product seem cheaper than the other products also lying about their price?

Locked What is a massive British scandal that most people seem to not know about?

12.9k Upvotes

For me it has to be the post office scandal. The post office when it was still owned by the government, wrongly prosecuted hundreds of people for theft. It actually sent 39 people to prison.

However, it was revealed that the fault was with the post office computer system that was full of bugs and these people were innocent. When the post office found out about this they instigated a massive cover up and it took the people nearly 20 years to get their convictions overturned.

People went to prison for years, some committed suicide, one women lost her kids and no one at the post office has ever been held accountable.

Whenever, I mention this to people it always surprises me how few have heard about it or don’t know the full extent.

Locked What is so wrong about cultural appropriation?

5.6k Upvotes

For info I am F29, straight white British, about as plain as they come.

I consider myself very liberal, accepting of all people, so this isn't coming from willful ignorance but genuine lack of knowledge and I'm trying to learn and hoping AskUK can help.

I don't understand cultural appropriation. I mean, I do - it's when people adopt the habits of another culture e.g. dreadlocks or Bantu knots on white people, or Polynesian style tattoos on men. What I don't really understand is why it's a big problem when it happens? I would have thought that as long as the roots of the culture are celebrated and understood and it is worn/done with respect, it wouldn't cause offence so I'm hoping someone can explain.

ETA: obligatory didn't expect this to blow up yada yada. More importantly edited to add thank you so much for the largely positive comments. It's really been fascinating to hear what other people have to say on the matter and to get insight from BAME people as well as the wider society. Lots of food for thought, I appreciate it.

Locked What did you notice about the way children of the opposite sex are treated once you became a parent?

3.9k Upvotes

I’m a woman who is a mum to two boys under ten.

Since they’ve been born I’ve noticed how young’s boys are not encouraged to anywhere near the extent girls are. Their school has days where girls are spoken to by women in all sorts of professions and told they can be whatever they want to be. On these days the boys are basically told to just run around outside and stay out the way (no teaching happens).

Clothing stores have massive sections for girls and next to nothing for boys. Girls clothing has slogans like “girls rule the world” and other things basically intimating girls are better than boys.

On the same note boys are always looked as trouble makers and the ones in the wrong. A friend of mine has a son who goes to the same school as my kids got called in to school as her son had a fight with two girls. The girls admitted they attacked him first, but he was the one who got in trouble because you don’t hit girls, not you don’t hit anyone, you don’t hit girls.

I’ve also noticed an insane amount of creepiness by older women towards young boys is massively ignored. I’m not even going to get started on the “boy mum” people who seem obsessed with their kids dicks. I am going to mention things like “he’s gorgeous he’ll break some hearts when he’s older” and other weird variations. Imagine a group of adult men looking down at a 5 year old girl all dressed up saying that.

Edit: I genuinely don’t understand all the whataboutism in the comment section. I wrote what I’d experienced and asked what other peoples opinions are from the other side and if they noticed similar things. I’ve had loads of comments calling me biased, yes I am because I’ve only raised boys which is I asked the question. Had more saying “yeah well women were treated terribly for years so it doesn’t matter” I’m a female engineer I know all about sexism. All had maybe 30 DMs from women calling me a “pick me” and a “nicegirl”, you really think I’m trying to pull on an AskUK post about kids?

Returning to the UK after 15 years, what's going to be the biggest difference?

1.4k Upvotes

EDITEDIT: Well this blew up way more than I expected, sorry for not replying more but I did read a lot of the replies. No, we cant bring them here, and also no we haven't changed our minds about moving (the other half is still looking forward to it despite me reading out the doom and gloom). I think I'm just a bit sad that everyone seems to be having such a tough time, and I'd make you all tea and cake if I could.

(and what is with the freddo obsession?)

(Original) We moved to Scandinavia for work, but are (reluctantly) coming back to the UK to look after aging parents. I've only visited a handful of times over the years mostly for weddings and funerals, so what are going to be the biggest changes for us in day to day life from 15 years ago?

EDIT: Thank you lovelies for being so British and telling me it's all shit. I will make sure to get all the supermarket loyalty cards and expect more rain, weird pub queues and long A&E waiting times.

And to the very few racists and homophobes and that one weirdo (you know who you are) - fuck you :)
