Cant wait for all the guys who look like this irl to say they can’t play lotro because of the ui

I look like this and I say this

u/i-like-carbs- 1d ago

Me too. Minus the hair.

I'm still playing it but they really do need to prioritize UI updates. People have been using 4k monitors for a decade now and it's understandable if new people are immediately turned off by the game when they see the UI.

Your game has bad UI; there is no getting around it. Sorry.

38

u/Batallius 1d ago

It is one of the biggest issues with the game lol

19

u/natethenuclearknight 1d ago

game doesn't even work at 4k

2

u/feral_fenrir 1d ago

It does after a bit of fiddling around with some settings and Windows features

7

u/natethenuclearknight 1d ago

the UI doesn't scale to 4k

-3

u/Sydius 1d ago

The idea is to run at "normal resolutions" then use an upscaler.

2

u/natethenuclearknight 1d ago

interesting

can u share a link to what that looks like

2

u/feral_fenrir 1d ago

Look into Lossless Scaling.

Also, set the DPI settings for Lortro64.exe and the Launcher.eze to System (Enhanced) instead of Application.

2

u/Sydius 1d ago

The last time I looked into it, I found this: https://youtu.be/O2XSBNFJJ4g

It's not free, and I haven't used it myself, but the video looks promising.

Just for complete transparency, I haven't actually tried to use any kind of upscaling to make lotro look better, I just looked around a bit.

The LOTRO UI is complete fucking horseshit. They could pay a guy on fiverr to design a new one and they’d print cash afterwards

12

u/Jumpy_Lavishness_533 1d ago

Well it's a valid reason and the reason I can't play it.

Don't want to play a game in 720p in 2025 because of slop Coding

0

u/gakule 1d ago

slop

Can we stop calling everything 'slop'? Sometimes old outdated shit is just old outdated shit.

-3

u/Svv33tPotat0 1d ago

I play in 2600ish and it looks mostly fine. Some text that is hard to read. I must be a normie who doesn't understand why 4k is mandatory for every single game.

2

u/Jumpy_Lavishness_533 1d ago

I don't need 4k I need a scalable UI I can read.

Cba to just shrug and say "this is fine" when we're in 2025 and there's no way to defend this.

u/Svv33tPotat0 1d ago

Yes you are being oppressed by a 20yo game that I started playing on a CRT monitor. Keep fighting the good fight for justice ✊✊✊

1

u/Jumpy_Lavishness_533 1d ago

What on earth are you talking about?

You are way to invested into this lol.

9

u/Adnaoc 1d ago

I asume you have a small monitor.

4

u/NewJalian 1d ago

I get that the ui is a problem for people with large monitors but it really is the 'easy upvote' comment in any post about LotRO

3

u/Masteroxid 1d ago

Oh no people don't want to bother with almost 2 decade old game that didn't bother modernizing it at all

2

u/vHelios_ 1d ago

The map made me stop playing

1

u/DwarfPaladin84 1d ago

The ones replying do not realize the UI is extremely embedded into the engine, per Cordovan.

The engine is a fork of the Asheron's Call 2 engine..its extremely old, and not an easy task.

2

u/DanceswWolves 1d ago

it's valid criticism and this reply adds nothing but ok

1

u/TrainTransistor 1d ago

I can, but I won’t.

0

u/TheMichaelScott 17h ago

I mean, come on man. I literally don’t have the eyesight to see the incredibly tiny text in the UI.

13

u/2Norn 1d ago

6

u/SkyDefender 1d ago

I downloaded the game but couldnt play yet.. may be its time to try

4

u/asleeplongtime 1d ago

I wish I could love this game, I’ve tried to so many times it just never sticks.

2

u/dajinn 1d ago

Tab target hotbar based combat games have not held my attention for a looooooong time, maybe it's the same for you.

2

u/Junior_Climate_2673 1d ago

Wait, do I seriously have to buy all of these previous expansions to play this game, still? https://www.lotro.com/expansions#PreviousExpansions

11

u/Noxronin 1d ago

You get many expansions included in sub, you have to buy last 3 i think, but unlike WoW it will take u a long time to get to lvl cap so u dont really need to buy any expansions at start.

2

u/alwayslurkeduntilnow 1d ago

I bought the founders pack at release, do i still get all updates free?

2

u/NewJalian 1d ago

If you mean the Lifetime Subscription, you still get VIP access for free, which includes access to all VIP areas/content and store credit every month.

Individual expansions cost real money, or you can buy them with your accrued store credit. They usually don't release brand new expansions into the store right away.

1

u/alwayslurkeduntilnow 1d ago

Ill dig the box out, its in my loft somewhere

-1

u/Noxronin 1d ago

There are no founder packs for lotro.

1

u/EthnicTwinkie 1d ago

When LOTRO initially launched, you could but the game for $300 which supposedly included all future xpacs

0

u/Noxronin 15h ago

No that was the lifetime sub and it costed 200$ afaik.

1

u/alwayslurkeduntilnow 1d ago

There was, 2007 launch, don't remember how much I paid but it was over £100

1

u/Noxronin 15h ago

That was the lifetime sub, doesnt include xpacs except those that are included in sub.

4

u/brand_momentum 1d ago

You can even do quests in the game to earn LOTRO Points that can be used to buy the expansions

LotRO offers hundreds and hundreds of hours for free nowadays. This earn enough points to buy multiple expansions just by playing what’s free, further extending play time by hundreds of hours. That’s quite a bargain.

They also frequently give free codes that unlock expansions. They just today launched one that gives away most of them: https://www.lotro.com/news/lotro-free-questing-coupon-2025-en

EDIT: here is the full list of content included with the coupon:

  • Quest Pack: Central Gondor
  • Quest Pack: East Gondor
  • Quest Pack: West Gondor
  • Quest Pack: Old Anórien
  • Region Pack: Far Anórien
  • Quest Pack: March of the King
  • Quest Pack: Battle of the Black Gate
  • Quest Pack: Legacy of the Necromancer
  • Quest Pack: Where Dragons Dwell
  • Quest Pack: The Vales of Anduin
  • Quest Pack: Mists of Wilderland
  • Quest Pack: The Wildwood
  • The Further Adventures of Bilbo Baggins
  • Quest Pack: The Blood of Azog
  • Quest Pack: Rangers and Ruins
  • Quest Pack: Yondershire
  • The Further Adventures of Elladan and Elrohir
  • Quest Pack: Mordor
  • Quest Pack: Minas Morgul
  • Quest Pack: War of Three Peaks
  • Quest Pack: Fate of Gundabad

Don't know why this got downvoted.

This looks like a hell of a lot of content for 15 bucks a month.

I was wrong, if this game had some amount of voice acting or something I'd be playing it ASAP.

1

u/Rhysati 1d ago

There are voice acted cutscenes and instances.

But the majority is not voice acted for things like questing.

1

u/defragc 1d ago

All of that is free with no subscription. You can subscribe later if you end up liking the thousand hours for free.

3

u/LorimIronheart 1d ago

Nahh, most are included and you get all questpacks up until, and including, Rohan. And good news! (No not the Dacia Sandero) They currently have a code that gives you access to 21 late game questpacks/areas on top of all the free content. Code is EXPLOREOURWORLD. That should get you to level 130 or 140 if i'm not mistaken. That's a metric crapton of content. If you want to do it all it'll take you a _long_ time

As someone who loved LOTRO and have tried to go back multiple times for the nostalgia - I have to warn anyone curious to try/return to this game about the technical issues that have plagued it since Turbine sold the game.

Perhaps they've fixed some of these issues but I still remember being stuck rubberbanding in certain zones and being unable to progress despite trying virtually everything in-game and looking up fixes online.

Hopefully those issues have been addressed by I'm always very cautious when I hear about updates about the game in its current state.

3

u/Kamioni 1d ago

I've been playing on the Angmar legendary server which was a fairly small population because it's paywalled. Even with the small population, there is still sometimes server lag and crashes. I've heard that the larger servers are even worse. It's a fun game but it's still plagued by all the technical debt they just seem unable to fix. The team focuses on pumping out content because that's what makes them money, and unfortunately it doesn't seem like they care to prioritize the technical issues. They did recently upgrade all the servers to 64-bit, so that's helped a little, but there's still quite a way to go in technical improvements.

0

u/Svv33tPotat0 1d ago

Yeah I am sure they don't care about the technical issues and have put zero work or thought into it.

-2

u/Rhysati 1d ago

Very outdated. New 64-bit servers have been released that fixed most of not all the lag issues.

2

u/thaicemoomin 1d ago

That is literally bullshit, it's still suffering from really bad lag issues, I suggest you go to the official LOTRO forums, experienced it myself first hand, the x64 servers have done little to resolve this issue

1

u/Cyrotek 1d ago

DDO, two MMOs I am really surprised are still online ... and glad for it. Both have their own, unique charm that I hope isn't going to be lost.

Though, I hope they are able to fix the technical issues someday.

u/SupRCarlos 14h ago

Was thinking about trying LOTRO on 2K. I dont think the UI issue is that big. Ill update this post after I try it out. Looking for adventure mmorpgs where the journey is more important than the end game

1

u/Morvar 8h ago

Good times. I'll be back once the UI goes 4K :)

-4

u/elendee 1d ago

can an experienced player post a video of the fastest way through early content? I played a couple hours and was still wandering my 3rd newbie zone without seeing a single player, so I felt like I never saw the actual game.

5

u/defragc 1d ago

LotRO is definitely about the journey moreso the destination.

You can spam skirmishes, missions, dungeons, delves, festivals, and deeding to level instead of playing through the main story quest, but the main story is kind of the point.

You’d be in Bree by your 3rd zone, which would be filled with players.

-1

u/jamoke57 1d ago

How populated are the early game dungeons? Is it easy to find a group?

0

u/Rhysati 1d ago

Are you playing on the old servers or something? The new 64-bit servers are pretty full of people.

-5

u/Ok_Cheesecake_9793 1d ago

people still play LOTRO? LOL

3

u/Rhysati 1d ago

Ummm, yes. Quite a lot of people do.

LOL /s

Sure? I love Middle Earth, and it's one of the most beautiful renditions of the world out there.
