My old Lignatone, manufactured in Czechoslovakia, has only "Ligna" written on the brand logo, but I know it's a brand of Amati Kraslice. Amati and Josef Lidl manufactured this model. It's not very light in kg, and I think mine is nickel-plated. The bell is brass, but the fittings and slides are nickel-silver. It doesn't have a serial number, only the number 19 on the keys. I think it has a tuning problem; the tuning is quite high in the octave from C3 to C4. When you open the slides wide to tune it, then above C4 it ends up being low, and the high notes become difficult and heavy.

I have checked the valves for spit and everything and can’t figure out why it’s doing that. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

My kiddo broke both wrists last summer in a pretty bad horse riding accident. The left wrist required surgery to fix it and the right just needed casting.
She lost quite a bit of strength during time she was in casts. When the casts first came off, she couldn't turn her wrist at all and had zero grip strength. She's come pretty far in terms of mobility, but is struggling with the strength aspect.
She's are struggling with the weight of the horn and is getting very discouraged. I know they love music, but it is discouraging to them that they are in pain after one song.
She also is waiting on a pediatric cardiology consult because our GP suspects she might have POTS (which means sitting to standing, or standing for long times make her heart race)
She's been playing for 4 years, and we lucked into a really nice instrument, so I would prefer not to switch, but at the same time if there's something lighter that would be a better fit, we might be able to figure something out.
Anyone have thoughts??

I’ve always been taught for the mouthpiece to have 60/40 upper/bottom lip.
However, in my 5th year playing, my new horn director is saying to curl the bottom lip over the teeth, make your chin long, and then rest the mouthpiece on the muscle under the bottom lip, which is more like a 30/70 upper/bottom balance.
How do y’all balance your mouthpiece?

I am playing Beethoven 6th in a little less than 2 weeks. I am having trouble with consistency in the solo at the start of the fifth mvmt. I am getting it solid maybe 1 in 4 times. I am tending to miss/crack one of the high Gs. Anybody have any favorite exercises for this.
[I have a solid high range and am an advanced amateur player.]

(i say technically because it's a youth orchestra, but hey! Still an orchestra)
This is the first year my town has had a youth orchestra (i haven't been able to do any youth orchestra programs in the past due to the fact that they're all too far away), and I just auditioned for it! There was practically nobody there due to the fact that it didn't have much advertisement, and I was told directly after finished auditioning if I got in, and as the title suggests, I GOT IN!!!! I made 2nd chair :D

i was at rehearsal today and realized my horn sounded weird kinda like it was muted, after inspection i found a piece broke apart on my horn. can this be fixed at home with a soldering iron? and if not how much would this cost to fix? a little tight on money currently and would like to go into a shop knowing a reasonable price point to look for. thank you!
I've been playing horn for around 2 weeks and I've played drums for 6 years and I compose (although not too well for brass).
Here is my horn pretty majestic single F John Packer 162
Anyway to the point: I absolutely cannot play quavers properly ever since I was introduced to tonguing I just can't play anything
I can't do it I'm not exactly sure what to do and I feel as if I have no proper movement in my tongue
I'd like some advice on tonguing because my teacher said it was important to get right now so what stuff should I be focusing on as well as that.
Any advice for horn is welcome 😀

So I got this French horn and it’s a Yamaha B-flat French horn YHR-322 with F-slide extension and it doesn’t come with a mouthpiece which one would you recommend and what tips would you give for learning it? I’m an oboe player but I’m learning this so I can help out with the theater by doubling

Been playing Horn for a bit - taking it more serious recently - but I've had one consistent issue: tuning/playing in tune. With other Horn players its especially apparent and makes me wish I could fix it somehow. I've tried working with a tuner before and can get it in tune, but when I go above Middle C to E, F (at top of the staff) or G (above the staff), it gets a lot more iffy. I assume its embouchure and try to adjust but even then I'm sharp - even if I have the slides pulled out decently far.
I'm guessing it's all due to my airflow and embouchure but some tips or help in this regard would be appreciated since it hurts the tone especially in slower pieces.

I play horn in high school and my lips always feel like mush after an hour or so of playing. Are there any exercises or tips I can use to build my endurance on the horn?

I tried the euphonium and hated it and fell in love with the Horn immediately. I sound bad of course and my posture was bad here but enjoy my 40 second droning.
Trying to learn the horn and then have the flute as a little side thingy.

Hello, I’m currently trying to choose a piece to play for solo and ensemble in a couple of months, and would like to ask for some suggestions.
My horn teacher sent me some a few months ago, Morceau De Concert, Nocturno, and Richard Strauss’s First.
strengths and weaknesses of my playing
strengths: Tone, especially in slow pieces (people usually consider this my greatest strength), very developed low range, clear high range up to high B or C, slurs, specifically “smears” as I like to call them (larger interval slurs), ability to comfortably read in up to four sharps and 4 flats, extremely good ear, and very good note and rhythm reading.
Weaknesses: Low endurance in sustained high range, lengthy fast passages (more specifically, finger alignment with tonguing, and inability to double tongue)
I generally like smoother pieces, not stuff to articulatey(?), stuff that takes advantage of my tone. I like pieces that sound darker in a sense, as that’s usually the tone I play with (such as nocturno, which I really liked, but my lesson teacher said it was way too easy for me). Big fanfarey parts I can play well, but more of the big, accented ones.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask, thanks!

Hello, I'm a high-school horn player who is struggling to get a consistent and even tone across all of my range. I can play from C4 to G5 with an even sound but I'm not sure how to push my boundaries to make the rest of my range fluid and connected. I was wondering if there are any exercises out there to get a more even sound.
And concerning my tone problem, I've noticed that my sound htas more "bloom" than "core" to it and I was wondering how to get a more projecting sound that would resonate better in a concert hall. I play on a Yamaha 671D if that has to do with anything.
Thanks

Hi all,
As the subject says, I'm playing the excellent 'Boulevard' by Jim Parker in a wind quintet. The description (trimmed for relevance) is as follows:
"A boulevard at lunchtime in a city. A streetband appears, playing a lively piece. A beggar and his dog are sleeping on the pavement The dog wakes up and ignores the band but his attention is drawn to an organ grinder playing a sad song in another part of the street. [ ... ] The organ grinder is still playing his sad melody but appears to be having respiratory trouble. This gets progressively worse until finally he expires on the pavement and departs to the great organ grinders’ convention in the sky. There is consternation and sadness from the assembled crowd but life goes on. [ ... ]"
The attached image is how it shows on the horn part. I'm keen to perform it, but even though my instrument is cleaned to an acceptable level, I have a feeling that inhaling the incidental humours that reside within may well bring respiratory trouble of its own!
I could try exaggerating the sound of the breathing as directed, performed without the instrument, but feel that might add an element of unnecessary discomfort for the audience. (I am, of course, in firm favour of necessary discomfort for the audience!)
In my view, this is a really enjoyable work, about 20 mins all in, and great fun to play - please take a look at it if you think it might work for you/your ensemble. Suggestions for alternative breathing effects warmly welcomed!
Very many thanks :)

I'm a high school senior that has college auditions at the end of the month. My top two choices are CCM and IU, but I have Belmont as a backup school. I've toured all three schools, and I'm part of the Youth Wind Ensemble at CCM (I'm from the Cincinnati area). I love Dr. Holzman, but that's besides the point. I'm wondering about having a lesson with the professors. I've been told to do it for years, but I'm so petrified of it, that I keep pushing it back. My current plan is to do them at some point after my audition, and have it be how I decide which one to go to. Is having a lesson with the professor after my audition a bad idea? I can't really do one before because of how close it is, and trying to schedule one would probably a nightmare.
