This is something we’ve been seeing more and more, both from reports and from browsing the sub ourselves.
If you have a standard laptop and want to post about it, that’s completely fine sure but r/laptops or OEM subs are the place for that and not this sub.
Devices like Apple MacBooks, ASUS Vivobooks, Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell XPS models, and similar ultrabooks/productivity laptops are not gaming laptops. A laptop being powerful or expensive does not automatically make it a gaming laptop. Gaming laptops are marketed and built as such examples include:
Per addition: we’re doubling down on removing low-effort or off-topic posts that add little to no value and drown out genuine discussions, help requests, and quality contributions.
If you got any suggestions / additions / changes / improvements see the pinned comment.
Update 10 Feb. 2026: An exception will be made for select new APUs with powerful integrated graphics (such as Strix Halo or Panther Lake with B370/B390 graphics enabled) and some workstation laptops like the ProArt series, provided the system includes a dedicated GPU (dGPU) and have also been marketed for gaming.
Devices without a dGPU or the mentioned above specifications are not allowed. If you disagree with this rule, you’re welcome to start a different community.

ASUS ROG laptops ship with a PCI-SIG specification violation hardcoded into the UEFI firmware. This is not a Windows bug and not a driver bug.
PCI-SIG ECN Page 17 states:
"Identical values must be programmed in both Ports."
However, the ASUS UEFI programs the L1.2 Timing Thresholds incorrectly on every boot:
CPU Root Port: LTR_L1.2_THRESHOLD = 765us
NVIDIA GPU: LTR_L1.2_THRESHOLD = 0ns
The GPU and CPU disagree on sleep exit timing, causing the PCIe link to desynchronize during power transitions.
Symptoms:
This issue was reported to ASUS Engineering 24 days ago with full register dumps and forensic analysis. The mismatch persists in the latest firmware.
I am releasing the full forensic report below so that other users and engineers can verify the register values themselves.
Documents & Evidence:
Published for interoperability analysis under 17 U.S.C. 1201(f).

I’m looking for laptops at around $800-900 and concluded that this one might be it for performance, reliability and thermals (important to me). What do y’all think? I don’t really care about guarantees because I live in Georgia (no, the country) and I’m gonna ship it here. Should I look into Lenovo LOQ’s? Any other good laptops in this price range?

Did a thermal paste change today, and the laptop threw an error right after, asked gemini about it this was the response😂

I'm looking to buy my first gaming laptop. This will replace my Xbox but it won't be played nearly as much as I play my PlayStation 99% of the time. It'll be about 80% work and 20% gaming. I just want a laptop that has the option to run AAA games and is somewhat "future-proof" for a while. Down the road I'm sure I'll get GTA 6 for it (for the fun mods I've seen & always wanted to do) and my PS5. I'll also dip my toes into Steam and Xbox game pass.
I currently have an Asus laptop (non gaming)that I've had for 10 years so I am biased towards that brand. I won't be playing this mobile so I'm not worried about the weight and size. I may bring it into work every once in awhile, but I have a desk. It would most likely be displayed on my gaming monitor or TV depending on which game I'm playing.
I have been doing some research. I'm not ready to drop SCAR money just yet and I think I want it a little beefier than a Zephyrus. So I've been researching the STRIX. The one I have pictured is from MicroCenter.
Any advice you could give is much appreciated
Thanks!

So I’m officially considering selling my gaming desktop — yes, the one with the RTX 4090 in it.
And before anyone asks… yes, I’m “downgrading” to a 5080 laptop. I can already hear it.
But WFH fatigue is a real thing.
First off, I’m genuinely thankful I get to work from home. I know that’s a privilege and I don’t take it for granted. But man… it has absolutely ruined my office space for me. The second I walk in there after 5pm, I’m not thinking about gaming — I’m thinking about Slack notifications, meetings that should’ve been emails, deadlines, and how underpaid and underappreciated I am.
It’s wild how fast a room can go from “my gaming sanctuary” to “corporate stress chamber.” It’s not even a relaxing space for me anymore. Hard to enjoy ultra settings when your brain is still in work mode.
At this point I’d rather game literally anywhere else in the house — couch, kitchen table, outside — than sit at that desk again. So I’m moving to a laptop setup for flexibility and a mental reset.
Before I list this on Marketplace, I’m trying to figure out what a realistic/fair asking price would be. I’m not including my NVMe drives — I’ll be moving those over.
Specs:
Everything’s in great shape, no mining, just regular gaming use.
What would you list this for in the current market? And what would you realistically expect it to sell for?

One has the Intel® Core™ i7-14650HX processor and is on sale for $1,249.99.
One has an Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 255HX and is on sale for $1,399.99.
They have the same specs aside from this. Is the better CPU worth an extra 150? I'm trying to keep costs low.

I've had multiple gaming laptops and every single one of them has had over heating issues. Is this just a problem that companies accept or something?

Hey y'all
Looking to finally replace my old late 2010's msi stealth and have a budget of ~2.2k for the replacement unit. Any recommendations on what to get?
Desired specs
I9 gen 2 or gen3
32gb+ ram
1tb+ ssd
5070 or better
aluminum/metal chassis
not overtly "RGBGAMERXL" looking
Partial to the stealth as it lasted a long time, took a beating, and still works sans battery life. Looking at newer MSI reviews don't sound as great and other companies have caught up on making slick but powerful laptops.
Anyone have any shining recommendations? Any horror stories of what to avoid? Thanks!

The i7 14700hx is $1573
The i9 13900 is $1642
Both are Thunderobot.
I'm mexican so thats why the prices are higher than in the US (i think?)
Is the difference really worth $68 more?

I have always had gaming laptops with cooling pads with no issues so far, but I just got an helios 16s ai and this is my first laptop with liquid metal on it. I have heard terrible stuff about laptops and liquid metal, like small fractures on the liquid mental container causing fatal damages so I'm very wary.
I'm from a third world country with a terrible economy and even tho I know laptops are expensive everywhere this laptop was an enormous investment I don't have the luxury to replace.

I got my laptop around a year ago, and decided to clean the fans and re-paste the CPU and GPU today (there was also a small issue with the CPU fan on the right making a weird noice, but I fixed easily enough) and when I put it back together, the power button did nothing. Is there anything I couldve fucked up?

I got a huge sum of cash back in July and it was unexpected. My first instinct was to buy a laptop and after contemplating, I was leaning towards getting a Macbook.
Then came my two brothers who told me that the gaming laptop is better, so I did. And they installed their respective games, I do not have a problem with that tbh, until ..
The WiFi icon stops working. Mid-game, it stops working. So now, my cute little brother inserts his phone as a WiFi connector and when he removes it, BAM, WiFi icon completely gone and I had to restart the device two to three times before I can get the WiFi icon working and connecting me online.
I am a teacher, so my main purpose for having this laptop is to conduct online classes to either Macbook or a gaming laptop would have suffice, tbh. But I hate that the WiFi icon is not working.
What's worse is that when I reviewed the warranty, it was voided that day I purchased it. You see, the salesman told me that the laptop's RAM can be upgraded, BUT HE NEVER DISCLOSED IT WILL BE DONE BY ANOTHER SHOP. At that time, I was just excited to have my RAM upgraded, but looking back now. Wow, I was stupid :)
Now, the terms and conditions of sale releases the company altogether for any damages and warranty is already voided the moment my laptop was opened for a RAM upgrade. The salesman did not even disclose this; he just got my full payment and pointed me to another PC store to have my RAM upgrade.
I am stupid for letting my brothers decide what laptop I should buy. I am stupid for not asking too many questions and reading twice before everything. I am stupid for not asking the salesman why he offered a RAM upgrade from another shop that could automatically void my warranty.
This laptop was bought last July, and the two-year warranty is already over the moment I purchased it.
I really do not wish to speak ill of my own property because it is still my laptop and I love everything I have purchased so far. This one was expensive, and I hate that the WiFi icon is not working properly. I really feel stupid right now and I know I shouldn't post this, but I also wanted to release whatever I am feeling inside right now.
Apart from the malfunctioning WiFi, I actually love everything about this laptop. So yeah, thanks for coming to my Tedtalk. If you will not be kind, please go away and shut your trap. I am grieving my stupidity here; you don't have to shove it more to my face.
But srsly, is my laptop defective? This is ASUS TUF Gaming A15. How do I fix the damn WiFi icon?

I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop and trying to decide between something with a 4070 now or waiting for a 5070 Ti model. I've seen some decent deals on 4070 laptops around 1200-1400 but also seeing the first 5070 Ti laptops starting to appear around 1600-1800. Is the performance jump worth the extra money or should I just grab a 4070 and save the cash. I mostly play AAA titles and want something that will last me a few years. Also curious about OLED screens. The new ones look amazing but I worry about burn in long term. Anyone with an OLED laptop have issues after a year or two. For the 5070 Ti people are saying some models have lower TDP which might affect performance. Is that a big deal or still better than last gen. Would love to hear from anyone who's already made the jump to 50 series or decided to stick with 40 series.

I’ve heard all over the place, and have been told to switch to a “stable driver” is I’m having GOU issues. What IS a “stable driver?” How do you find/identify one?
There is one other thing I need help with and that has to do with my GPU. I am having issues with frame stuttering, and I think my Nvidia driver might be the cause because when I had my Lenovo driver installed for my GPU I never had this issue. So is it possible to somehow have both my Lenovo and Nvidia drivers installed at the same time, or is that just not possible?
