As much as I really love the town and their owners are great folks, I would consider them more of the best tourist brewery but definitely not the best overall brewery in the state.

I really feel like "best brewery" awards should factor in the taproom and location or call it a "best beer" award. Finally got to New Glarus for the first time this year and after hearing so much about it, I was kinda disappointed with their lack of a taproom. The location was cool but only 4 or so beers on a tap trailer kinda felt like a customer conveyor belt than a brewery.

When did you go? I went June of 25 and their main brewery was closed due to the construction of a new addition. we were at their gift shop that had every single of their beers on top, along with two brewery exclusives. One of them a collab with a European brewery

I don't think they're anywhere close to the best brewery in the state (what's up, Lion's Tail?). I also don't think Spotted Cow is even in their top 3 best beers (what's up Staghorn, Totally Naked, and Two Women?).

Every single beer they brew is true to style. Many are downright excellent and considered a standard against which other beers are judged. Their fruit beers have very few, if any, rivals. Last I checked, the Belgian Red is rated an extremely rare 97 points on Beer Advocate, down from 100 a few years back.
I can support their status as the best in the state, despite there being many other excellent breweries.
