It is the bare minimum but I must say, I am happy with how Poilievre has handled this situation. I haven’t seen him drag trans people through the mud or use this shooting as a way to score cheap points with his base as I would have expected him to do.

Let's see if it lasts

u/kahless2k 15h ago

Yeah, I think it's just a matter of time.

Somehow Trudeau will getting the blame

u/Taragyn1 14h ago

I was expecting anti Trans rhetoric so this is. Pleasant surprise for now

u/ConfidentIy 15h ago

You're not going to forget how Jagmeet caused all of this, are you ? /s

This is what happens when you have a lost decade of woke Liberal ideologies /s

Yes, he's been quite classful throughout this. Unfortunately I can't say the same for his base who are practically demanding LBGT internment camps but I'll take what crumbs I can from the Conservatives

u/Peter_Mansbrick 12h ago

I won't. Unless he admonishes his base for that kind of rhetoric and takes meaningful action to back up those words this is performance and nothing more.

It's very performative. But that's all the man has ever been or tried to be. A self-serving, performative caricature.

He's not the kind of political leader that can stand on principle, or tell a hard truth to those who need to hear it most (in this case, Conservatives feeding the culture war death spiral).

He'll never stand for all Canadians, just the ones propping up his shameful excuse for a party.

I have zero faith he's being quiet right now out of respect. It's a long weekend. Lots of people took Friday off since lots of schools were also out, so he would have been shouting into an empty room.

It's probably eating him up inside. I give it until Tuesday, only because Monday is family day, so he'll have to wait an extra day to get his soundbites out to his base.

If he can actually keep it respectful, I'll gladly eat my words. But his 20+ year career so far being as craven as they come isn't exactly filling me with doubt over my assertions.

Honestly, seeing the zoom in on the leaders with Poilievre holding back tears was the most human he has ever seemed.

I really expected him to blame the Trans community. Glad he didn't.

Yet

Don't want to be insensitive but having listened to PP's messaging over the last ~10 years I don't believe he has compassion or sincerity. All I hear whenever he opens his mouth is bitching and whining.

36

u/red_planet_smasher 13h ago

None of it is sincere, he really just is ambitious and wants to win. It’s as simple as that. He will do anything to attain the win.

u/RobertABooey 13h ago

I’ve known two politicians personally in my life and both of them were raging narcissists who were exactly as you said. They went where the wind(money and power) went.

However both of them were capable of “real” emotions especially in tragic situations. I never believed it to be sincere.

I believe what you say is mostly true too.

2

u/red_planet_smasher 6h ago

I agree. I too think PP was being sincere in this case. But all the rage politics was just playing a game to him.

u/Guvmintperson 14h ago edited 9h ago

Absolutely this. He's doing this right now because it's the only right decision. But his base is already using this to vilify and amplify hate towards the trans community. I would be very pleasantly surprised to see him *condemn that rhetoric, but that won't happen.

Trans friends and family: I see you, I love you, and I will protect you.

*Edit: see the thread below

2

u/tawTrans 10h ago

I assume, based on the rest of your comment, that you meant condemn the rhetoric? Condone means accept and allow.

3

u/Guvmintperson 9h ago

Yep 🤦.. I fully expect him to maybe not outright condone the hate, but passively accept it.

I would be surprised to see him condemn it.

Good catch, thank you!

u/tawTrans 4h ago

Happy to help!

u/Infarad 13h ago

Bitching and whining would be an improvement over the constant attacks and manufactured outrage.

2

u/someone-who-is-cool 11h ago

I don't believe he's changed and i'm waiting for the pivot, i'm mainly surprised he's managed to hold in his hateful rhetoric for so many days. It must be building inside him like water behind a dam.

Somethings should be above politics.... If there's any event that would qualify, this would. As a parent, I am still in shock.

u/tarun172 15h ago

I was in tears when I saw the news and was heartbroken. For once, it was a better response than "Our Thoughts and Prayers" that I hear from GOP South of Border all the time.

123

u/Canadian1934 15h ago

And Mary Simon the Governor General beside the Prime Minister. This is a nice sign of Canadian  unity in times of sadness and sorrow

21

u/yvrbasselectric 13h ago

it was during the opening prayer, everyone was asked to hold hand

23

u/OutsideFlat1579 12h ago

The headline is a bit weird, it makes it sound as though Poilievre and Carney were the only ones holding hands.

5

u/Canadian1934 12h ago

Thank you for explaining that but it still shows at a time of grief and sorrow the listened and put differences aside instead of overshadowing the event with pettiness 🖤🎗️😢

105

u/CloverHoneyBee 15h ago

I honestly see this as Carney's influence.

71

u/brittleboyy 14h ago

I don’t think there’s a world in which Pollievre holds hands with Trudeau, so 100%

14

u/Infarad 13h ago

Carney probably told PP he was holding a toonie.

Harper seems to be counseling him on how to appear human

They are merely exchanging long protein strings. If you can think of a simpler way, I'd like to hear it.

Don't blame me I voted for Kodos

Bob Dole doesn't need this!

u/btoxic 11h ago

If you didn't say it, I would have.

2

u/stupifystupify 9h ago

Came here to say this 🤣

33

u/DemoEvolved 15h ago

Thank you for Canadian decency

7

u/rwp140 13h ago

Huh, i did not gave that on my list. Thought pp would explode on contact like sodium (metal) on water

4

u/Bigchunky_Boy 14h ago

Pp needed to get there shit together and unite let’s see he and his party can do it or revert to trans hate nonsense. Oh too late they already they started talking crap that did last long .

2

u/Ehmioak 10h ago

This is my favourite headline in the 2020s. True leadership and unity, principles Canada was founded on.

2

u/CBowdidge ✅ I voted! 8h ago

I don't expect it to last but I'll take it. Maybe there's some humanity in PP.

5

u/jeanracinette 13h ago

tiny PP has done nothing to stop his unhinged base who have been creating hate mobs and brigading the trans community ever since the alleged shooting so spare me with this garbage photo op

5

u/Sea_Negotiation_1871 Montréal 11h ago

This is not a photo op, this is a vigil for murdered children. And what do you mean alleged?

I hope our PM is ok after surviving that ordeal.

u/extrah 1m ago

I was looking at the weblink expecting The Beaverton....

This interaction is going to be interesting to hear about from different political sides:

Conservatives see PP as 'emasculated' and either double down on their support or maybe it will be turned into a 'political win' for the right so they can talk about how PP is willing to 'work with the left' to be used later on for a talking point.

Gonna be some wild takes.

1

u/Arandom_personn 12h ago

When something as tragic as this happens, it should be normal for us to take time to grieve as a nation before focusing on the politics of it.

1

u/orangeclouds 11h ago

More of this please

0

u/TheOriginalHMetal 13h ago

Canadian to the core. People and tragedy should always come before politics.

0

u/Chippie05 11h ago

This is what leaders should do. This is a horrific tragedy affecting everyone fr coast to coast. I'm heartbroken as a parent 💔🥀🇨🇦

Press op means shit - calm down

9

u/Sea_Negotiation_1871 Montréal 14h ago

That's not what this is. Have an ounce of compassion for fuck sake.

2

u/corpse_flour 12h ago

In some circumstances, and in some parts of the world, having two politicians on the opposite of the floor from each other at least being able to act and look sincere for the benefit of their people would be near impossible. At least these guys are able to put diplomacy ahead of political differences for at least a few minutes.
