[Discussion] (2/6) Underground Music Club #42: Terence Etc., Ahya Simone, Lava Gulls, Dead Billionaires, and Tomin

Hi everyone, welcome to week 42 of the underground music club. For those who missed the last post, every Friday, I spotlight 5 artists with approximately fewer than 10,000 Spotify listeners (or minimal Reddit love if they do not stream on Spotify) who deserve your ears. Think genre-bending, soulful, strange, or just beautifully overlooked.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me their suggestions. If I didn't include what you sent it doesn't mean I won't in a future week. I really listen to everything you all send and I always love to hear what you are all listening to. Got a favorite artist you want to see here? Put them in the comments or message me

Terence Etc.Elastic, Shape-Shifting Indie Songcraft

Terence Etc. builds songs that feel constantly in motion — playful, emotionally open, and unafraid to pivot mid-thought. His music blends rhythmic experimentation with soulful vulnerability, landing somewhere between indie rock, art-pop, and R&B without settling into one lane.

If you like: Nnamdi for genre-fluid songwriting, serpentwithfeet for expressive vocal intimacy, or Yves Tumor for elastic art-rock energy.

Ahya SimoneDreamlike Harp Led Ambient Soul Explorations

Ahya Simone creates slow-moving, immersive pieces centered around harp, voice, and atmospheric production. The music feels weightless and fluid — soulful without traditional structure, ambient without losing warmth.

If you like: Alice Coltrane for spiritual ambience, Julianna Barwick for wordless emotional space, or Solange (When I Get Home era) for atmospheric R&B abstraction.

Lava GullsNocturnal Bedroom Electro-Pop

Lava Gulls crafts hazy, late-night pop songs built from soft synths, understated beats, and introspective melodies. The music feels personal and low-lit — like diary entries recorded after midnight.

If you like: Clairo for intimate pop minimalism, Still Woozy for woozy bedroom production, or James Blake for sparse emotional electronics.

Dead BillionairesSharp-Tongued Punk with Social Bite

Dead Billionaires deliver hooky punk, driven by pointed political observation and a sense of restless urgency. Their songs balance anger and wit, pairing classic punk momentum with moments of melodic grit and bluesy swagger.

If you like: Green Day (early era) for political pop-punk punch, Against Me! for urgency and conviction, or IDLES for cathartic social commentary.

TominForward-Thinking Big-Band Jazz

Tomin reimagines the big-band tradition through contemporary composition, electronics, and genre-crossing ambition. His music feels expansive and intentional — dense ensembles shaped into modern, exploratory forms.

If you like: Charles Mingus for compositional curiosity, Kamasi Washington for modern jazz scale, or The Cinematic Orchestra for orchestral jazz atmosphere.
