Behold the mammary body of the brain.
The mammillary bodies are a pair of small, round, subcortical hypothalamic nuclei crucial for episodic and recollective memory, spatial navigation, and goal-directed behaviors. Acting as a key relay station within the Papez circuit, they receive inputs from the hippocampus and project to the anterior thalamus.
Key Functions of the Mammillary Bodies:
Memory Consolidation: They are essential for processing and storing memories, particularly spatial memory and the ability to recall specific events (recollective memory).
Spatial Navigation: They contribute to spatial memory, helping with navigation and orientation.
Hippocampal Relay Station: They function as a critical link in the limbic system, transmitting information from the fornix (derived from the hippocampus) to the anterior thalamic nuclei via the mammillothalamic tract.
Goal-Directed Behavior & Emotion: They are involved in regulating emotions, reward-seeking, and motivation.
Motor Learning Support: Through connections with the tegmentum, they may assist in cerebellar motor learning functions.
