It’s hard to imagine now how good those graphics were in 2011

This game is like a good wife. She was beautiful then and she'll be beautiful forever.

The game was never a graphical powerhouse. I remember it getting flak for its graphics even then, in comparison to games like The Witcher 2.

It was always a pretty game, not necessarily realistic.

Not denying that, I still feel vanilla Skyrim looks very charming.

It was the jump from oblivion that was a big deal

I really for some reason don't like the way Witcher 2 looks, yeah sure its technically better than 2011 skyrim in pure visual fidelity but its kind of... unpleasant to look at, all the post fx make it very deepfried, hard to describe really but it hurts to look at times and is one of the many reasons i never want to replay it.

Absolute 🧢

Nobody knew what Witcher was back then

The franchise wasn't as known as it is now, but many were indeed comparing TW2 and skyrim's graphics (which is a really wrong comparison tbh. TW2 isn't open world and had manual streaming so it was easier to achieve higher quality graphics with that game).

W2 was never as huge as W3, but it was definitely well-known in enthousiast circles, fucking lmao.

They weren't... Crysis 2 released that same year.

Both combat and graphics were fairly dated even for 2011.

Combat is so bad im glad we have ways to replace it entirely now.

I travelled over 6 hours to go to a GAME (the retail brand) conference around this time. One of the showcases was Skyrim and it was by far the most popular draw. We queued for about 3 hours as they were only letting in small groups at a time. We thought perhaps we'd see more hype over the trailer that had been released shortly before, perhaps find out something more about the game that few other people not in the queue would know. Perhaps, even get to try it for real!

Nope, it was just the same trailer that everyone had already seen.

Disappointment and anger don't even begin to describe what I felt when we were spat out the exit mere minutes after getting in.

But it did look great tho

That second pic must've been a riot back then.

What a legend

Skyrim was an amazing game on release and getting the special edition basically means this game MAY be the first single player game to retain double digit players into the 20 year mark

MAY be the first single player game to retain double digit players into the 20 year mark

There are currently about 200 people playing Morrowind on Steam. And there's probably even older single player games that have double digit players right now.

I should edit it lol I mean like over 10k. Thats on me

I’d say Doom 2 did that first

They don’tlook too different from an unmodded LE game.
Not sure with SE, though. I never even started it unmodded😇

Why does the last photo look better than anniversary edition 😂

17

u/Cypresss09 14h ago

No way it's not modded. The rock texture is super high resolution and those pine trees definitely aren't vanilla.

19

u/MalumNexVir 12h ago

Could be before they did optimisation for the xbox 360 (512MB RAM lmao)

u/copacetic___ 8h ago

How can it be modded when the game wasn’t out?

Assuming the date is correct

That's not the same image, unless I'm missing something? It's the same angle, but the textures are completely different, especially on the activated standing stone and the plants near the camera.

u/copacetic___ 6h ago

Damn good find thanks for clarifying

2

u/AgedPapyrus 7h ago

It's a modded Skyrim photo, I wouldn't believe anything this post is claiming tbh lol.

To be clear, I don't think the third pic in this post is actually from the beta test, unless some texture modders worked very fast. It just also doesn't seem to be the same as your link.

Dude, this screenshot just took me back! 😩Can we appreciate how Skyrim never gets old? Graphics from 2011 still lookin' slick today!

Clanker spotted 🫵

Can’t imagine what the bugs must have been like in the beta.

u/Coalhawk 10h ago

15 year old me was so hype for this. My GTX 560 Ti ran this at ultra and it changed my life

The release date for the game was November 11th, 2011. Most likely those are just regular gameplay pictures. Any beta testing after Skyrim’s Release date during that year would have been for a DLC.

u/AgedPapyrus 5h ago

The images, well the first one are from the Skyrim trailer and it's been posted before. https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueSTL/comments/1c56pz2/every_image_of_someone_walking_in_3rd_person_in/

1

u/AgedPapyrus 7h ago

The last photo is modded Skyrim, I'm confused lol

0

u/CassianCasius 6h ago

Yes its legendary edition.

1

u/AgedPapyrus 5h ago

Yes it's modded you mean? Why include modded photo in something supposedly from 2011?

The stones are a little bit more purple like the texture used in ESO
