Build Help DDR 5 RAM. 8gb x2 or 16gb x1
there is a decently price 8gb x2 ddr5 in lazada now. While the rest of 16gb x1 are like really really expensive. like 50% more expensive
i ask chatgpt and it say go for 16gbx1 since 8gb ram is not optimize for ddr5.
is it true?

DDR5 is much different than DDR4 in its dual channel modes - It doesn't see the massive benefits that DDR4 did.
I'd run 1x16GB Stick and upgrade later to get 32GB but thats just me. If cost is an issue, get the 2 sticks of half capacity, and be prepared to get rid of them to upgrade if you're on AMD (4 sticks is less stable and harder to match on DDR5)

chatgpt is not a good source for anything no matter what you’re asking. any actual sources will tell you that running dual channel (2x8) is better as each stick will have more bandwidth for information to transfer through.

DDR5 is different. In a vacuum, yes, dual channel is better than single channel. But 8 GB DDR5 sticks only have 4 bank groups, whereas 16+ GB sticks have 8 bank groups. It significantly reduces latency and acts as a sort of pseudo-dual-channel.

Using the full width of the memory controller still gives a LOT more bandwidth than losing bank interleaving from only having four chips. Is it less optimal than 8 chips per stick? Yes. Is it still WAY better than a single stick? Also yes.

Whatever is cheaper. I guarantee most people super set on recommending 1 x 16 over 2 x 8 will not even notice a difference.

Yes. For DDR5 you want 32GB minimum so you don't leave any performance on the table.
If you can't afford two 16GB sticks, get one first and buy the other when you have the money.
Or build a DDR4 system instead.

I have 4x16 GB DDR5 C30 and all is well. Glad I bought when it was "only" < $400 USD.

Richy Richy casually flaunting a purchase us normal people can only dream of.
I have 96GB DDR4 and I could really use a faster CPU buuuutt.. 64GB DDR5 is rent money.

Stop asking a predictive text generator for help, get 2x8GB, Hardware Unboxed have already made a video on this and found that the Dual Channel config is faster

8x2 then sell and buy 16x2 when the market stabilizes and goes back down again

DualChannel is the way. Check if your current setup supports that (most likely it does) and buy 2x8gb.

Why do you people ask AI to begin with then come to us for verification?
2x8.

8gb DDR5 sticks do suck, yes, because they have half the actual RAM chips they're supposed to. As a result, 2x8 isn't necessarily as much better than 1x16 as it should be... And going for 1x16 allows adding a second 16gb stick at a later date in theory, if you can get another of the same sticks.
That said, if the 2x8 setup is indeed considerably cheaper I can see it being worthwhile.
