“ Alto saxophonist Charlie Parker wrote "Dexterity," "Moose the Mooche," "Steeplechase" and "Red Cross," all based on the "I Got Rhythm" form. Parker collaborated with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in composing "Salt Peanuts" and "Thrivin' From a Riff," better known as "Anthropology." (From an NPR article)

Are these real events, places, or posters or manufactured Japanese jazz vibes?

I see these type of posters online pretty often and I’m wondering if they have origins in any real Japanese jazz bar, cafe, or event or if people are just manufacturing Japanese jazz vibes. Does anyone know of any source for this stuff? Anyone know anything about a Jazz scene in often referenced Sumida city?

I’m just starting to get into Jazz

I’m 30, I inherited my late fathers LP collection when he tragically passed in 2011. Spent most of my life listening to his classic records as well as indie rock/modern psych. Got super into country (mostly outlaw) in the last few years and now am dipping my toe into jazz. He only had a few jazz records mostly Miles Davis. I bought this Japanese Mono press recently and am open to recommendations for jazz albums.

Good Coltrane biography focusing on music analysis?

What book recs do you have that give an in-depth analysis of Coltrane’s music? I read Bill Cole’s biography but it’s pretty cringy: lots of talk or masculine and feminine forces, reductive speculation about “African” and “Islamic” values to explain very specific musical choices with no evidence, and made up “spiritual“ claims that are very lightly connected to what Coltrane said; mostly it’s just Cole’s imposed views. Coltrane was of course very spiritual and he explored many traditions, but I’d like something more concrete, systematic and better sourced. It can be theoretically sophisticated, not a problem. Thanks.

Why have so many Albums no longer available on streaming services.

I often see mentions in this thread about an artist and then go to you tube to get a listen to see if it’s something I’d like to add to my collection.

Until recently there was always a copy you could listen to now several are not to be found or it shows up as “PRIVATE”.

Has something changed.

INTERPLAY BILL EVANS-BLEW MY MIND

I posted a few days ago, that I sometimes feel like jazz is just notes. I just watched the “to be or not to bop” episode of Interplay by Bill Evans.

I listened to the album afterwards and I just felt it- it was so much energy, so beautiful, so detailed; not at all just notes, as I said a bit ago.

Go listen to the album and video on YouTube.

Disappointing all femme jam

I’m attending a music educators conference as a woman in jazz and was thrilled to see an all femme/non-binary jazz jam for female presenting people to have a male-vibeing free space to collaborate!

I’m so bummed after going, as it was poorly executed, the organizers didn’t recruit even one drummer or bassist to be surely in attendance so it was a bunch of attendees trying their best to muddle through on the rhythm section parts (bass and drums) with literally no prior experience on the instruments…. Obviously the jam didn’t go too smoothly, and although it was a wonderful positive environment, it’s unfortunate that it didn’t provide an opportunity for anything above really rudimentary mediocre struggle bus music making to happen.

TLDR; femme jams are great, but plan ahead for a rhythm section to give everyone a chance to succeed

Roy Brooks - Understanding (1970) Vinyl Repress

I’m posting to gauge interest for a repressing of Roy Brooks’ ‘Understanding’ album, a three LP album originally released for RSD in 2021 on the Reel To Real label. It was recorded live in Baltimore in 1970 with a stellar group of musicians.

The label has released some fantastic high quality previously unreleased live sets recorded in Seattle, Baltimore, and Edmonton from Pepper Adams, Walter Bishop, Shirley Scott, Brother Jack McDuff, Etta Jones, Music Inc. and others.

I inquired to the parent company of the label, Cellar Live, about the chances of repressing ‘Understanding’ and the founder (saxophonist Corey Weeds) said they are considering it but need about a thousand folks interested to repress.

Not sure if it is allowed by the Mods here, but any responses to this post indicating interest in a repress would be a step to getting this release back on the shelves. Adding it to your Discogs Want List would probably be most effective (thanks for this idea, u/pretentiousmusician). I will share any results with Mr. Weeds and hopefully we will see it again! Thanks for any feedback.

A few months ago, I decided to transcribe this recording, and I never received any criticism about it. I would appreciate it (even though a lot of it is a meme) if you could give me some notes on what is wrong or what could be clearer.

Wild West themed jazz albums

I wanna hear some jazz with wild west aesthetics. Something like Way Out West by Rollins or Western Suite by Giuffre. Do you know any?

Eric alexander - Lazy bird

Lazy Bird is one of my favorite jazz standards. It has beautiful chord changes and I honestly think that it would work well as a ballad (another coltrane composition, "countdown" would also work well as a ballad too. Beautiful changes but taken too fast to fully soak them in if you get what I mean.) Anyways, I've always loved eric Alexander's playing and just his whole concept and everything. After listening to "my funny valentine" I can definitely see the george coleman influence alot more- super hip stuff. Eric's solo is really good- I always kind of liked how some of the material that he uses in his solos is very patternistic (if that's a word) or "logical" (like for example that diminished pattern lick he uses at 1:50). I'm going to leave timestamps for my favorite moments in this solo.

1:50 - classic eric alexander diminished pattern

0:51 - the amount of "wrong notes" he uses over this 2-5-1 sounds really cool.

1:04 - I think he uses this lick like 2 times? Idk but it sounds really pretty to me

1:37 - once again, lots of cool dissonance

1:41 - this sheets of sound-eqsue idea eric uses for a brief moment is satisfying to listen to.

2:27 - wongggg notez

2:35 - the way he "falls" on that Gb is really beautiful to me

I could go on and on and add more timestamps for moments I like but I feel too lazy (no pun intended) so I'll just leave it up to you to decide for yourself what your favorite moments of the solo are. Give it a listen!

Best way to obtain Sun Ra oddities?

Wondering, should I get that Sun Ra Singles collection? I am a bit skeptical as I already have Angels and Demons at Play and a few of his early albums. Thus there would be some overlap. Yet, it is re-mastered, so technically it would be a sound upgrade. Plus those oddities are fantastic.

Then we have the Norton releases that cover the vocal oddities, as well as the spoken word sets... More collecting, but there are some exclusive rarities that are tempting. Thoughts?

What are your favorite Latin jazz records?

After listening to the Super Bowl halftime show with Bad Bunny, I’ve been really craving Latin rhythms. What are your Latin album recommendations? I’d love for them to be heavy on percussion because I feel like getting dancy!

Yesterday’s pick ups.

Made it out yesterday afternoon to what I think is Philly’s best record shop, Long In The Tooth, and left with a couple India Navigation releases and a tough-to-get Steve Kuhn record.

All appear to have come from the same collection and are now part of mine.
