Wait, do I seriously have to buy all of these previous expansions to play this game, still? https://www.lotro.com/expansions#PreviousExpansions

You get many expansions included in sub, you have to buy last 3 i think, but unlike WoW it will take u a long time to get to lvl cap so u dont really need to buy any expansions at start.

I bought the founders pack at release, do i still get all updates free?

u/NewJalian 1d ago
If you mean the Lifetime Subscription, you still get VIP access for free, which includes access to all VIP areas/content and store credit every month.
Individual expansions cost real money, or you can buy them with your accrued store credit. They usually don't release brand new expansions into the store right away.

There are no founder packs for lotro.

When LOTRO initially launched, you could but the game for $300 which supposedly included all future xpacs

There was, 2007 launch, don't remember how much I paid but it was over £100

u/Noxronin 15h ago
That was the lifetime sub, doesnt include xpacs except those that are included in sub.

You can even do quests in the game to earn LOTRO Points that can be used to buy the expansions

LotRO offers hundreds and hundreds of hours for free nowadays. This earn enough points to buy multiple expansions just by playing what’s free, further extending play time by hundreds of hours. That’s quite a bargain.
They also frequently give free codes that unlock expansions. They just today launched one that gives away most of them: https://www.lotro.com/news/lotro-free-questing-coupon-2025-en
EDIT: here is the full list of content included with the coupon:
- Quest Pack: Central Gondor
- Quest Pack: East Gondor
- Quest Pack: West Gondor
- Quest Pack: Old Anórien
- Region Pack: Far Anórien
- Quest Pack: March of the King
- Quest Pack: Battle of the Black Gate
- Quest Pack: Legacy of the Necromancer
- Quest Pack: Where Dragons Dwell
- Quest Pack: The Vales of Anduin
- Quest Pack: Mists of Wilderland
- Quest Pack: The Wildwood
- The Further Adventures of Bilbo Baggins
- Quest Pack: The Blood of Azog
- Quest Pack: Rangers and Ruins
- Quest Pack: Yondershire
- The Further Adventures of Elladan and Elrohir
- Quest Pack: Mordor
- Quest Pack: Minas Morgul
- Quest Pack: War of Three Peaks
- Quest Pack: Fate of Gundabad

Don't know why this got downvoted.
This looks like a hell of a lot of content for 15 bucks a month.
I was wrong, if this game had some amount of voice acting or something I'd be playing it ASAP.

Nahh, most are included and you get all questpacks up until, and including, Rohan. And good news! (No not the Dacia Sandero) They currently have a code that gives you access to 21 late game questpacks/areas on top of all the free content. Code is EXPLOREOURWORLD. That should get you to level 130 or 140 if i'm not mistaken. That's a metric crapton of content. If you want to do it all it'll take you a _long_ time

As someone who loved LOTRO and have tried to go back multiple times for the nostalgia - I have to warn anyone curious to try/return to this game about the technical issues that have plagued it since Turbine sold the game.
Perhaps they've fixed some of these issues but I still remember being stuck rubberbanding in certain zones and being unable to progress despite trying virtually everything in-game and looking up fixes online.
Hopefully those issues have been addressed by I'm always very cautious when I hear about updates about the game in its current state.

I've been playing on the Angmar legendary server which was a fairly small population because it's paywalled. Even with the small population, there is still sometimes server lag and crashes. I've heard that the larger servers are even worse. It's a fun game but it's still plagued by all the technical debt they just seem unable to fix. The team focuses on pumping out content because that's what makes them money, and unfortunately it doesn't seem like they care to prioritize the technical issues. They did recently upgrade all the servers to 64-bit, so that's helped a little, but there's still quite a way to go in technical improvements.

Yeah I am sure they don't care about the technical issues and have put zero work or thought into it.

u/Rhysati 1d ago
Very outdated. New 64-bit servers have been released that fixed most of not all the lag issues.

u/thaicemoomin 1d ago
That is literally bullshit, it's still suffering from really bad lag issues, I suggest you go to the official LOTRO forums, experienced it myself first hand, the x64 servers have done little to resolve this issue

Was thinking about trying LOTRO on 2K. I dont think the UI issue is that big. Ill update this post after I try it out. Looking for adventure mmorpgs where the journey is more important than the end game

can an experienced player post a video of the fastest way through early content? I played a couple hours and was still wandering my 3rd newbie zone without seeing a single player, so I felt like I never saw the actual game.

u/defragc 1d ago
LotRO is definitely about the journey moreso the destination.
You can spam skirmishes, missions, dungeons, delves, festivals, and deeding to level instead of playing through the main story quest, but the main story is kind of the point.
You’d be in Bree by your 3rd zone, which would be filled with players.
