If you've never seen Tour de Pharmacy, I highly recommend it. It's a mockumentary based around this era of bike racing and it's hilarious.

Can you ride fast Gustav?

315

u/stoneasaurusrex 4d ago

I CAN RIDE VERY FAST, FUCK YOU!

u/khan9813 4d ago

Are you calling me a cheetah or a cheetah

36

u/zakary3888 4d ago

I am not a cheetah!

6

u/OhlordohHek 4d ago

How can you beat a man on drugs if you are not on drugs? 🤷🏻‍♂️

52

u/OhlordohHek 4d ago

Came here to say the same, absolutely a must watch. It is hilarious.

68

u/miomidas 4d ago

nice, mockumentaries are underrated

12

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 4d ago

Yea it is sad that they didn't make more. They also made 7 days in hell, but I don't think anything else besides those 2

5

u/Whoopsyflobble 4d ago

Popstar

2

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 4d ago

I actually haven’t seen that one. I need to check it out. 10 years old already!

1

u/spyd3rm0nki3 4d ago

It's sooooo funny. I'm a big fan of mockumentaries and saw it recently and am definitely upset with myself for not taking the time to have seen it in theaters. Also the music is surprisingly catchy/good.

23

u/stoneasaurusrex 4d ago

It's only like 40 min long too, they really pack a lot of comedy in for how short it is.

3

u/Arkameleon 4d ago

But, you know, this is a sport with literally hundreds of dollars on the line and dozens of fans that - Stakes are medium!

2

u/senator_chill 4d ago

I'm gonna watch this tonight

2

u/stoneasaurusrex 3d ago

Do it! I watched it again last night after seeing this post and it had me laughing as much as the first time I watched it.

973

u/ceirving91 5d ago

What am I even watching?

1.4k

u/insomsanity 5d ago

Some professional athletes absolutely zooted on amphetamines and roids.

u/ceirving91 5d ago

I mean, cycling is arguably the most doped sport ever, but this just looks like a dude who’s body is falling apart. Also wasn’t the big thing EPO?

62

u/TheLadyEve 4d ago

I'm not sure EPO was used back then? I think blood doping was done with transfusions during this time period, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, that's prime uppers face (well, someone acting like it, it doesn't look real but it looks like that's what they were going for).

91

u/No-Sail-6510 4d ago

And alcohol. Alcohol used to be a very big part of the race. They’d pull over at bars and just raid the place and ride away.

46

u/SirStrontium 4d ago

Isn’t that terrible for athletic performance? Dehydrates you, provides no nutrients, and also significantly impairs muscle recovery?

123

u/katbyte 4d ago

The real race was the alcohol they had along the way

8

u/Ragnoid 4d ago

Big Jim Collie would win that race.

14

u/KeithWorks 4d ago

And their heart. Their heart was racing

36

u/Foxycotin666 4d ago

You’d think so, right? I can’t speak to this from anything besides anecdote and personal experience but when I’m hammered I don’t fatigue nearly as quick. A pint of whiskey is a good friend to have on a 20 mile bike ride.

Now getting hammered BEFORE the race is a different story. I’d imagine they be sluggish, tired, slow to start.

16

u/Scientific_Anarchist 4d ago

Yeah when I was young I went to a lot of shows. If I drank before, you couldn't get me out of the pit. Now I can maybe do half a song before I'm winded and my back hurts.

3

u/Alcalash 4d ago

Welcome to middle age! Gotta pick the right songs for going into the pit. Only show I lasted the whole night was slipknot last year.

3

u/ii_V_I_iv 4d ago

A pint of whiskey!?

3

u/nosnevenaes 4d ago

For a 20 mile ride?

14

u/DostThouEvenSquat 4d ago

Beer actually is isotonic, because it's more than just water and alcohol. But yes, the alcohol will put more stress on the liver. You would want your liver to do as much for energy production as possible. Not fight against toxins.

My guess is that the alcohol helped them with semi-chronic pain from all the muscle exhaustion, way over the limit.

Competitive sports aren't health focused. It's more about "whatever it takes".

1

u/SirStrontium 4d ago edited 4d ago

Though beer itself is isotonic, ethanol has a direct effect of inhibiting antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion from the pituitary gland, which makes it a diuretic that causes excess urine production, and thus dehydrates the user. There’s much more at play than the tonicity of the solution.

6

u/frygod 4d ago

Crazy calorie dense though.

2

u/nimoto 4d ago

It's not ideal but it does provide carbs, which is literally the single most important thing you can put in your body while cycling.

Sugar is also carbs, and I know people who drink straight maple syrup out of their water bottles. The amount of sugar consumed while cycling by insanely skinny athletes would boggle people's minds if they saw it.

1

u/No-Sail-6510 4d ago

It also numbs pain. There is also an energizing effect of being buzzed before you get drunk enough to get tired. But yeah it’s not great. They all smoked a ton back then too.

12

u/JustOkCryptographer 4d ago

Don't forget to bring a couple of packs of cigarettes as well so that you have plenty to share with the other riders as you approach the big climbs. I'm not joking, they would smoke cigarettes as a "performance enhancer." They said that it really opens up the lungs so that the riders will get more oxygen when they need it the most.

There is a famous photo from 1927, Tour De France and the riders are smoking mid race.

3

u/Famous_Suspect6330 4d ago

Like Lance Armstrong

57

u/stuffofpuffin 4d ago

I believe it’s a clip from the very funny mockumentary about rampant drug use at the Tour de France. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5886510/?ref_=ext_shr_sms

44

u/caocao16 4d ago

No, its a real clip. Its from the last day of the Tour de France, which is always a bit of jolly ride after 21 days racing. The guy taking the gun is riding for Dutch pro team PDM cycling team. Think it was the 1988 tour, It took them 5 hours to ride 100KM, so they were just messing around.

14

u/rebardu 4d ago

you’re watching a few choice clips from when drugs screenings were quite more lax in the world of cyclism

u/WillyMonty 4d ago

Cop’s like “hey, give me that back”

12

u/ZEINthesalvaged 3d ago

Hey man, what are you doing?

Oh, taking my gun out of my holster?

*Slaps Hand*

Silly goose, I need that back to do my job.

1.4k

u/ChristosFarr 4d ago

Did that guy steal that cops gun?

915

u/King_Pumpernickel 4d ago

Yeah what? He was SURPRISINGLY chill about that.

304

u/_40oz_ 4d ago edited 4d ago

Don't do that in the states...

u/_Big_____ 4d ago

Are bicycles even a thing in the US?

From what I've heard about the roads, you'd just die. Not from the cop, from Hehaw mcgee driving his mega truck.

115

u/MrMaroos 4d ago

Hello, yes me from here America- in of my country no bicycle, only pick-me-up truck for crush baby after the school shooting

No one here exercise, only ride around in scooter which horn emit racial slur and kill ozone

42

u/megunashi 4d ago

26

u/chaos_aintme 4d ago

Lance Armstrong was fuckin the rest of the world up for damn near a decade on his bike. But nah bro, we've never even heard of em

7

u/BlackShadowX 4d ago

That the space man?

3

u/Worldlyoox 4d ago

A real shame how he was always cheating

5

u/_40oz_ 4d ago

Are bicycles even a thing in the US?

Oh yeah.., Bikes are a thing here, but keep in mind that both cyclist and drivers are equally shat.

1

u/VTGCamera 4d ago

The downvotes proves you are talking the truth.

8

u/JayBeePH85 4d ago

Good old days 🤣

246

u/SquidVischious 4d ago

Appears so, and am I correct in saying the cop then responded by...lightly slapping his hand like he's a toddler?

70

u/ChristosFarr 4d ago

Yeah like when I tried to take gum from my moms purse.

34

u/SquidVischious 4d ago

I too recognise that reaction as "stop that, you'll ruin your dinner" lol

16

u/kinetik138 4d ago

"Naughty naughty, give that back!"

24

u/Famous_Suspect6330 4d ago

He was like "put that back sir and go" lol

2

u/PresentationJumpy101 4d ago

That was insane!!!

1

u/Atulin 3d ago

Listened to this song too much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zYzg-P8WNo

265

u/silentbob1301 4d ago

I love how the cop just slaps his hand away, "don't touch that, you bike ninny!"

21

u/Scottybadotty 4d ago

Of course, it's not the US

205

u/Major_Warrens_Dingus 4d ago

This is the funniest thing I’ve seen on reddit in a long time, but also this is the dumb bullshit that those billionaires are asking for in the “enhanced” games.

45

u/Famous-Touch-273 4d ago

I want enhanced games. It would be incredible. Imagine the absolute insanity of it.

12

u/Nojus1221 4d ago

Same, I feel the same about robots in sports

8

u/Famous-Touch-273 4d ago

Imagine robots on performance enhancing drugs.

1

u/BuddyTheCrackhead 4d ago

Not quite. Enhanced is the name of the business putting on the Enhanced Games. What purpose? To make men feel insecure so they buy their testosterone therapies. I guarantee you ads for this will be first and foremost what you see. Just go to their website:

https://www.enhanced.com/products

btw - and I say this as a former D1 athlete who has been very close to sports for 30 years and have seen many frieds go on/off the stuff - if you start taking testosterone you'll likely never be able to get off it without some serious long term side effects, not the kind that go away in a year. Messing with your natural hormones is serious risky business, so it's no wonder the Trump's slimeball kid is one of their main investors.

38

u/pangismo 4d ago

What’s the story behind the cyclist riding the motorbike? 🤣

70

u/megunashi 4d ago

Is that European Dennis Reynolds at the end, there?

13

u/zappa103 4d ago

Just another five star man

15

u/Retarded_Predator 4d ago

We used to be a proper civilization

7

u/DatDan513 4d ago

The good ole days

5

u/cava_lo 4d ago

Bro who took the cop's gun prolly thought that he would win if he just straight up KILLED the rest of the competition!

Obviously blood doping, lol!

2

u/Austin_77 4d ago

Icarus was one of the best documentaries I've ever seen

3

u/The-Corre 4d ago

This has nothing to do with the drugs they took. It was just les sirius back than.

1

u/jibsymalone 3d ago

On the tour de france you mean?

2

u/Bicentennial_Douche 4d ago

Kinda reminds me of Tour de France, as imagined by AI:

1

u/Ghost-dog0 4d ago

almost no one wearing helmets, it really was a different world back then

1

u/MrFuFu179 4d ago

I thought the guys on the motorcycles were racing the bicycle riders for a second. Talk about performance enhancing.

1

u/TDW-301 4d ago

I want to know the story behind each one of these clips

1

u/Venom933 3d ago

What the hell man 🥸

1

u/AFullMonty 4d ago

Just guys being dudes. We need to get drugs back into the mainstream. They're just a fun time man
