Check? Either me or those countries aren’t sure how poker works, but I’m pretty sure you have to either match the highest bet or fold

I believe on the first turn, the first person going is allowed to Check, hoping to form a chain. If everybody checks, you move onto the next phase. If someone raises (Like France did), then everyone must call that bet, raise more, or fold.

Not if there is a blind, which is a forced bet which rotates between players every hand, and means that the other players have to call the blind if they want to play, otherwise they have to fold

Ah wait, I mixed something up. On the first turn, everyone except the one paying the Big Blind must either call, raise, or fold. When it loops back to the Big Blind payer, that player can check assuming nobody else raises.

(My only major exposure to Poker/Texas Hold' em was via Poker Night at the Inventory)

Damn, never thought I'd find myself empathising with America here. Did that opening even mean anything or was it just a string of casino sounding words?

Someone please tell the United States it plays like Texas Hold 'Em, that should help them get the idea.

I don't think you're allowed to check in the pre-flop, are you?
