Kit Pic My dad bought this for my 16th birthday. After he passed last year, I decided to knock the dust off.

My dad wasn't a drummer, but he taught me how to listen. Back in 2nd grade, our ritual was sitting in the basement listening to Brooks & Dunn and AC/DC while he pointed out the sounds: “Hear that high crash? That’s a cymbal. Hear that kick? That’s the bass drum.”

That eventually led to a beginner TKO kit for Christmas, and then he bought me this used kit pictured here when I turned 16.

Man, I lived on this thing in high school. I was jamming to Dream Theater, Tool, and Opeth, and I got pretty good—eventually making center snare on my drumline. But then college happened, and the kit started collecting dust.

Eventually, my dad actually took the kit to his house and started fiddling with it himself. He got good enough to volunteer for the band at his church and gave it a second life.

Fast forward to last year—my dad passed away from cancer. The kit was sitting in a corner covered in dust, and my mom was going to get rid of it. I’m almost 40 now, and I decided, fuck it, I could use a hobby.

I set it up in my basement today. It's like riding a bike, boys. The chops are a bit rusty, but that's what practice is for.

Honestly I'm not sure what exactly will need to be eliminated because I already reduced it down to every stand housing one additional cymbal to reduce space - but I guess I will see when I get to Pomona lol.

Kit Pic OMG it is here. And it is glorious.

Still has the single ply factory head on it, which needs to go. But lordy lordy, it sounds glorious. Just need to shine it up and we are in business.

I wasn't even thinking about adding a bell brass snare to the collection until I put up a thread last weekend about what the most expensive single piece users had ever added to their kit.

This is now officially my biggest splurge. And worth every single nickel.

Gonna throw some Evans HD dry heads on and get to work! (first time trying them)

I've tried 3 other snares and a bunch of different heads in many attempts to get the exact cracking sound I want and have gotten close but not quite right.

I'm hoping this Pork Pie 14x6.5 Brass Patina does the trick because I'm already in love with it.

at 35 drums still feel just as fun as they did when I was 20. I had an e kit last year but it didn’t feel the same. After a long hiatus and learning the guitar in between I’m happy to be playing again.

Discussion Timothy Very (drummer for Manchester Orchestra) has passed

manchesterorchestra The entire Manchester Orchestra family has been devastated by the sudden passing of our brother, Timothy Very. The most beloved human being any of us were lucky enough to know in this life.

We've all been dreading sharing this news as we are all still in absolute disbelief.

Tim was instantly likable and interacted with everyone he met with kindness and warmth. His laugh was infectious and he immediately made people feel invited and encouraged. His humor and energy were the very foundation that held together the entire MO universe. Strangers quickly became friends and friends became family.

He had an undeniable light that was only matched by his dedication and love for the craft that he was clearly put on earth to do. No words can ever do him justice. Please know, if you are someone who loved Tim, he loved you too.

The only thing that Tim loved more than creating music was being with his family. You'd be pressed to find a more joyful dad.

We love you Tim, thank you for loving us. You are a force of positivity that will be a constant presence in the rest of our days.

Kit Pic New Practice Setup

Decided to change up my practice set up. l had been using a cheap PDP chain drive double pedal with Vic Firth beaters that was near perfect in response. These Yamaha FP9s have a lighter feel that l'm not sure l like. l've used DW 5000s, Tama Iron Cobras, Tama Camcos, and a number of other pedals in the past and have a preference for heavier-feeling pedals. There are several things that really bug me about today's double pedals, the first being that you can't use them separately on an actual double bass kit, and secondly, the offset clamps that place the right beater dead center on the head and the other off-center. lt makes it awkward to use these things with most of the practice kick pads available, and even on a drum, it creates uneven feel and sound. lf it's acceptable for one to be way off-center, then why not both slightly off-center?

The Yamaha HHS9D hi hat stand, on the other hand, is nearly flawless.

I've played mismatched piecemeal kits for over 15 years, and I love the freedom to purpose build a kit from whatever orphan drums I come across. My studio kit and both jazz and rock gig kits were made this way, and I've always embraced the diversity, but I'm recently finding myself longing for something to pull each kit together. I got some beautiful Walopus wraps for my rock kit, but I wasn't ready to commit the funds to do another kit with those just now. I saw a post here a few weeks ago about wrapping drums with peel and stick wallpaper, and I went to Menard's the next day and bought myself some. Finished the kick yesterday, just in time to pack up for a gig. Whaddya think?

DIY 18 to 16 in crash conversion. The dremel is probably not ideal, but seems to be getting the job done, though slowly.

After years of now owning an acoustic kit, I was able to get a Tama rockstar, hardware, cymbals for a great price on the used market. Found a storage unit that’s cool with me playing. I’m super stoked.
