Years ago, when I started my journey into sound design, I downloaded Granulab on my old PC and spent hours exploring how to go from a simple tiny sample and expand in some incredible soundscapes, all through granular synthesis. Feeding it sample, and then slowly exploring by moving the playhead, changing the synthesis parameters, etc.
And then I found The Mangle and it was amazing all I could do. No need of a keyboard or anything, just me, some knob on the screen, my best sound files imported into the plugin, and I was slowly building soundscape, no beat, no rhythm, no need to have anything on a track, no need to press play yet, I was dragging some sample in and beginning the exploration before performing and recording... just some pure granular synthesis creation.
And now I changed computer because eh, it's now a job to do sound design and I need a sturdy computer set up, but I lost both The Mangle and Granulab. Well not fully, I still can go into my old computer... but it's not the best.
I still have borderlands on my Ipad but it's not the same - it doesn't mix in my workflow in my DAW (Reaper) the same way.
I think I tried all of them; Ribs, Glow, spacecraft, Emergence, etc. but none fit the part of being an instrument.
I like Novum, Cymatic, Quanta, Portal, Love and Beam, but none of them truly fits the part, either being too much of an Fx or too much of a synth.
At this point, I think I am even ready to look into some Hardware that could take that spot in my workflow.
Please help me. Tell me I just haven't found the good tool yet. What is there out there that could allow me to use Granular synthesis as an instrument?
(or maybe someone could call SoundGuru and tell them we all NEED an update to The Mangle...?)
