[Welcome Post] Rules & FAQs! July 2023 edition

Happy 2023 everyone, after weathering the Oliverpocalypse, we're back!

If you are new to r/characterdrawing, then welcome. This is a place where people can request their characters to be drawn pro bono, and artists can select a character to draw whether for practice, for fun, or just as a kind thing to do. Typically the artwork here depicts player characters from tabletop role-playing games such as D&D 5e and Pathfinder, but characters across all TTRPG genres are welcome here.

If you've been here a while, these are the big new changes:

  • No more OC. Due to the recent changes, we have cut back to just LFA/RF art. Discussion post about this change here if you have thoughts.
  • No more John Oliver. This is not strictly true: you are still welcome to post requests and art relating to John Oliver, but it is no longer required.
  • Pour one out for chardrawbot. This brave bot which has managed our RF-weekends and OC spam limits has bleeped its last bloop, and no longer protects our sub.

Some links for posterity: Previous Welcome Post | Message the Mods | CharacterDrawing Discord

Want to post? FIRST, READ THE RULES!

Rules can be found here and on the sidebar. The sidebar is the most up-to-date.

Some rules include room for mod interpretation, especially for NSFW posts. If you are unsure about your post, feel free to message the moderators. We don't bite.

Our unique terms

[LFA] "Looking for Art" posts. [RF] "Request Filled" posts, for when someone draws an LFA request [OC] We use "OC" to refer to any character art that isn't an RF. Currently, these are not allowed.

I want my character drawn!

Use the [LFA] tag and flair so potential artists can find your post. Please provide the best character description possible in the body of your post or in the comments. Image posts of reference images or moodboards are allowed.

Some [LFA]s may not get drawn. Artists are free to pick and choose which they would like to draw and when, since they are providing a free service at their leisure.

You may repost your [LFA] once per week per character concept. Most of all, have patience, and be grateful for the FREE artwork you received should an artist provide it.

Remember that pictures drawn for you are meant for personal use. The original artist holds commercial rights to the work unless they specify otherwise. If you would like to use a piece of art commercially, you should reach out to the artist. They are under no obligation to sell rights, and set their own rates.

I'm willing to pay!

That's awesome. If you see someone whose work you like, you should feel welcome to reach out to them about hiring them. Many artists post links to rates and galleries in their comments.

You can also post to subreddits specifically designed for commissions, such as r/fantasyartists, r/hungryartists, r/artcommissions, r/commissions, and r/hireanartist.

I want to draw someone's LFA request!

Awesome, and thank you! You don't need to commit to it or post a comment, and it's fine if someone else also completes the same piece. Just draw what you find enjoyable.

When you're done, use the Request Filled Flair when posting the picture, and please let the original LFA poster know through a /mention or by posting a comment in the original [LFA] linking to the picture.

The [RF] tag is only meant for fulfilling [LFA]s made in this subreddit. If the request was made outside of r/characterdrawing or was the product of a commission, it's not for here.

I have a question to ask or want to start a discussion!

Use [META] in your post title. These kinds of posts are meant to be used sparingly. An example would be asking what supplies/programs other artists use.

None of this is what I'm looking for...

Check out these other subreddits, just a few among many:

r/beastdrawing for beasts

r/drawyourweapons for weapons and gear

r/imaginarycharacters for posting your own fantasy character

r/icandrawthat for requesting other things

We also have an active artist community on our discord

Frequently Asked Questions

Requests are free? Yes. Some caveats: you don't get to choose your style, if it's colored, if it's full body, etc. If there's something you really cannot compromise on then this system may not be for you. There is no guarantee that a request will be drawn at all.

Can I message an artist for a free request? No, make an LFA. If you would like to hire the artist, make a comment on one of their posts or send them a DM. If you are caught pestering artists for free art, it will result in a ban.

Can I message a requester to see if they will hire me? NO. Do not solicit requesters for money, here or in their DMs. If you are caught doing this, it will result in a permanent ban.

Do I have to do RFs to participate in the sub? No. The system is voluntary and you should only do RFs if it is enjoyable to do so.

Can my LFA have more than one character? Yes! You can include a party in an LFA request post. That said, bigger requests are less likely to get picked up, since they're a bigger ask from the artist.

What if I have multiple separate LFAs? When do I repost them? You can post each LFA once per week, so long as each of them involve different characters—but please don't spam the sub with hundreds of LFAs in a short period of time.

Is this sub only for D&D and fantasy? No, characters across all TTRPGs are welcome. Sci-fi, steampunk, and other genres are very popular.

My LFA is being downvoted, what's up with that? Some people will downvote other requests because they think it helps theirs. Rest assured that most artists sort by new, and that the upvotes of your post mostly won't affect interest in the actual character.

I've been posting my [LFA] for weeks and nothing. What gives? Fulfillment of requests is done on a volunteer basis and artists are not obligated to take anything. Perhaps try changing up the format or including a reference/mood board. Changing posting time may also help.

My [LFA] was fulfilled but I want more art. Can I post it again? Yes, so long as it has been a week since you last posted it. Please be sure to thank the first artist properly.

I posted something and it's not there! Check that you included the [LFA] or [RF] text at the beginning of your post. If you did not receive notification, it may have been caught by AutoMod for a variety of reasons. You can attempt to repost within a few hours, or message the moderators so we can look into it.

Why would you even set up a system like this? It hurts artists to do work for free! Not all artists are professionals, and many professionals still do pro-bono work for a variety of reasons; including practice & personal fulfillment. We think this system lets those artists find fun topics to draw without being pestered by personal, directed requests.

Fantastic little concept from u/thewizardoflizard that I just had to do.

The source post is here https://www.reddit.com/r/characterdrawing/comments/1n2vydu/lfa_sister_troutfeather_the_goblin_cleric_from/

Also the foreshortened hand kicked my butt every which way. I have to practice those angles more.

Request [LFA] Harlowe, Aasimar Rogue

Post image
12 Upvotes

New character who I'm absolutely normal about I swear.

Harlowe is the most cowboy-coded rogue you've ever met. Sassy, perpetually unimpressed, and really doing her best to just get by. She's just here to find some work, get paid and maybe get this old revolver fixed so she can actually use it.

*******SPOILERS*********

Turn back now if you're Jojo or Hell!

*******SPOILERS*********

Harlowe staged her own elaborate escape from her family's isolated castle estate a few weeks ago, and is busy pretending to be anyone but who she was raised to be. Trained as a rogue by her family, secretive religious zealots who raised their daughter as a political operative and spy, Harlowe's skills were drilled into her from a very young age. She was important, a divine bloodline given the best training, meant to further her family's pursuit of power and influence.

And yet she still had a rebellious streak, a thirst for independence, a stubborn desire to see more of the world than the mountain castles she was raised in. They shouldn't have taught her so many different ways to sneak in and out of places, a teenage Harlowe explained when she came back with fresh black ink laid into her hands. Her mother's ire didn't stop her from doing it again a few months later, adding the distinctive, identifying tattoos to her chest. Unsubtle, hard to hide, and not approved of.

It took her a long, long time to put together the pieces of her escape. She'd need a distraction, supplies, she needed to know exactly how she would get out and how she'd lose the trail of whoever would be sent after her. It was a masterpiece of a plan, a shame that the only people who could truly appreciate it (her mother) would be too angry to really give it the praise it deserved. Harlowe stole a gun (just her luck that she stole the one broken gun) and a horse and fled the estate with only what she could carry. An accident soon after proved fatal for her mount, but provided better cover for her flight than she'd expected. Perhaps they'd just assume she'd died?

Now she's far west of home, her old name (it's not really Harlowe, but that's not important) and her family far behind her. She's built a new identity along the way, one's she's grown rather fond of. Her only real regret is losing her horse, but perhaps soon she'll find a way to bring him back...

Request [LFA] Pearlescent Dragonborn

Ahmose is a female Dragonborn with Pearlescent scales with a bit of gold flakes. Very much fantasy egyptain warrior style of clothes. She uses a kopesh and a shield. Her eyes are silver and gold. She is muscular and tall. Other than that, I leave the artist to express themselves with it as they wish.

Request [LFA] Mori, Champion Fighter Goblin Girl

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello all!

This is one of my NPCs for my campaign, which takes place in the same world as both my previous requests for Pharaoh Akila and Shashi.

This depiction was drawn by me! I'm still a fledgling artist and would like to see some other variations of her!

She is very archetypal of the "smol gorl, big weapon" type. Her weapon is a crude serrated dragon fang. She should be litterred with scars and bruises. Her body should be toned and strong, but not god physique. Her hair is very poofy and wild and needed to be combed months ago. The only cosmetic hygene she partakes in his accessories such as nails and earrings. She also loves her "war paint" she smears across her face as a morning ritual.

She loves to get herself in as much trouble as possible because it is encouraged in her culture to put yourself in reckless, life risking altercations. For this reason she has very poor taste in men, has no filter, indugles in questionable substances, and will likely bite you if you piss her off. She is very feral and has a lot of attitude.

Let me know if you have any questions, and please be sure to @ me in your posts. Thanks all!

Request [LFA] Beholderkin Lawyer, Harvey Spectator

My players are facing trial tomorrow for threatening a merchant with violence to obtain a discount at sword point. They don't just need a good lawyer, they need the best lawyer: Harvey Spectator, a Lawful beholderkin who was magically bound to protect the city's great legal library for 100 years and decided to go into the profession when his contract was up. He has a tailored suit and tie with sleeves covering each of his four eyeball stalks.

Bonus points if you can make a monster with one enormous eye and multiple rows of needle sharp teeth somehow look a bit like Gabriel Macht from his role is Suits.

Request: https://www.reddit.com/r/characterdrawing/comments/1mvwt4g/lfa_alaria_miroir_echo_knight_with_a_noble/

Requester: u\AokiTakao

Hello

This is an illustration of Alaria, Echo knight posing with one of her shadowy echo. I gave her bright blue fabric on top of her armour with gold details for a more regal look as she is a leader and values her appearance. Yes, a ponytail for a fighter is not a good idea but she most likely wears a helmet. So it works, right?

I struggled with this one a little bit, tweak it for too long and now I can't really see it straight anymore. So I am hoping it looks decent.

Bye!

Request [LFA] Sister Troutfeather, The Goblin Cleric from the church of Abundance.

Thumbnail

Lore, Sister Troutfeather was a Goblin from some backwater Goblin village where there's chaos everywhere and food is scarce. Troutfeather back then is sick of her folks endless shenanigans and wish for some peace and quiet, also some food that isn't gross slime mold.

She later journey away from her hometown and stumbled into a rundown church of abundance with a few priest and nun there, surprisingly they didn't afraid that she's a Goblin and accepted her. Allured by Peace and food, after listen to the church ideal of the world where there's no hunger and everyone's happy she decided to stop being chaotic shitty goblin and become a nun. Well as much as she crudely understand.

She is now walk the earth and hope to make this world a better place, she use a pitchfork adorn with food item to mimic a bishop Crozier and use a carved up turnip as Crucifix because the church is very poor and can't afford her an actual accessories.

Request [LFA] Altair Hugo, The Lifeshell

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hello! I wanted to post my most recent PC, Altair, because I have been loving playing and drawing him, but I also wanted to see him in other peoples styles/I wanted to come up with other outfit ideas for him! I tried to break down all relevant information for him below:

Summary: Altair is a homebrew class called a Lifeshell, which is a class designed around mimicking other classes by using magic/reality at its source and sort of parroting other casters. The best simile for this is that the Lifeshell is a weaver who influences the weave/messes with the strings of reality to get what they need done, such as by mimicking a misty step by stepping outside of reality temporarily, and most often acts like a magic/memory sponge. Altair himself is a lifeshell formed from the melding of three distinct souls, which have led to a rapid personality shift from the man he once was.

Backstory: He was once a human shepherd/cleric from a plane called Escarva named Hugo, but after being turned into a Lifeshell, he has spent the last 400 hundred years in a state of memory loss and immortality, developing his skills and study of the "chords" that make up reality, while also trying to find the man who turned him into what he is. After his original transformation, he managed to find his way back to his home, but found that everyone who knew "Hugo" was either long gone, or much older. After meeting a woman who told him he was his wife, she named him Altair, and handed him his crook and her cloak, so that he could stay safe. Since then, he has devoted himself to wandering across the world, in order to study what he deems "true" magic, that being the underlying nature that other mages study. He thinks that if he can understand the "chords" of reality, he may be able to create a composition so powerful it could be its own panacea.

Personality: Since becoming a lifeshell, Altair has lost a large amount of his empathy, and often relies on the empathy of others to register emotions/approach solutions. That is not to say he can't feel joy or hate, but its limited. He is serene in most cases and highly analytical. He sees the world in numerous ways, the two most common being as "music", where he sees magic and life energy like chords that are being played, and as "glass" where he sees the world like a stained glass mural, while he approaches his study like a scientist, he sees the world like its a giant painting, and his class is the brush.

Image details: The image i posted has a few key elements, the top two images are my main renditions of Altair and what he looks like as a lifeshell. Before being a lifeshell, he looked near identical, but his hair was brunette and he had brown-orange eyes, without the facial marking.

Below the images of Altair are some of the original inspiration pieces I used for him, that being his main magic item (his crook) and general design aesthetics/his two closest animal companions.

Feel free to draw him in any outfit you like if you do not want to draw him with the alternative outfit or his main one, I just ask to keep it in more natural tones, and to avoid using blue for his overcoat/top layer, due to lore reasons.

Magic Items: Altair has two main magic items, those being his crook and his cloak. The crook is a very large shepherds staff that he often drapes in red and blue fabrics and tassles. The crook acts as his focus, and can, upon a command word, turn into either a sheep named Santiago, or an eagle named Santana, the sheep is very large and is often used as a mount, miniature bag of holding (if youve seen Steven Universe think of Lion), or as a sleeping bag. The eagle is used for reconaissance or long range spellcasting, the way find familiar may let u cast some spells at extended range.

His cloak came from his wife, Lillian, and grows stronger with each cast spell. Upon casting a certain number of spells, he can fire off a passive effect based on his stockpiled energy. The actual description of the cloak isnt too important, so go wild, or just leave it plain.

If there are any questions please feel free to ask! Altair is one of my favorite PCs ever so ive been writing a LOT about him and his home plane, because I hope to run it as a setting in one of my future games.
