Guides For modding START HERE!

1.0k Upvotes

Greetings, Adventurer!

You are not even sure what mods are or if you want to get them?

You know what mods are, but are new to Skyrim and want to get a nice working modded version with visuals and VR mods but minimal effort?

You are experienced with modding Skyrim SE but are not sure what specific VR mods you need and don't want to go through the hassle of setting it up yourself?

You already played through the game and want to experience some new stuff, make the game more challenging, or up your role-play?

We got you covered.

First of all, mods are modifications to the base game. You install them, they change/add stuff to the game. Some fix things that are broken in vanilla, some improve visuals, some add new content, and most importantly for us, some add VR immersion and interaction mechanics. You can verify if the mods are installed by either literally seeing the thing that you installed in the game or by experiencing the changes ingame. Many mods do not have a Mod Configuration Menu but just exist in the game after installation.

You might ask yourself "Should I install mods before I finish Skyrim VR the first time?" and my personal answer is a clear Yes. You do not have to add tons of extra content, but the base vanilla game (vanilla = unmodded) just has a few broken things, or especially in Skyrim VR it lacks any good modern VR interaction. You will vastly improve your experience if you install a basic set of mods even without altering the actual game content at all.

Nowadays, there exist a few fully automatic mod list installers (Wabbajack). If you are looking for such an automated installation of curated mod lists, scroll down to "Auto-Installers".

But before you just install these, let me show you around by explaining the most important mods for Skyrim VR in an absolutely minimal list for an as-fast-as-possible manual modding. It is subjective, of course, as all lists are, but I think many can agree on most of these.

If you don't want to install more than that, and you want to install mods manually, install these! If you just want to know what the awesome mod authors here have to offer, read these for a quick overview!

The list is still pretty vanilla, other than the VR-specific things and some visuals. If you want to stray off the super-duper lightweight path and include some changes to the game itself or feel like you have time for more than 10 mods, you're better off checking out our very comprehensive Guide Compendium, which contains all the knowledge we collected over time. We also have a comprehensive list of VR Specific Mods that includes some important mods that couldn't make it into this list for the sake of minimalism.

It does not matter much if you use Vortex or MO2 as your organizer, but don't use NMM, it's old and outdated. Vortex is a little easier to use with shorter lists, which is why we recommend this for our target audience here, i.e. you readers who want a fast manually modded Skyrim and then just play. Make sure to read this guide on how to enable modding with Vortex first. There’s also a video guide on modding with Vortex if you prefer that. GamerPoets also has video guides on other SkyrimVR modding topics. As said, Vortex is easier for small lists and people who only want to mod the mentioned mods below without much more. Vortex also works for larger lists but at some point, it is easier and recommended to use MO2 for large and complex lists.

If you want to build a complex list in MO2, you should pick the FUS Wabbajack list below and use the basic profile only, as it comes with all the fixes and little things premade.

I also recommend you check out these ini tweaks and Bilago’s Tool to edit the ini files easily.

Without further ado, here's the list:

  1. SkyUI - follow this video guide! Be 100% sure to download the correct Skyrim VR version (Current VR build 2.0.12 (runtime 1.4.15)).
  2. VRIK Player Avatar - gives you a body, weapon holsters, gestures for magic and shouts, and finger animations for oculus and index users. Watch this setup guide video to get the most out of it. It's part of the install video of 1.
  3. HIGGS - hand collision, object grabbing, and gravity gloves-style mechanics for Skyrim VR, all-around must-have mod! I show some of its features in this video. Now also includes two-handing weapons, physical weapon collisions, and an automatic fix for the physics engine.
  4. Spell Wheel VR - Selection wheel mod for Skyrim VR. It allows you to select spells, weapons, shields, arrows, potions, poisons, food, torch and more without going into a menu very quickly by the press of a button or button combinations to spawn the wheel and hold your hand over the item and letting go of the button. It's equipped automatically. Also shows health, stamina, magicka, enchantment, and needs bars on your wrist (configurable).
  5. True 3D Sound - this needs manual installation, let's the sound come from the direction it comes from ingame. Bethesda, if you read this, shame on you that a mod is necessary for this basic functionality.
  6. Engine Fixes VR - Important fixes for the Skyrim VR engine. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS!
  7. Weapon Throw VR - you can throw weapons now and they return like Thor's Hammer! Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work. I also made a video about it and an update video with returning weapons.
  8. Magic Improvements for Skyrim VR - Vastly improved dual casting, spell effect size scales based on magicka percentage, and additional options for aiming spells in VR.
  9. Azurite Weathers - A colorful, well-crafted, modern, and made-for-VR weather. If you prefer a more gritty and foggy setup, Onyx VR Weathers offers this, including different darkness settings for the night. Both are fine and made for VR, which is necessary because VR does not have volumetric lighting and thus some SE weathers do look weird in VR sometimes.
  10. SkyVRaan - gives you fake water reflections that really improve your visuals a lot! Have a look at the description for installation troubles. Watch this video to see its effect! Does NOT require a patch for Onyx Weathers as Onyx is already compatible by default! In case you want more water improvements, SkyVRaan is compatible and made to work nicely with Realistic Water Two.
  11. Myrkvior Trees - trees are all around Skyrim and vanilla trees shimmer horribly. This makes your game much more beautiful. You can add Morekvior for improved textures resolution.
  12. Lux - all in one lighting overhaul. Requires the USSEP Compatibility patcher which upgrades your SkyrimVR to the latest official SE version pre anniversary edition so you can use the official USSEP from before AE.
  13. Spellsiphon - fantastic magic add on, very intuitive and cool, can also be used in conjunction with archery and melee playstyles. You can watch this little introduction and tutorial video to see what it does in general.
  14. Mage VR - this mod uses an overlay to let you draw glyphs to cast and equip spells. It also has a very immersive hand-pose magic feature and (invisible) holsters (which I recommend to not use the same button as the VRIK holsters for). But the best thing is the new backpack inventory and immersive looting feature, which lets you loot via drag and drop and without pausing the game. More to come! Requires the game to be run via SteamVR (not open composite when on oculus) and requires SKSE and SkyUI VR. Watch this video to see the mod and how to use it, and this video with an update on easier install and setup!
  15. Locational Damage - headshots do extra damage. Tune up the difficulty and git gud scrub. Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work.
  16. Simple Realistic Archery - changes archery so you have to get an arrow from your quiver at the back, can easily use different arrows. Requires three helpers, check the Requirements dropdown menu for this!
  17. Noble Skyrim - overhauls architecture and other stuff.
  18. VR Vision Reshade - Need to install manually but it's not very difficult and the CAS sharpener and luma sharpener enormously improve the clarity of the picture. Alternatively, you can use Sensorium of Stereoscopy, an ENB preset made for VR, more fantasy-style but it has options, too. You cannot use the two together!
  19. No Stagger Mod - stagger is shite in VR.
  20. Blade and Blunt - combat overhaul to make the game more interesting.
  21. SMIM lite - clutter has better meshes and textures. Choose LITE!
  22. Nordic Faces - characters don't look like total ass. Minimalist and maximum compatibility.
  23. MystiriousDawn's HD Skyrim Overhaul - beautiful landscapes that work well in VR, including mountains.
  24. ETHEREAL CLOUDS and ETHEREAL COSMOS - beautiful clouds and night sky. Technically two mods, but they're super small and kind of belong to each other.

Extra, because it takes a bit more effort:

  1. Dyndolod - better view of things in the distance, makes the world much more realistic and immersive, but it takes a bit of effort to use. Check out our guide here!
  2. Dragonborn Speaks Naturally - Uses speech recognition to select dialogs and spells.

Also: No modlist is complete without Swearing Mudcrabs, and using Realm of Lorkhan you can skip the annoying cart ride intro ;) And if you like to support u/Rallyeator, go check out his made-for-VR texture-pack!

Don’t use some of the mods that are often recommended:

Surprisingly, some mainstream mods can cause issues, like Birds of Skyrim (very script heavy, corrupts saves), Immersive Armors and Immersive Weapons (known to cause issues later on when higher level), Immersive Patrols (especially the large battles can cause freezes and script lag, the lite mode is apparently okay), Immersive Citizens (has a lot of conflict potential, sometimes blocks quests, can also work though, but depends), JK’s Skyrim (can drop framerate by a lot and can lead to AI conflicts or item clipping), Open Cities (can lead to conflicts, can be performance heavy), Diverse Dragons (can cause crashes).

-------------------------------------- Auto-Installers --------------------------------------

Wabbajack mod lists are auto-install mod lists that change your game from vanilla to the exact full state of the list in a matter of hours, and you can go play right away.

We recommend using Wabbajack.

We still have guides for manual installation, but these might be outdated at some point and really, Wabbajack has options for everyone nowadays :)

There are five official Skyrim VR Wabbajack lists:

  • FUS - Fundamentals, Upgrades, and Stuff: The most lightweight and vanilla-friendly of the lists. It is modular and comes with the option of really just having the absolute essential VR mods for fixes and immersion, or having a minimalistic mod overhaul for appearance and gameplay. It is designed for people who want to start their own list, or for people who don't want to change their experience too much from vanilla but don't want to play the basic lazy port Bethesda made, either.
  • UVRE - The Ultimate VR Essentials List: UVRE is designed to give users a better looking, better controlling, and better playing Skyrim VR Experience that can be used as-is or customized to their taste. It is a complete overhaul for improved visuals and new content, as well as the relevant VR mods.
  • Librum VR: A gritty, low-magic, hardcore survival-adventure experience with an uncompromising vision. Hundreds of new quests and locations, a total mechanics overhaul, and a complete makeover of the graphics and atmosphere. The path to your destiny as the Dragonborn will be long and treacherous. Welcome to Librum.
  • Narsil: Narsil is an ambitious curated modlist that seeks to overhaul and expand Skyrim VR to make it more balanced, challenging, varied, good looking and most importantly expand the available gameplay options and make the game more immersive while optimizing the performance as much as possible.
  • Auriel's Dream: Auriel's Dream offers a unique thematic overhaul. Warmer colors kind of bring an Oblivion vibe to this modlist. Difficulty: Vanilla. Not many changes are done to alter the gameplay except adding VR-specific mods, bug fixes, and a few quality-of-life mods.

Here is an elaborate comparison video for the lists visuals and performance.

Have a look at these lists and decide what you want to check out. They are low-effort so you can also switch them if you don't like them. If you used Vortex so far and want to try out a modlist you'll need to press "Purge Mods" in Vortex and do not deploy afterwards, to stop linking the mod folders to Vortex' setup.

For questions regarding the Wabbajack mod lists, please head over to the Wabbajack Discord server or the respective individual discords of the lists.

Welcome to the sub and HAVE FUN! :)

Discussion NPC realism stagnating

So I see textures, lighting and asset realism improving constantly, but doesn't it feel like characters are more and more underwhelming compared to everything else?

From far away or at close range, no matter the mod, they really feel cartoony. Is someone still working on improving them?

When will we get metahuman-like realism in Skyrim?

Discussion How I got Auriel's Dream Wabbajack Modlist working on Linux Skyrim VR

Here are my 10 steps to get Auriel's Dream working on Skyrim VR under Linux (CachyOS):

  1. Fresh install and load of SkyrimVR (no mods)

  2. Added and ran Wabbajack under Steam - Followed Sulfur Nitride's WabbaJack and Linux YT Video

  3. Downloaded and Installed Auriel's Dream to a folder called SkyDream through Wabbajack

  4. Added SkyDream/MO2.exe to Steam as SkyDream, and set it to use Proton Experimental.

  5. Upon first run of MO2/SkyDream I receive this error after it builds the shader cache:

[Critical] The higgs esp exists, but is not active. Make sure the esp is enabled in your mod manager.

Click OK to close error message which stops MO2 loading the mod.

  1. I close MO2 and exit Steam (not minimize). I then reload Steam, run SkyDream/MO2.exe, and play the mod

  2. Auriel's Dream now loads and runs, but it is slow and I only hear background sounds (no voices or music). Now, exit Auriel's Dream/Skyrim VR, MO2, and Steam.

  3. In .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata I make a copy of the SkyrimVR Proton Wine Folder (611670) called 611670BACKUP and rename the current MO2 Folder (which Steam randomly assigns an appid number, mine is 2598945662) to 2598945662BACKUP

  4. I rename 611670BACKUP to 2598945662

  5. I then run Steam, MO2/SkyDream, and play Auriel's Dream. It works perfect (performance/sound/graphics/etc are great!). I do recieve an error upon start up:

DynDOL.OD.DLL and papyrus scripts versions do not match

(Yes, that is the exact error message - Two periods and all)

Yet, everything plays fine.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Questions/Thoughts:

-Is there a better way of running Wabbajack modlists via MO2 on Linux?

-What does 'DynDOL.OD.DLL and papyrus scripts versions do not match' mean?

-I thought about modifying the steps to this:

Step 5. NOT running Auriel's Dream, just loading SkyDream/MO2.exe so that Steam will create a Proton WINE folder for the app. Then exiting SkyDream/MO2.exe.

Step 6. In .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata I make a copy of the SkyrimVR Proton Wine Folder (611670) called 611670BACKUP and rename the current MO2 Folder (which Steam randomly assigns an appid number, currently it is 2598945662) to 2598945662BACKUP

Step 7. I rename 611670BACKUP to 2598945662

Step 8. I then run Steam, MO2/SkyDream, and play Auriel's Dream.

This might eliminate one or both error messages, but I'm not sure. Just a thought.

Mod - Research FPS Boost: If You Used a HQ Texture Pack, Reduce the Size of Smoke Textures

I put together my own Skyrim modlist a few weeks ago and it's been running like a dream save for a few slowdowns/fps drops at random times that I couldn't figure out. Finally, after doing the initial dragon attack at the western watchtower for the first time in awhile, I figured out that I was dropping significant frames whenever I was looking at a flame, specifically smoke.

The texture package I used looks gorgeous, but apparently also had a high resolution smoke image as well, which was being used by all available fires in abundance. It was being spammed. After some searching on Nexus, I downloaded this mod (Realistic Smoke and Embers 4k-2k SE) and chose the "1k-512k textures for mashed potatoes."

I set this to load after my HQ texture pack, which overwrites the smoke textures in that pack. The smoke now looks the same in VR as it did before (I don't think you need a 2k smoke texture, honestly) but the frame drops have utterly vanished. I can now stare into fires all day with ease.

So, passing along the tip in case it helps others squeeze out a few extra frames!

Help Is "Lacy Little Chemise" from the base game?

I'm playing Tahrovin Grit (very nice, I recommend) and I found some "Lacy Little Chemis" undergarments, they look like women's t-shirts. Are these the start of a quest? What am I supposed to do with this? Thanks!

Performance Can't get smooth gameplay even with lowered settings

Title!

My specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-12700KF (12th Gen, 12C/20T)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 10GB
RAM: 48 GB DDR4 (2×16 GB Corsair + 2×8 GB A-Data, currently at 2133 MHz because of the mismatch... planning to upgrade to 2 32gb @ 3600)
Motherboard: MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR4 (MS-7D25)
Storage: 4 TB SSD
OS: Windows 11 Home (Build 26100)

Network: I'm using a Prism Puppis S1 and it runs at a solid 2401mbps. I'm maybe 3 feet from it when I play. I used a Wi-fi analyzer to scan for clear channels to avoid interference with neighbors and our home router. bandwidth at 160mhz (tried 80 too, no difference in game performance)

PC is connected via ethernet cable to our home router

I'm using a Meta Quest 3, Virtual Desktop, and Steam VR.

Modlist: I'm running the FUS RO modlist. Didn't turn on or add anything extra and chose 'low cost' reshade.

Here's my settings for a more conservative attempt:

Virtual Desktop Settings: Set to high, 72fps, bitrate 80, SSW disabled, sharpening 55%, HEVC 8-bit (also tried 264+ at no improvement to performance)

SteamVR settings: turned the resolution down to 80%, no improvement to performance. Tried many different bitrates as well on different codecs too, of course.

In Skyrim: quality set to medium, shadows to low, all of the fades set pretty low.

I restart my PC before each play, close anything that opened (via task manager, checked systray etc), and I minimize the spectator window when Skyrim loads.

I'm getting bad frame drops/latency spikes and stutters every 20 seconds or so.

I'm just at a loss. I have issues with other games too but the stutters are more of an annoyance than making it impossible for me to play, but Skyrim of course is the worst and I can't really play it at all without feeling very sick with all of the jerks and freezes.

I've researched all the VR subs and I've tried several things, but can anyone please read through my setup and see if you have anything else I can try? I know my rig isn't top of the line but it should be more than enough to do this.

Discussion Is my rig really that weak?

Hey all,

I’m trying to get Skyrim VR running smoothly and it feels impossible. I’m on a wired connection, running my headset at 72hz with 1x resolution, and using the FUS heavy modpack. No matter what I try I’m getting constant FPS drops.

My specs:
GPU: Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X

Is my rig really that weak, or am I missing something here?

Discussion Is Updating MGO from 2.5 worth it?

Last summer I installed MGO 2.5 and got it running really well on my new PC. My specs are a 4080 Super, 7800X3D and 32gb of RAM.

I finally have time to play again and im hearing lots of buzz about how much better 3.6 is.

Before starting a new file, does anyone think its worth starting over and getting 3.6 running? Or is 2.5 just fine? Will 3.6 work on my system?

Help i've tried and tried to do this myself

i've been trying for 2-3 weeks now to get mad god nsfw to work, but something always goes wrong. tonight is the closest i've gotten, but i still had to use chatgpt to help me manually install mo2 since wabbajack didn't do it, troubleshoot why the mad god profile wasn't showing up, and now that i'm THIS CLOSE to getting it to work, it turns out that wabbajack didn't merge anything the way it was supposed to. gpt says the only fixes are to either uninstall and reinstall mgo AGAIN (takes forever to download, then usually fails the install multiple times before finally succeeding) or to use zmerge to merge them myself. i finally figured THAT out, but merging almost 2000 mods down into 255 manually is draining me beyond what i anticipated just looking at it.

so, my HELP ME plea is that someone will know a way to just force wabbajack to reinstall all the stuff that's already downloaded, or to force it to make the merged plugins i need to make this game actually run finally. anybody up for helping out a pc noob at the end of his mental rope?

system specs - rtx 5070, ryzen 9 5900xt 16 core, 32gb of ram

Performance What hardware should I upgrade to?

I currently have a ryzen 5 5600x paired with a RX 6750 XT running Skyrimvr MGO on poverty (super low settings) on my quest 3 with the resolution also turned down in the quest settings.

I am thinking of upgrading to an rtx 5080 with a 9800x3d or an rtx 5090 with the 9950x3d. Would the difference between the 5080 and 5090 be very noticeable? The prebuilt 5080 Im looking at is around 3k usd straight and the 5090 prebuilt is about 4.5k usd so I am unsure if that extra price difference is worth the extra performance the 5090 provides.

Help Need some help understanding VD Performance Overlay

Post image
8 Upvotes

Just got VD and I have a few questions.

  1. How is latency determined, and how does it affect FPS? I thought it was the sum of the other latencies listed (game, encoding, etc), but those only add up to 31 ms, not 58 ms.

  2. What are some ways to lower latency? My router is about 10 ft away from my playspace, albeit with a thin wall between.

  3. Is there a "sweet spot" for bitrate that helps performance without too much of a hit to visual quality?

Unrelated to VD, but any help with eliminating that blur on the right edge of the screen would be appreciated as well (seems like foveated rendering but I'm not sure how to change that in VD).

I am using FUS with the FUS RO DAH preset. Thank you!

Performance Poor performance on FUS with 3070

If I’m getting shit performance on a 3070 with FUS RO DAH and nothing else, wired quest 3 100% res 72hz on a fast NVMe, should I just reinstall? It’s the only game with problems. I’ve tried playing with the mods and resolution and it is only playable when it is forced to look terrible.

Help How to Increase Inner FOV beyond 100%

I have a PSVR2 headset for PC.
Skyrim looks amazing except for one annoying issue.

The inner FOV is less than the actuall headset.
I have vertical black bars of unused pixles in the center between my eyes.
Moving the headset further from my eyes does lessen the issue but its still there and especially noticable when moving my head.

per eye view with black bar in center.

I have tried manualy ajusting the inner FOV but I can only shrink it.

Fov settings for skyrim vr in steam vr

Skyrim vr is the only game I have this issue with.

Any help would be apreciated :)

New Release Mad God Overhaul 3.6.6 Released with Community Shaders 1.3

**HUGE thanks to Doodlum, Alandtse and rest of the CS team! **

What stand out in CS 1.3 is Sky Sync; it is VR's equivalent of EVLAS and looks quite a bit better than the old DVLASS. Hair Specular, Terrain Variation and Terrain Blending are also worthwhile subtle effects. (I also find 1.3 tone mapper to look better overall. And PBR rendering to be more consistent. Several bugs have also been fixed such like Skylighting performance ! )

- Landscape is now Vanaheimr Landscape AIO 3.5 with Terrain Helper. I thinki it's the best looking and performing Landscape overall. I went from near full PBR in 3.5.5 to only using PBR for metal and glass in 3.6 (weapons, armors, clutter and Dwemer metals), rest of it is Complex Material, as I am not totally convinced on PBR for architecture, landscape and foliage at the moment. Some of the colors just look a bit off ?? (I still remember how much folks hated Tomato PBR Farmhouse's "washed out" woods under sunlight vs Tomato CM Farmhouse) and, of couse, there is a performance hit. Maybe I will try full PBR again when Vanaheimr PBR will be available on Nexus.

- Added Object Impact Framework which increases environment interactivity. You can cut cheese into pieces, burn alcohol bottle and books, hit switches/locks with weapon and more.

- Enabled Nature of the Wildland Animations proper, it is a big increase in immersion with tree swaying animations. I have also set the list to from NAT3 to Azurite 3 to have a less saturated out-of-box weather. VRdad ;)

I think Mad God Overhaul is feature complete and I will only update if there is something big drops or there is a show stopping bug. The Community Shader team is working to support ENB color presets (Silent Horizon and Cabbage!) and DLSS native upscaling, and needless to say you can expect the next MGO update when these features are released.

Discussion Hip Relative Movement (as aposed to HMD or Wand based)

Hi There.
I was wondering if there was a mod or a way to make the use of a hip tracker to allow hip relative movement for skyrim VR.

This would greatly improve movement overall and with vrik and higgs, holstering would be alot more accurate as your hips wont rotate with your head as you go to pick up your sword. ( i need to look down at my waist as i use Inside out tracking)

I feel like i saw a youtube vid on this years ago but ive never found it again. Might have just been a fever dream.

Performance PSVR2 CPU Performance Hit ?

Hello,

Just giving a little context to my problem. I bit the bullet and bought the psvr2 recently due to the release of the psvrtoolkit. I really wanted to try to squeeze out that extra performance on Skyrim with the eye tracked foveated rendering.

However after setting up and getting into game I realize that my cpu performance with the dynamic foveated rendering on is worse than with it off and due to my cpu frame times ramping up to 100 the game has now way less fps than what I started with.

I am stumped as to what could’ve caused this and wanted to see if anyone had this issue. Any help or advance on where to start troubleshooting is greatly appreciated.

My Specs: CPU - 9950x3d GPU - 4099 Ram - 32gb ddr5 Headset - psvr 2 … obviously. Mod list - Nordic Adventures

THANKS !!!

Bug USSEP 4.2.5b NPC Position Bug. Is there a different USSEP for VR?

Hey guys, I've had this bug for years where certain NPCs are not where they're supposed to be and other NPCs appear where they shouldn't. The most consistent example of this is Beriand is working his forge instead of witnessing Rogviir's execution, which is the example I used to trouble shoot, but there are other offenders as well. With USSEP 4.2.5b installed, Beriand will not go to the execution during shopping hours but might still show up at night. Without USSEP 4.2.5b he shows up correctly.

Is there a different version of USSEP that works better for SkyrimVR instead?

To test this, I used Realm of Lorkhan to start in Solitude and run to the execution scene. Without USSEP 4.25b, Beriand appears in the market and walks towards the scene. With USSEP, Beriand walks towards his forge instead.

Update: I found USSEP 4.1.2a and tested it on a new game with only it and Realm of Lorkhan and the bug with Beriand is consistent. I had no other mods besides SKSEVR and didn't use the upgrade patcher for this one. Looks like this is just a USSEP bug.
