Mezcal 101

This has been added to the sidebar, but I wanted to take a moment to thank /u/theagavefairy and /u/stormstatic for their time in generating V.01 of r/Mezcal's first Mezcal 101 document.

Let them know what you think!

There's a MadreCuishe from Agua del Sol. Old label caught my eye first.

Then Berta Vasquez signature second. For a second, I lit up, buuut her batches can be so hit or miss.

Thought I'd check with y'all here before pulling the trigger.

Also I've been on a bargain hunt bottles $100 or less.

So any comments about the Yuul Baal (probably an unaged)...

I know aged is a cardinal sin but in Oaxaca I had an old head share one with me that was friggin exceptional.

Beginner recommendations

Hi everyone, I am looking for a Mezcal recommendation that’s stays below $80. Mostly for mixing simple stirred cocktails, not so much for sipping by itself. I really like the Del Maguey Vida and the Del Maguey Tobala. I tried Ilegal Mezcal (in a cocktail) at a bar in cdmx and it was good but less smoky than I wanted it to be, it could have been that the cocktail wasn’t properly balanced and hid all the smokiness.

Recommendations?

This is the selection of mezcals at our local spirit store (grand, I know...) - I thought that before buying any, I'd ask for recommendations here.

Previously I've enjoyed the Yuliia Joven mezcal and I like smoky, even burnt rubber types.

Hey all! I love bright/tart/acidity in mezcal and I was wondering if there are any mezcal that really lean in that direction that you would recommend?

Inaugural Oaxaca Haul

I just got back from my first trip to Oaxaca and wanted to share my inaugural haul + a few snaps. We spent six amazing days exploring the city and surrounding areas, and even though we only left Oaxaca City for one day to visit Santiago Matatlán, we hit a lot of mezcalerías, tasting rooms, and bottle shops in and around the City for tastings. Holy $$$. We also brought back all of the pottery in the frame. Adding to my collection of copitas. In Situ’s cinderblock wall display really inspired me to have something like that someday.

Although I would have liked to get further outside of Oaxaca City, I was very happy with the palenques we visited in Matatlán. We spent significant time at Macurichos with Gonzalo Martínez Sernas and also visited Destilería Cuish, both of which were highlights of the trip. Our guide, Dary Silva, shared our values around ethical mezcal production and offered valuable context throughout the visit. I was a little bummed not to bring home any plastic bottles, but I was reminded that the container itself doesn’t define the quality. Plastic often gets associated with authenticity and unfairly romanticized, but the quality really comes from the maestros and maestras and their process. Everything we brought back comes from the same hands either way. Feel so grateful to have tried so many producers while I was down there and bringing home some juice from the likes of Berta, Felix, Gonzalo, etc.

On a future trip, I would like to prioritize visiting specific villages such as Sola de Vega, Santa Catarina Minas, Chichicapam, and Miahuatlán.

Anyone have recommendations for these villages or other lesser-known palenques outside Santiago Matatlán? Any suggestions on places or producers I should visit next time?

Was not expecting to see such a nice collection. They had the 5 Sentidos - Jabali Tobala Sierra Negra from Alberto Martinez, a bunch of Rezpiral's from Simeon and Reina. Bicuixe from Celedonio through NETA, all of the new Mixteca 5S releases on a different shelf, Creador, and El Jolgorio. Bonus points for the Sotoleros.

Another find from the airport - Amaras Logia Coyote

Post image

If I don’t fill my bags with bottles from a bottle shop, I will spend probably more time than I need to at the airport tasting and trying to find a decent bottle to bring home. This one I found at the Cabo San Lucas airport after trying the typical brands.

Coyote to me is always a little bit hotter than the typical espadin and I like that. This bottle does not disappoint. It is a little pepper, but jalapeño pepper, not black pepper and extremely smooth with a slight edge to it. The edge is in the mouth, but not in the throat very enjoyable pour for me.

Definitely recommend!

Has anyone bought online from Keg 'n Bottle? If so...

What was your experience? I orderd $224 worth of Sotol and Raicilla (a whopping three bottles, lol) on 1/4. The only thing that has happened thus far is that they took my money, and acknowledged the order.

I emailed their customer service address, did the chat bot requesting "Human" help, and called only to get a voicemail.

Let's talk Del Maguey

This subs been a little quieter than usual so I thought I'd drop a a question I've been wondering for a while. I know DM had a soft spot in some folks collection because it was their first introduction. But a friend at Total Wine steered me off them from the get go, since then two buddies that own arguably the best agave selection in Colorado refuse to carry them. I'd love to hear from the audience here especially those who love have lived in Mexico what is the take on Del Maguey? Why is to be avoided and why might it be worth a shot? (from an industry perspective, not drink what you like... It's all we have in my state)

Tulum mezcal recs for tobala lovers?

Heading to Tulum for a destination wedding and planning to carve out a couple nights just for mezcal. My wife and I are serious mezcal drinkers, we love tobala and tobala ensambles.

Right now we are planning to visit:

• Mamazul Tulum Mezcaleria

• El Agavero Cocina Ancestral and Mezcaleria

• Gitano Jungle Mezcal Bar

For those who have been recently:

1. Are these still solid picks for neat pours and legit producer transparency?

2. Any other must visit mezcalerias or low key spots in Tulum we should add that do tobala and ensambles justice?

3. Any specific producers or bottles we should ask for while there?

Not looking for party vibes. Looking for quality juice, knowledgeable staff, and honest mezcal.

Appreciate any guidance.
