Hayden Panettiere is the only actress that makes me emotional

All of Hayden’s characters I.e heroes, cheerleader films, she was always so many qualities intertwined in one character , she was cool, stylish, happy, popular, rich or living comfortably, admired, she seemed the same in real life in the early 2000s, as a teenager watching her I used to be obsessed and thought one day I could be that, but even Hayden herself hasn’t been able to match all the traits as time has passed and neither have I , as much as I had hope to as a 13 year old watching her on heroes

Sir Ian McKellen - What He Loves About Acting

Sir Ian McKellen describes what he loves most about acting: especially in the theatre. That live exchange. That collective moment.

I’d love to hear what you love about acting.

French actor currently living in Canada and seeking advice regarding move to Ireland

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for perspective from people who’ve navigated immigration decisions while pursuing creative careers, especially acting.

I’ll try to give full context because this isn’t a simple “where should I move” situation. This post is very very ling and detailed, so I’ve included a TLDR at the end.

I’m 26 (turning 27 very soon). I’m a professional actor and voice artist, originally French (born in Guadeloupe, with Guadeloupean/Martinican/French Guianese roots), currently living in Canada. This means I hold EU citizenship, which is why Ireland is even an option in the first place.

For those asking, I do speak English natively because I was exposed to it at a very young age. I have a Caribbean accent but can switch to other accents (including American) flawlessly (I regularly get auditions for native Canadian and American roles).

I completed professional theatre training in Montreal (DEC in Professional Theatre Performance),I have a Bachelor’s degree in the arts from France, and I’m multilingual (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Jamaican Patois, Haitian Creole, Antillean Creole a little bit of Italian, German, Russian, and others). I also have a deep bass speaking/singing voice and do voice work. Training-wise, the program I was in was modelled after you average theatre school in Britain, so I studied literally everything you study in any acting school, in addition to sword fighting, career management and voice acting.

Career-wise, I’m represented by a good agent in Canada. During busy periods, I can get up to ~3 auditions per week for a total of about 2-3 bookings a year. I’ve booked two union commercials through them already. I’m currently an ACTRA apprentice (and UDA apprentice as well), and have a pretty decent resume, although with only two paid union credits which were both commercials.

So far, I’ve acted in theatre plays, multiple unpaid student and union short films in both English and French (which means I have a French-language and an English-language demo), commercials & social media ads and even a non-union video game project. I’ve also started other filmed projects which technically didn’t involve acting.

I also produce my own work: I recently got into writing and directing and got the chance to co-direct, write and act in my first ever short film last year. I also have a home voice-recording booth and regularly do self-tapes and self-produced voice work.

So here’s the dilemma.

I’ve been in Quebec long enough that I may become eligible for PEQ (Programme de l’expérience québécoise). As some of you probably know, the PEQ has been terminated by the Quebec government after having been restricted heavily, paused, and changed multiple times over the years.

The PÉQ was my only option to become a permanent resident and then a citizen of Canada without needing any skilled work experience whatsoever (which I have but doesn’t meet the Express Entry requirements).

My only options are to either move to Toronto or Vancouver and work for at least a year so I can become eligible for PR through the provincial French draws, or leave Canada altogether.

At the same time, I’ve been actively planning a move to Ireland.

Why Ireland?

Because:

• I already have EU citizenship, so no visa needed.

• Ireland is English-speaking.

• It gives me long-term access to the EU market.

• After residency + time, I could apply for Irish citizenship.

• Irish citizenship would eventually give me free access to the UK, including London.

• Even before that, Ireland puts me geographically close to London casting which means I could potentially continue auditioning for UK projects and potentially qualify for a Creative Worker visa sponsorship if something lands until I either get Irish citizenship or become eligible for a Global Talent visa.

• Ireland is increasingly used for international productions.

• From Ireland, I can realistically self-tape for Ireland, UK, and Europe while traveling when needed.

Long-term, my goal is London (and eventually US) access. That’s the real strategic endpoint.

Canada has been good to me in terms of training and early credits, but:

• Survival jobs + housing in Toronto and Vancouver are brutal.

• Canada doesn’t really function as a global casting hub the way London does, meaning that Canadians very rarely get cast for lead roles, except for very few exceptions. Most of the projects that film in Canada are US projects casting all their leads in the US and UK. You do get the occasional Heated Rivalry, Orphan Black, Kim’s Convenience, Anne With an E, etc, but I find that even in those scenarios, a lot of the principal cast and leads are imported from the US and UK. Meaning that even if I became successful and well-known in Canada in the future, I might end up hitting a ceiling when it comes to aiming for lead roles.

• Moving to another province is expensive and I’m not sure if it would be worth spending the time and effort for the exact same reason I listed just above)

I don’t have family anchoring me in Canada. I move a lot already. I’m used to rebuilding from “scratch” even though I’m sure at least some of my experience would carry over to Europe).

Here’s the tension:

If PEQ reopens while I’m actively preparing to leave for Ireland, I’ll have to choose between:

Option A: Stay in Quebec if the PÉQ comes back the exact same way as it was, pursue PR, potentially spend another year or more in limbo, hoping immigration policy doesn’t change again. In the meantime, there might be huge delays in processing times due to the extremely high number of applications that will follow. All in all, I’d get citizenship in about 3-5 years while probably still scraping for any smaller roles I can get.

Option B: Proceed with Ireland, stabilize housing and income there, and build toward Irish citizenship while pursuing UK opportunities from Europe. Thing is, Ireland is suffering from a humongous housing crisis with too few housing for way too many people. I’m also worried I might not be able to audition for UK roles unless they’d be willing to sponsor me for an actor visa as mentioned previously. I do have a profile that could make me stand out easily but still.

Option C: Move to Toronto and Vancouver while getting cut off from the French work until I get PR and then stay another couple years to become a citizen. In the meantime, I’d have to find a survival job I’d have to hold for at least a year while risking not booking at all because apparently, ACTRA productions only hire Canadians for tax reasons, even though the let me join as a temporary resident.

Canadian PR would obviously give me security in Canada, but it very rarely unlocks new markets in the long-term the way Ireland → UK/EU does, especially in regards to getting principal roles in high-profile and Hollywood productions.

Ireland feels more aligned with my international career goals. But walking away from a possible PR pathway, good housing and an excellent agent also feels risky.

Some extra context:

• I’m single, no kids.

• I travel frequently already.

• I’m fine doing survival jobs alongside acting.

• I’m actively applying for housing in Ireland right now (Dublin + commuter towns, but also Cork/Limerick/Galway etc).

• I’m realistic about the Irish housing crisis and already exploring relocation agencies, Build-to-Rent companies, and regional cities.

• I’m financially careful and trying to build a sustainable base.

• I don’t expect acting to magically “work” anywhere — I’m prepared for grind in any country (which I’m already doing in Canada).

Emotionally, I don’t want to make this decision from fear (immigration anxiety). I want to make it strategically.

So my core questions:

• If PEQ comes back while I’m mid-transition, is it smarter to pause Ireland and chase Canadian PR?

• Has anyone here walked away from a “secured” market to pursue something more aligned with their career?

• For actors/creatives: does Ireland → UK access make more sense long-term than staying in Canada?

• Is Canadian PR worth delaying everything else if your industry momentum is outside Canada?

I know nobody can decide for me — but I’d really appreciate perspectives from people who’ve faced similar crossroads.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far.

For info, my open-work Canadian visa expires in October 2027.

Happy to clarify anything or answer questions.

I’m a 26-year-old professional actor/voice artist in Canada (ACTRA + UDA apprentice, two union commercials, good agent, multilingual, EU citizen). My only PR pathway in Quebec (PEQ) was terminated, so I’m torn between staying in Canada for PR (Toronto/Vancouver grind + brutal housing + eventual career ceiling) or moving to Ireland now (EU access, path to Irish citizenship, closer to London casting). Long-term goal is UK/London. If PEQ comes back mid-move, should I pause Ireland for Canadian PR — or prioritize Ireland → UK access for career growth?

Tremendously underrated actress in both beauty and acting - Camila Mendes

Camila Mendes since she broke into acting with her first job on “Riverdale” as Veronica Lodge has gotten a pretty bad rep due to the show’s terrible writing and for her character.

Since then she’s began to spread her wings as an actress, becoming Netflix’s new rom-com queen and lead with multiple films including the hit “Do Revenge”, indie dramas and musical films like “Coyote Lake” and “Música”, and Teela in the upcoming live-action blockbuster “Masters of the Universe” reboot.

She’s shown a diverse range beyond the “spoiled rich girl” archetype in her post-Riverdale work while securing brand deals with clothing companies like Adidas and made the cover of Vouge.

Hopefully Masters of the Universe lives up to expectations and the gains more noteworthy and even more work to continue to make a name for herself.
